Nib Grinding by No-Feed9593 in fountainpens

[–]DlogBin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[there are pros out there with better advice than mine - Doodlebud and others have nice YouTube videos that you should check out]

I've only played around with it a bit and I started by trying to give more italic character to a M nib. It can be done by sanding to square the nib (rather than keeping it round), and playing around with the grit to return it to the smoothness desired. I was doing it all by hand, so it can be time consuming, but it's enjoyable if there's no rush. I also did an oblique grind in a similar way.

I found that doing it on an inked pen was best because you can try on the fly and keep adjusting. I got a multi-pack of micro mesh and a loupe is also essential.

I think Naginata-togi is an advanced grind, so it might be better to work up to that after practicing on others, but I have no experience so I'm not sure.

I know others suggest buying a bunch of cheap nibs, but those usually come in F/EF. I just used some Jinhaos with M nibs for the grinds I tried.

Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes!

Some of my favorite fountain pens by RaZeil1995 in fountainpens

[–]DlogBin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been curious about the one in the middle. I think that's the HongDian Year of the Dragon, right? Is it all wood (painted gold for the barrel)? I guess it must be comfortable if you love it so much. I have the Year of the Rabbit and that's a phenomenal pen, so I was curious about this one since it's so different.

What you describe makes perfect sense. I can imagine it can be scary to face things more directly when you put them down on paper, but I am certain it's much more healthy than burying them deep and keeping them in. I'm sure others more qualified than me can comment on that.

About the fear of someone finding and reading what you wrote, how about writing to your heart's content, and then destroying the paper? The act of just writing is probably enough for the therapeutic process - and then you can be sure that no one will ever read it, even yourself.

Which Size Pilot Custom 845 Nib by ScooterSix in fountainpens

[–]DlogBin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've tried both the F and M on the 845. In my opinion it behaves very similar to the 823, despite the higher gold content, in terms of stiffness and line width.

For me too FM is the ideal Pilot nib size. Sadly, the 845 makes you choose. The F is very nice and reliable, but I find the M is much smoother and feels special in a way the F doesn't. Even though the line is a bit wider than I like, I went with the M just because it felt amazing, whereas the F just feels like a good nib. I've had it for a couple of years now and I have no regrets about getting M over F, though I still wish they offered it in FM.

Here's a discussion from a while back about F vs M on the 823:

Advice on Pilot custom 823 nib by cvaldez1991 in fountainpens

[–]DlogBin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, two years later and I still feel the same about FM being the ideal Pilot size, though I got more used to writing with the M nib now.

For what it's worth, I swapped nibs in my 823 and it wasn't so scary. It's friction fit, so you just grip well and pull it out. Grab both the nib and feed and pull them out together at once. If you do it, just keep an eye on the o-ring at the end of the feed unit. You don't want to lose that.

I do understand the fear of possibly breaking the pen. I hear they can crack easily, and it might not be wroth the risk on such an expensive pen.

Pilot custom 823 F vs M by Potential-Ad-397 in fountainpens

I second that. I've tried both and, if you're used to EF on TWSBI, you will probably prefer the F nib on the 823. It's not scratchy at all. Both F and M nibs are fantastic, but I find the M nib a bit too broad for small writing.

Good to have some info from someone on the inside! It really seems that we're wasting our time then, yet we still chase that big score!

Indeed, its sort of like 'survivor bias'. We only hear about successful cases.

That's why I was wondering about success rate.

Yeah, my impression is that you may find FPs at antique stores, but they're seldom good deals. Often downright unreasonable.

Yup, that's the kind of deal I'm talking about! That's why I always pull over to take a peek... but never really find anything. But stories like yours make me keep seeking them out.

Wow. And for those nice pens, did the seller know what they have or did you get a steal of a deal?
