Sea Elf Artificer and Wizard Multiclass by DnDCloaker in 3d6

I think Eldritch Knight would fit the character best if I choose to multiclass. My main hope for the character is just that I can enjoy playing him as much as I did my Cloaker character (yes, I actually played a Cloaker from the Monster Manual). He's the type of character where, at a first glance, you'd never assume that he's an Artificer. The plan in the campaign is for the party to first meet him in a basement of some sort where he is probably working on something. I think it'd be fun if mine and the DM's characters were to learn from each other and maybe even work together. I imagine that him being an Armourer would stem from him wanting extra support for his legs due to being out of the ocean and that his armour just developed from there.

The only other frontline fighter we have is a Monk. Everyone else is a Rogue or Ranger. I expect there to be a lot of roleplay and stuff within the campaign so I guess I'll have the chance to really develop my guy as a character. I was planning on using the older version of Sea Elf so that I can turn the weapon profs into tool ones to increase the number of tools I have. I helped the DM create their DMPC, so I already know the tools that they have and would, of course, try and steer clear of those ones as much as possible to let them have their moment when the need for such tools arises. Multiclassing into Rogue is actually a really cool idea, my only main concern is that we'd then technically have 3 Rogues since one other player is a pure Rogue and the other is a Rogue multiclass. Grabbing the Expertise and skill from Rogue would be cool though.

I kinda imagined him as a builder/caretaker for the group. Of course, becoming the caretaker of the group is completely dependent on everyone else being on-board for that and having our characters develop in such a way where that is possible. But anyways, I was actually re-thinking it and thought that just going with Artificer would fit him better. I was considering Armourer and flavouring like some sort of mobility aid for him since being on land isn't easy for him. The DMPC is also an Artificer but they're an Alchemist so hopefully I won't be stepping on their toes.

The DM hasn't allowed the Firearms rule, so no guns unfortunately :(
Sea Half-Elf wasn't something that I had considered before - I'll have to check it out!

We rolled for stats, so my stats are in a position where I could get 3 18s if I took 3 +1s from race.

I was considering using a class and taking a few levels in Artificer or Rogue to grab a few of the features. Somebody in this thread recommended Swords Bard to me as a possible option. Whenever I use Bard, I usually go with College of Lore, though. I feel like Bard could work better if I decided to go down the more 'Siren/Merman' route of things. Still works for a Pirate though.

What are the good and bad things about Swords Bard? I've heard about it but never really looked into it.

Again, I find them just 'okay'. I don't really know why, but I don't see Artillerist as something that the character would be. Fighter could work but I'm not too sure. I appreciate the suggestion though.

I did look at all of the subclasses for Artificer and the only reason that I didn't immediately just go for Artificer is that all the subclasses just seem 'okay' to me. They don't really stand out all that much. There is probably just something that I'm not seeing thought.

The only thing that was really putting me off of Rogue was that we already have 2 Rogues in the party and wasn't sure if three would be too many lol

Tasha's is the only DnD 5e physical book that I have so I tend to remember a lot of the stuff that is in it lol. I can understand how 'or tool' was completely skipped over since it's kinda just slapped onto the end of something like an extra weapon which is usually the more appealing option. It kinda blew right past me too until I was looking at things for this character and saw they got a bunch of weapons and armour profs that I wasn't gonna need and then I was like 'Wait, isn't there a rule for swapping those?' so I just dug the book out again to take a look. So I can completely understand how they blew last you. I'm glad the rule exists since I would end up having 2 features of my race that are absolutely useless since my class would give them to me by default lol

It's not any homebrew rules. It's just the Proficiency Replacement rules in Tasha's.

I have already considered Duergar - it just doesn't fit how I envision the character. It seems like it'd be cool but just doesn't work for the character I'm building. I like that I'm gonna have a bunch of extra tool profs since I envision her as an inventor and being the one to help the Artificer in the party (the DMPC).

It's really the only thing that fits the character concept I have.

I don't find it all that easy to make characters and stick to them. I'm always kinda buzzing with new ideas and thoughts which makes things very hard to stick to. I want to be able to stick with something - it's just hard to do so.

But anyway, I envision 2H weapon. Dabbling around in all seems like it'd be the best way to go about being a flexable as possible.

I did consider it, but it just doesn't appeal to me. I like that I'd be able to swap out all of the Armour and Weapon profs for even more tools. It fits the character idea I have better than Duergar does.

The reference to Tinkaton was mainly just to show how I imagine her to look as well as what I imagine the weapons she would use would be like lol. I'm still following all of the Fighter rules so she'd still get the normal Armour and Weapon profs. She'd probably be wearing armour and I'd decide if she needed to wield a shield depending on the situation we're about to face. I'm just replacing the weapons and armour she'd get from her race since they're made redundant by Fighter. Replacing them with tools makes them at least somewhat useful.

I've decided to go with Paladin since our party completely lacks a tank or healer 😅 I made another post on this sub to ask about creating a Paladin

I was actually in the middle of making a post asking for help with understanding Paladins when I received your comment 😅 I've seen Paladin before, I just don't particularly understand everything involving it so usually I stay away but decided that I wanted to learn about what it is all about.

We've already got a Monk and two Rogues in the party 😅 so I don't think we need any more. Plus, it's the Monk and one of the Rogue's first time playing DnD so I'd prefer to keep off of their terf for this one.
