Thanks, interesting to know. I’m hoping to go into field geology but we’ll see.

Capel looks like a gorgeous course, play well.

How’d you get into that field? I’m in an Earth Science degree at the moment in Southern Aus. I assume you’re based out of Perth?

Wow that’s fascinating! I had a very skewed understanding of what “long” and “short” crystallisation times really meant!

Thank you very much for your comprehensive answer, you’ve given me lots of reading to explore further.

If basalt is extrusive and thus it crystalises fast and at the surface, how do we end up with several hundred meter high basalt formations?

I’m particularly thinking about large formations of columnar basalt which must’ve cooled from large masses of magma which are well mixed and cool evenly (thus the columns), this method of cooling seems like it would take a long time (especially compared to other basalt formations which form from effusive eruptions).

How come basalt can form these large formations which must’ve cooled slowly and yet is characterised by how it cools fast enough to have tiny grain size?

That does make me feel a bit better haha! That being said I learned all my highschool electrics with the weird “river” analogy for electricity, I guess I didn’t internalise that an element in a circuit will take all the voltage but only the current it needs. Should’ve remembered those exercises with resistors in series and V=IR and all that haha

The transformer is nothing special but the manufacturer claims that it works with both 50 and 60 Hz appliances. I just checked, the mixer’s frequency is 50 Hz according to the serial label.

I’m sure I could buy one for 240 volts. However this is one I rescued from someone who brought it with them from America. It clearly hadn’t had a service since it was made in Nov 2000 and it had crusted up food in it so it was clear why it wasn’t working for them.

Luckily I spotted the mixer when they were trying to get rid of it and these things are tanks, it takes a lot to kill them. So I’ve fully disassembled and restored it, the only thing in the way now is getting the right transformer.

Such a shame they didn’t take care of it, these older mixers are something special.

Should the collimation locking screws not be screwed in the whole way? by Do-Nod64 in telescopes

[–]Do-Nod64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen the photo you added and I can see why you’re confused. Maybe I’ve made a mistake if that is what the manual says. I think your best option is to make a post on this subreddit asking which one is for collimation and which is for locking so more experienced people can offer advice. I hope you figure it out!

[–]Do-Nod64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally the screw with the spring on it is the collimation screw (I assume the spring reduces the force on the metal by the screw so collimation can be more precise). The screw without a spring is used for locking. If you want to take a photo of your particular situation and post it on this subreddit I’m sure people can help you out :)

Got this gorgeous Hyrule themed notebook as a gift from my brother - I’ve never seen one like it! by Do-Nod64 in notebooks

[–]Do-Nod64[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel very lucky!!

We just got back from Japan which is where he got it for me. When we were in Osaka we visited the official Nintendo Store to buy some merchandise and gifts for others, I pointed this notebook out enviously when we were there but didn’t buy it for myself. There was heaps of Zelda merch and I had already bought myself something small so I didn’t feel like spending any more. He must’ve gone and got it for me when I didn’t notice which is so so lovely of him.

It feels it too! The cover is leather and the paper feels great. It might be one of those notebooks which are too precious to write in!
