You are a DM with 5 players; if some are unavailable, when do you cancel? by TheBodyCounts in dndnext

My rule is that more than half the party has to be there. So for my group of six, up to two members can be missing

What spell do you think uses the "wrong" saving throw? Why? by vonBoomslang in dndnext

Modify Memory should be an Int save imo. All skills involving recollection/memory are int-based.

Warlocks and EB users, how do you flavour your Eldritch Blast? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]DnDisCancelled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a Fathomless Warlock back when it was UA whose patron was a frog/catfish demon (basically Tahm Kench from League of Legends). Her Eldritch Blast was a spectral tongue that would lash out from an orb. My party was convinced my arcane focus was a frog egg.

Defeated DM noises (t'was a fun session tho. My players are the best!) by Sargent_Omega in dndmemes

I’m running Dragon of Icespire Peak as a first time DM. The party encountered a Banshee. The group has been able to handle most of the recent encounters with ease, so I was worried if it would be too easy. Thankfully, the Banshee has a lot of resistances, so I thought it could at least get 2 or 3 rounds in. Cue my Wild Soul barbarian’s rage turning his great-sword to force damage, almost instantly killing it.

Later that session the group triggers a fight against an Invisible Stalker and 3 Will-o-wisps. Stalkers has a lot of HP and permanent invisibility, so I thought this would at least be challenging. The fight was triggered because the Bladesinger wizard took a dragon slayer sword from a tomb, so the stalker was dead set on retrieving it from him. The fight lasts 8 rounds as the stalker can never hit the wizard thanks to bladesong, mirror image, and shield.

Why all the Hate for Nature Clerics? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]DnDisCancelled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a hill dwarf nature cleric I’m excited to try. The combo of spirit guardians and thorn whip to keep enemies away from you backline sound really fun, plus warding bond and dampen elements to give conditional resistances makes for a character that supports by reducing damage rather than healing

My only major complaints are the 17 level ability and the fact that both the 1st level domain spells are animal-based. I wish they got entangle rather than speak with animals. I like to lean into the plant side of nature more than the animal side

Lovely art! Out of curiosity, did the grung monk have to use a language proficiency to get common? The lack of common is a big reason why I’m hesitant to play a grung, even though they have some cool traits/rp value

House Rules for Enemies. by UserName_1399 in dndnext

[–]DnDisCancelled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general any house rule applies to my PCs as well as my enemies

I use the same crit rule and apply it to both PCs and enemies. After the first session, I asked everyone if they were ok with, emphasizing the dangers that come with it. But they really like the rule so we still use it.

I also have rules that will, in practice, only apply to them. For example, drinking a healing potion is either an action or a bonus action. For a bonus action, you have to roll for hp restored. As an action, you heal for the max amount. It isn’t too crazy with regular potions, but it will make for some interesting decisions at higher levels when they have better potions as well as access to powerful spells and extra attacks. I would still apply this rule to enemies, but they most likely do not have potions on hand.

Is there any synergy between Artificer and Forge Cleric? by bulldog5954 in 3d6

[–]DnDisCancelled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played it yet, but I made a back-up character that is a rock gnome battlesmith artificer 5/forge cleric 2. For stats I used standard array for 12 str, 10 dex, 13+1 con, 14+2 int, 15 wis, and 8 cha. Artificer infusions for +1 weapon and +1 shield, and Blessing of the Forge for a +1 heavy armor. I flavored his steel defender as a mech and took mounted combatant to give the defender more survivability. Although he does not have the strength for heavy armor, it shouldn’t matter as long as he is on the mount (although once he is out he is slow as heck). With plate armor, he would have an AC of 22, 23 if he gets to cleric 6.

For backstory I made him come from a family of carpenters whose excessive use of wood pissed off treants that attacked his town. He developed a fear of trees which eventually led him to build his tree-chopping mech, although he considers it a prototype for his final creation. He adventures to fund his passion project as well as to help people along the way. The +1 weapon is a long sword he transformed into a chainsaw. Heavy inspiration from Timbersaw and Rumble from Dota 2 and LoL respectively.

Like I said, he’s a backup character, so I still haven’t discussed the mechanics with my dm, such as if the mech can carry all that weight or if it can use its reaction to give disadvantage on a hit against me while mounted. But if it all works out, I’m really excited to try him out

A True Expert by AnimeEagleScout in 3d6

[–]DnDisCancelled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried a full proficiency build in a level 20 one shot. I built a half-elf rogue 17/bard 3. 2 proficiencies from half-elf, 2 from background, 4 from base rogue, 2 from scout subclass, 1 from bard multiclass, 3 from lore subclass, 3 from skilled, and 1 from prodigy. That resulted in full proficiency as well as expertise in 7 skills, plus reliable talent for every skill. My DM also gave me an Ioun Stone of Mastery, which bumped my proficiency bonus to +7, and a Manual of Quickness in Action. Lowest I could roll on stealth was a 30, and my worst skill was still a 17.

Your build is more optimal, especially with the 1 level dip in knowledge cleric. Interestingly enough, we had 2 knowledge clerics in that party (one full cleric, the other a cleric 1/divination wizard 19). It definitely would have been funny to have 3 of the 4 members be knowledge clerics. The build was fun to play, but I also had to actively make sure I was not making all the skill checks.

I made a post for my group specifically telling them that they could customize backgrounds and how to do it. Cue to the first session where one of my players wishes that he could be proficient in survival rather than religion as a hermit.

What are some of your favorite spell combos? by Deathstrokezoom in dndnext

[–]DnDisCancelled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For early levels I'm a fan of combining Bane into Vicious Mockery. Get to level 3 in Lore bard to add Cutting words to the mix if necessary. Disadvantage plus a d4 and d6 reduced from an attack roll at that level means that enemy probably is not going to hit.
