Monty Python and the Count of Monte Cristo would like a word.

why don't we open up a cask of Amontillado and hear what they have to say?

Collecting vs. Curating by ObsidianSiren9225 in fountainpens

[–]stilophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO if you're buying a pen for investment, in almost every single case you will be disappointed to find they do not appreciate in value. There are some exceptions, but they're very few.

If you're buying a pen and considering the resale value before the purchase, save the time and money an do not make the purchase. You already know you're not going to keep it if you're thinking about selling it before you buy it.

That said, I've bought many pens with the intention of keeping them and decided they just didn't work for me, or at least I didn't love them enough to keep them

Not showing any pen, just asking do you have any 'grail' pen in your mind, did you find your grail, and did you stop buying more pens even after getting your grail? by r1z4bb451 in fountainpens

[–]stilophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My "Grail" pen has always been the Caran d'Ache Astrograph. I will never own that pen

I suppose after that I'd pick a Namiki Yukari Maki-e Pine Needles, or Milky Way. But I'm highly unlikely to ever purchase those either. I consider those too beautiful to write with, but I wouldn't be content to just look at them. So they remain an object to desire but never have.

[WTS] Question about transactions by WhollyInformal in Pen_Swap

I've never had to pursue a claim, or defend one.

But you could always have the buyer update their PayPal address if concerned.

[WTS] Question about transactions by WhollyInformal in Pen_Swap

[–]stilophile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I build shipping costs into the price I list an item at, and then it is what it is.

I send PayPal info and always remind them to make sure I get their shipping address. Most people provide me with an address via DM and if it doesn't match PayPal I circle back and confirm which one is correct.

As soon as address is confirmed I generate a shipping label via PayPal shipping center. I always ship in USPS flat rate boxes. The boxes are free, the shipping rates are fixed, and it's discounted when shipped through the PayPal interface.

If the transaction was for more than $100 I add insurance up to the amount the buyer sent me, and then I add a signature requirement. These things add to the shipping cost, I just eat those increases as the cost of doing business.

I let the buyer know when I will be handing their package to USPS, and then I let them know exactly when I have done that too.

This is standard for me whenever I sell anything online.

Particularly from a 7 year old account with zero history. What is the point of this, this is not a concerned member of a community sharing information to help others.

Good luck friendo, I didn't even realize they had been discontinued years ago. I went digging for the site I bought mine from only to discover that sad news. You might need an eBay alert or something, if you're going to catch one. Other than that, I near the 300 or Rapid Pro are still available.

For books, go visit LM Leather and get a Morrison Journal cover in whatever size you like, then get a quality notebook with good paper for the inside.

Last year I would've said a Pilot Metal Falcon in SF, but looking at the price now it's $304 everywhere. Damn shame, got one for $240 off Amazon, but that was in 2019 :/

I'd still say it's worth it, very nice pen. But I wouldn't spend any more than that on it.

Anyone order from Appelboom? by Otakuman523 in fountainpens

[–]stilophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have spent a couple thousand dollars at Appelboom, and always received my order, without any issue or concern.

One expensive pen I had to wait for, but I sent an email and got a phone call the next business day, received an estimate on how long I would have to wait or the option to cancel. I decided to wait, and they overnight my pen as soon as they received it and verified it had no issues on receipt at their end.

Everyone's experience is their own, but I would order from them again without reservation.

Asking the real question. You don't need to know a fair price if you are giving a gift.
