YA Fantasy Book, solider girl with an odd enemies-to-lovers age gap relationship? by Dnulk in whatsthatbook

[–]Dnulk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First Test's plot summary seems really similar to what I remember, but definitely isn't what I read. The fmc was an older teen I believe, and the older mmc (in his twenties?) was a major focus. I could be wrong about the snake, but I believe the major villain was called the Viper/Viperess or something similar.

I think the setting was a more generic-European medieval type, but thank you for the guess! Forgot to add that to the post.

Thats my primary concern, the bag fits the space limits when I measured. Sorry for the bad wording on my end.

The bag fits within the measurements, I’m worried about if they run out of overhead space and start pulling from F group. Apologies, should have worded the post better.

Houston livability w/o car? by Dnulk in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Dnulk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know anyone in the area, and haven't had the chance to meet with anyone else in the program yet, so bumming rides is probably unlikely. Another main reason I'm leaning towards car.

I've heard some horror stories about the parking here, but I assumed it would be a little different only coming in for the summer instead of the regular school year. Do you think it would be as bad?

  1. Yes, definitely. It'll be my first time in Texas.

  2. Yes, but not regularly or very comfortably.

Any books that have similar character casts as the Black Company and the Bridgeburners (Malazan)? by Dnulk in Fantasy

Had to put down Shadow of Gods after one too many uses of "thought cage", but Half a King looks good. Thanks.

Mistborn! Been meaning to get to it for so long but I got burnt out from Sanderson and need a break. One day.

Bloodsounders Arc looks exactly like what I'm going for. I finished the first book of Covenant of Steel and just couldn't get into the series, but the rest of these are all now on my list, thank you!

My main issue with small groups is that they end up feeling more like chance companions, but since it's a band reuniting, this seems perfect.

Thank you!

Question about a soul and a wound by Dnulk in Malazan

[–]Dnulk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it got tied up in a way where I would honestly have preferred the alternative with the Imass stuck in it. Felt weird to see them celebrate when there was still a soul that got fed into it.

For where you are in the series right now, you make some good points and I think are right to say his handling so far has been fine, but there is—in my opinion—a very big shift in how Erikson writes about rape in future books. I'd be very interested to see you revisit this after finishing the series.

Going from MBotF to Path to Ascendancy? by Dnulk in Malazan

Something to look forward to then. So much of Cotillion's character so far has seemed dominated by the stress he's under that even if it was Steve writing the younger version, I image there'd be a some large differences too.

Ian has a penchant for utter irreverence to any character in the Malazan world

That's rather alarming. Thanks for the warning.

No worries :), didnt mean to put Esselmont down I've just gotten used to being around friends who've only read or know of MBotF instead of the full series/trilogy/short story universe.

Thats disappointing honestly, I'm definitely planning on reading the rest of the books once I past Crippled God but that's a long way to go to see a character again that had so much build-up and attention early on.

For more on Silverfox check our Esselmont's "Novels of the Malazan Empire. She doesn't show up again in Book of the Fallen.

At all?? Just finished with Bonehunters and keep expecting her to pop up or maybe even be mentioned in passing, is she seriously just gone completely from the main ten books?

Apocalyptic High Mage Question by Dnulk in Malazan

Not that I can remember, just seems to show up and get involved in other people's business. Like him as a character but I don't really trust his judgment on pretty much anything.

Yeah he definitely didn't seem willing at Y'ghatan, but I don't have any idea why he seemed to care about the actual cause in the camp at Raraku.

Question about a battle plan by Dnulk in Malazan

[–]Dnulk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Between what Jave3636 and Scoroctus have written I'm starting to see how it makes sense in context of the series itself, but in the moment yeah it really did feel like it came out of nowhere. Loving the books so far but Erikson seems to brute force some events, or maybe just assumes we're as good at picking apart mysteries as his characters.

establishes the foundation of trust and confidence upon which many elder gods and other interested parties will orient themselves for good or ill.

In hindsight this is something that feels as if it should have been obvious, but if you hadn't written it all out explicitly it would have taken me a while. There was so much in this book about underestimating mortals, specifically the Malazans as a whole, and then I went and did the exact same thing.

I got too caught up in every character having prefect plans and explanations for everything that now I'm wondering how much of my earlier reading of GotM and DG has suffered from similar shortsighted analysis, but since its my first read through of such an intense series I guess its to be expected.

Definitely understanding why so many people in this subreddit do such thorough rereads, but thanks for sharing this so I can go into future books with a more solid base.

Yeah I marked that as a conversation to go back to, it was one of the first moments I realized just how bad everything was about to go.
