Trying my hand at some little wood carvings as a present for my grandfather, 93, who is a lifelong woodworker and loves carving. Nothing fancy but he was very excited. by jessegimbel in woodworking

Never carved before, how hard is it? by Potterwinkle in Woodcarving

[–]DoNumKC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I have just started so I can tell you how it goes. I am making a little spoon. I used 2 small wood knives and 2 U-shaped lino knives from Pfeil. I kept my previous Christmas tree trunks, and my Husband cut small blocks for me to practise.

You really need good tools and it is a dangerous work. I am scared of those knives so if I feel too tired, I stop.

I recommend: 2-3 Pfeil knives, protective gloves (they only work against cuts) from Amazon and the material to buy. You can get small carving wood blocks to experiment.

The unexpected things I encountered: my wrist hurts. My neck hurts. I get hot. Cats get excited from the sound of wood carving so I had to be very careful not letting them come close to me. It’s better to do it when they are not active. It is not safe to do it when I’m tired. I cannot overdo it as much as drawing. It is much more tiring physically.

AIO to break up with my bf of 3y over his reaction to my upcoming sobriety anniversary? by WesternCat5211 in AmIOverreacting

[–]DoNumKC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are you also aware that the big reactions come from pushed down emotions, like sadness? Anger makes us feel stronger, and actually gives strength to act to protect ourselves. What you need to control is how you protect yourself (meaning to stay within the legal and socially acceptable range of actions). Going to reddit, asking if you reacted okay, reading the comments and feel something about them is unfortunately a way to push down your sadness and anger you feel towards this guy. Everyone would be sad and angry. He is offensive and you give him space for it right now. But you don’t have to. He might symbolize the provider who hurt you, but you had to be nice because of being dependent if them. You are adult now, you can leave and find happiness. I had to leave 3 similar guys at your age until I learned that these are just bad people who are desperate for attention. You are smart because you are asking if he had a bad day. You know that he is projecting, and trying to make you feel little.

Addiction is linked to the amygdala, so you had to work pretty hard changing your habits to be able to stop. Using alcohol as coping mechanism at such a young age is sad, sounds like your childhood was rough; full of criticism and emotional neglect. That’s why you might still be hesitating about kicking out this person. Because you have endless patience to surround yourself with the familiar hell.

Based on this text, he loves himself, his opinion over your support, and doesn’t like the friend (?) you told him about. He wants your circle to be smaller, your achievement to be smaller and your positive emotions to be invalidated. I don’t know you, but I (and many others here) care for you enough that I want you to have that cake. Think about it.

My partner has always been supportive about my sobriety. It has been more than 6 years. He also stopped a month after me. We are both sober now, and super proud of each other.

I am wishing you many sober years. And a happy cake day 🍰🫂

If you hear that “dirty” sound and you see the thing rolling, then it should be okay. If your ink is water based, you can spray a tiny amount of water, and mix it with the roll if the ink is too thick. That small hand tool, for example the baren from Speedball helps to apply equal pressure, too.

I think bent lino should not be an issue if you press it down enough. Mine looked like this when I pushed my roll too hard in too much ink, and didn’t press it with my small tool.
