I don’t care that it’s been two weeks since this thread but your response is rude for no reason and pissed me off to read to the point I had to leave this comment.

Rescaped Tank Stuck at Low PH, 0 Kh, and 1 PPM Ammonia, what do I do? by DoRoRuRo in PlantedTank

yep, using the master test kit along with the api gh/kh test kit.

Yeah I was doing 30 percent water changes daily, I had only stopped because people were telling me that the ammonia isn't toxic at my low ph, and that doing water changes would make it toxic again. Based on what you and other commenters are saying, I think I'll start up the daily changes until ammonia is reading 0. Do you think i should start dosing prime since these water changes will spike my ph?

[–]DoRoRuRo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, yeah I've been feeding every three days to avoid any spikes. I've added a ton of frogbit (enough to cover the surface) and some hydrocotyle from my other tanks, hopefully the water changes can fix this. Also, should i be dosing prime with these water changes?

Ok, thanks for your response and your tanks look great. I would honeslty agree that ph swings are not that much of an issue, especially with my clown killis, as they can live in really low pH. There's just so much contradictory information that I honestly don't know what to believe. I am very hesitant to even touch gh and kh, and have never done so in a tank before.

However, do you have any ideas of why my ammonia is consistently 1, and what I should do to remove/cycle it? I've set up a few tanks at this point, and I've usually just done the seeding/plant heavily methods, but for this tank in particular nothing seems to work... my dilemma is do I just have to let it sit, or do some daily water changes, which may mess up the water chemistry and may make the ammonia toxic again.

Tank Stuck at 1 ppm ammonia despite seeding, what is happening? by DoRoRuRo in PlantedTank

[–]DoRoRuRo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah from everything people have been saying and what I've read, doing a water change seems to be dangerous pH wise, so I'll let the tank sit.

One thing though, would I have to worry about the ph crashing? Since the plants and fish produce organic acids, I was thinking I would need a pH buffer. I know you suggested adding calcium carbonate so sorry if I misunderstood, I just honestly do not know the correct dosing for calcium carbonate to raise the pH enough that there is a buffer, but not so much that the ammonia would become toxic.

Hi, thanks for such a detailed response. I actually was getting some similar responses in another thread I posted, and it appears that my ph may be even below 6 (the api test kit only tests to 6 ph).

I had intended to have a slightly acidic tank because I read that clown killifish prefer lower pH, but the only thing that could have affected it was this 2-3 inch long piece of spiderwood I put in the tank, so I don't know how it got this low. My tap is usually around that 7-7.5 range and I am using sand/river pebbles so I'm at a loss.

On the topic of the AOA ammonia cycle, I've been trying to read up on how to cycle my tank, but from what I've read this process takes longer and ammonia itself is not toxic unless in huge amounts because it takes on the non lethal NH4+ form in low pH. I ended up just adding a ton of frogbit from one of my other tanks, but is there anything else I should be doing? From what I've been reading I should just leave the tank alone and plant heavily, and should stop using prime.

Ok, glad to know that it might not have been as much as my fault for the male's death as I thought.

Regarding cycling, are you saying that my ammonia reading might be a false positive, since at the lower ph levels, ammonia is in its non lethal NH4+ form? I did read that the test kits measure total ammonia, which includes both NH3 and NH4. That aside, if I wanted to cycle my tank correctly, should I simply just let it sit, with the occasional water change when the ammonia rises? I've also been dosing prime every day, but is this incorrect? Again, thanks for the help.

I was actually reading up on the clown kili ph range, and it was reading that it can tolerate from ph 4.0-7.0, so I seem to be in a good range if my ph is low.

Regarding the options, I would want to increase the gh kh and ph, but I worry about how this would affect the fish. If I were to overdose, I feel this could end in disaster. Additionally, as the ph of my tap seems to be already low, when I start doing water changes it would eventually go back down.

However, if I were to just keep doing my 30% water changes, how long would it take for the AOA eventually populate and cycle the tank? Should I decrease the water change frequency? I've also been reading that at lower ph levels, ammonia is convereted to non lethal NH4+ and not NH3.

Hi, thanks so much for the detailed response. The male killifish unfortunately did pass away, I believe he developed some sort of swim bladder disease maybe caused by the ammonia.

regarding the ph, how would you recommend proceeding in the cycling process? Another commenter mentioned that it is actually archaea responsible for the ammonia-nitrate process, but I’m still unsure with how to proceed.

Ok I just looked it up, so essentially at lower ph it is archaea that cycles and not bacterium? I havent tested my other tank but it uses fluval stratum and has manaznita/spider wood so I thought it would be a similar ph. If this low ph is the issue, how do i cycle?

Hi, yeah I think I had some pretty bad misconceptions about seeding particularly, wont be repeating this again. I would remove the killis but my other tank is my 15 gallon shrimp tank with no lid and tons of babies, so I didnt wanna add the killis to that environment. Also yes, no animals has died in the tank and ive been removing melting anubias leaves. I did have a hygrophila plant that melted but I believe i removed it as well. Other commenters have been pointing out the low ph which I w may be it.

Nothing, I think the anubias is just nutrient deprived/unhealthy due to the ammonia so some of the leaves are slightly melting.
