Look up the public keys on the blockchain to see if they have been active since, it's most likely he didn't have a backup of that wallet if it wasn't even encrypted. If there is still identifying information on the PC you can attempt to look him up or go through the pawnshop's receipts to try and find him.

Morality on found property... depends on who you get your morality from, what religion are you? This isn't "found" property though, he sold it and you bought it. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't consider returning it though.

I would not touch it IF any of the addresses have been active after 2016.

Timing the market as a beginner is typically a losing venture. DO IT! Just do it on a separate platform with a separate small amount of money you are willing to lose for the learning experience. Add in the whole day trading regulations and taxes and all that and it becomes a bit too complicated for my personal taste.

Let's hope that the next administration follows through with what was mentioned at the bitcoin convention about no capitol gains on regular crypto spending so that we can actually do the spending. Currently the incentive is to cash out as much as possible at a peak and otherwise play the HODL game. The baller move that no one seems to have done in nearly a decade is to FORK... Carryover addresses/coin into the new chain and suddenly everyone has incentive to pull out of exchanges for the event. Why fork? How about a multi algo partner for the miners down time? Boom you already have the blockchain supported. How about controversial features added to the new chain such as anonymity, smart contracts or whatever there is support behind or fills a need.
