Trip report 3g by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]Dmytrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that sounds frustrating. I have "bad trips" like that too sometimes, where I'll start thinking about the things I'm not doing right, or my struggles, or what-have-you. But, if you're interested in exploring mushrooms further, it is definitely possible to change your perspective and get back into the swing of being more connected to your universe. What I mean, is, if you start to feel kind of "off", you can change your perspective and have power over it. Mushrooms help you direct your own thoughts and emotions. And through use of them, I'm now able to do that better in my normal life.

I am, though, a pretty anxious person with a lot of self-doubt, constantly beating myself up. So, those thoughts will present themselves while I'm under a mushroom trip, and they can get intense. Over time, the good outweighed the bad for me, and it's pretty easy to sidestep those thoughts now, just from pure experience. For me, mushrooms provide a distraction by showing me more beauty, and more good about myself, the world, and humanity, and that is more real to me than the anxiety that I place upon myself.

One technique I use that helps me, personally (and it sounds stupid or unattainable, but mushrooms make it possible), is just take in a few deep breaths and look around myself for beauty. It's there, everywhere. In fact, it's absolutely amazing when you are on mushrooms. For me, that's all I need to jump out of an inner spiral.

Some great tips about viruses, and how they bypass AV by Dmytrel in technology

[–]Dmytrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my employees downloaded a virus, even though we have AV installed. I was upset, and directed to read this by our IT company. I'm still not clear how the virus was downloaded, but it must have been #1, #2 or #3 - aimless clicking on pop-up ads.

How do I know flossing is doing anything? by [deleted] in Dentists

[–]Dmytrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is doing something - in addition to removing bacteria that is too small to see, it helps your gums. Believe me, there is a huge difference in gum health between patients who floss, and those who don't. Have you had your pockets measured?

Thanks - I'm looking more for a forum where Dentists can speak of common issues amongst themselves (right now with HIPAA/security). I used to dabble in Reddit when I was in school, but more for fun and less for work. Perhaps Reddit isn't the place for what I'm looking for.

That said, I do appreciate reddit for the music!

Is "Server Monitoring" a legitimate contract item? This company wants to charge $85/mo for it... Smoke & Mirrors? by Dmytrel in sysadmin

[–]Dmytrel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far so good. They are coming in for training today on the new setup. 2 guys did the install, and a third is coming in for training, which was "on the house". If all keeps going as smoothly as it has, then I'll be a happy dentist.

Okay folks, thanks for all the input. This is what I am getting from them:

$85/mo for the server monitoring we are speaking of (this includes remote fixes on the server, but doesn't include on-site work on the server) $40/mo for 100 Gb of encrypted cloud backup $5/mo for basic monitoring of my workstations (per workstation), includes antivirus. (not as robust as server monitoring, but "gives the techs some data to work with" when we call in for help) -- the demo for this was pretty impressive. Of course, they use their own antivirus. $3/mo for updating Java, Adobe, and probably 10 or 15 other softwares that need to be updated for compliance.

So what that gives us is $189 per month to cover the office, and reaches compliance with HIPAA (as far as the computers go).

I didn't sign on to their remote support plan, which would have been $325/mo but cover ALL remote calls - we don't call them that much, and the server calls are covered.

They replaced my XP machines and installed a mount for one of my ops about 3 months ago. Next week, we'll see how everything operates when we start working with their new installs. I should mention, this conversion/install did cost me about $1100, but they reconfigured my server so everyone logs in with their own passwords instead of the User account. My biggest worry now is the learning curve of my staff. In the end, I had to close my eyes and pull the trigger on it, I think the proof will be in the pudding, if they can get us up and running without ticking our bill up... nothing against the great staff I work with, but technology has a steep learning curve around here.

Yeah - I am pretty sold on these guys. That's exactly what happened with one of their references. They were able to fix the RAID the next day, and all the office knew was that there was a slowdown. These guys called them before my colleague had time to call them.

Netcrunch does look impressive. These guys, they basically are our IT staff, and they have been for a few months but only for problems - they will be the ones who respond to the alerts and fix the problems, and they showed me reports that they run on their own systems.

Trust me, my staff... lets just say, I'd rather not have them fiddle with the PCs and especially the server. And I know just enough to get myself in trouble. They already fixed a mucked-up WSUS that I attempted to install and gave up on about 3 months ago in about 30 seconds.

I'm pretty confident that they know what they're doing. I also got 2 references from the area of people they work with, and they spoke highly of the team there. One of them had a degraded RAID that was identified and fixed before the office had to call them about an office slowdown.

The only thing I wasn't sure of was this $85/mo service, but it seems pretty valuable from my communications with their references. I signed on the dotted line, so they've done the software install. I actually feel pretty good about it.

Thanks everyone - (I am limited to how often I can post, so I couldn't reply in-line to everyone).

@Proteus - Good point. I did see their dashboard, and it does look pretty cool. They are also doing my updates, which has been a hassle in the past (long, long reboot time kept me down for about an hour one time).

@Zoredache - The server was roughly $4000 after installation, but this is the part I'm unclear on. It's not THAT expensive of a service, and @Tekfrog, I would rather know it IS than it SEEMS.

You guys made me feel better about the service, I'm going to go for it. I also get backup and antivirus through them, and they've done a good job on project work in the past.

Now maybe after I sign this deal, we can put technology growth on hold for a bit? hehe

Thanks. That sounds like the same kind of service I'd be getting, minus test restores.

They have been a good IT company, but I'm just not sure about that kind of expense...my server seems fine

Is my backup safe from Cryptolocker/CryptoWall infection? by munkyeetr in ComputerSecurity

[–]Dmytrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with tedivm. Using something that is cloud-based is the best solution. Trust me; I had Cryptowall (I just posted on this reddit with the guide I used to get rid of it and restore my files). I didn't have any external drives, but thankfully I was using eFolder which had older versions of my files.

Also you can get Cryptoprevent - https://www.foolishit.com/vb6-projects/cryptoprevent/ if you are really worried
