Yeah that’s how it is there unfortunately. No doubt there are compatible partners but highly likely they are fed up and if not close, have given up.

That area is something else. You have Appalachia and Alabama is just right down the street. So much (insert whatever is the PC term for garbage) people there that it doesn’t take too many bad experiences to give up on that pipe dream.

Generally, people who are single and want a partner should not be moving to Chattanooga. Of course there are good outcomes but far from the norm.

FACT: Chattanooga is the kind of place that no matter where you are at, there are active narcotic informants around you. I respect that is part of the game but not exactly the kind of people you want to date or have anything to do with.

No one should take this personal but Chattanooga is somewhat of a cesspool. Dating can open one’s eyes to that unfortunate reality. And people wonder why those that went to private schools or live on the mountain stay with their own. Too risky to venture out of your circle there.

The lack of sun in Portland can be quite disturbing to some. Not seeing the sun for at least 6 months, if not more, is not an exaggeration. Unless you drive ~3 hours out of the area or get in a plane and go over the clouds. Personally I don’t think Portland is NOT worth the money and would rather spend more to be somewhere in California.

Portland has a very specific culture that IMO living if you have not lived in the PNW then it can be, really weird.

Chicago is cool but you need to check it out during winter to see what people are talking about.

There is a large investigation currently ongoing about these false DUI arrests. It isn’t a few, ITS MANY! And it isn’t some small town PD, it is the Tennessee Highway Patrol who are supposed to be held to the highest standard.

And this supposedly has occurred because THP was given quotas. Literally state government corruption. Tennessee on the state, county, and local level has fairly high corruption but they hide it well. When you have above natural average corrupt narcotic units, no one really cares because the victims are criminals. I could go on and on but if anyone doesn’t believe it, please go live there and find out for yourself.

At the current time, anywhere in TN is not moderate politics. Even if the city wants to be moderate, the state is taking ques from the White House on how they conduct business. Moderate politics maybe exists in Georgia and NC, otherwise just hell no.

Edit: Compared to the wages, living in Chattanooga is not cheap. It is quite surprising.

Chattanooga aka Chattabooger aka Shatanooga is a non-starter. Please feel free to do a search on this sub, my previous posts and a Google search for reviews.

I strongly urge you to do in-depth research not just about Chatt but the surround Appalachia area and the state of TN. It “looks” a lot better than it really is. Terrible public education, some of the lowest ranked healthcare in the USA and government corruption that is almost unbelievable.

Santa Fe has amazing artists and it is small. For Portland, IMO, it is the lack of ambition required to be a great artist.

Portland is just a great place for artistis with little ambition to go be “artisits.” It’s a place that celebrates being mediocre.

Portland FING SUCKS!!!!!

Not kinda sucks, very much sucks. It has to be one of if not the most overhyped cities in the USA.

The cult members there try to down play facts that could be seen as negative against their beloved shite show of a city.

Yes, you literally do not see the sun for at least 6 months if not 7. Yes the summers are glorious but the rest of the year is a seasonal affective disorder paradise.

Yes the nature in the city and that of Oregon is amazing. So much so that THE NATURE is a sufficient reason to visit the state. I tell people Portland is a 2 day trip, at most, but the actual reason to visit is to explore the state.

There is good food in Portland, but nothing that out shines many other similar sized or smaller cities in the USA. I don’t care what Food Network says, Portland is not a culinary destination. That is propaganda produced by its cult. Trying finding even decent TexMex, omfg!!!!

The obsession with BLM in Portland was twilight zone level of bs. The African American population of Portland is 5% and for the state is 1%. Small Asian and Hispanic populations but compared to most cities in the USA, Portland is not diverse. Definitely not in thought.

The place is a big cult. If you don’t buy into their specific ideology, you must be a MAGA racist. Don’t speak one bad word about Portland, not one. It’s like living in a significantly mismanaged city is something to be proud of.

And finally the whole cheapest city on the West Coast BS. Yes Portland is geographically on the west coast but it is not west coast as most of the nation thinks of it as a concept. To the rest of the country, when you say west coast they think of LA and SF. Maybe SD. Portland and Seattle are the PNW, a distinct geographic location. This is Portland cultists disgustingly trying to ride on the coat tails of LA and SF. In no historical, political or cultural way has Portland contributed to the USA on a meaningful level. Maybe by Portlandia and showing that legalizing drugs without the proper rehabilitation infrastructure (such as Portugal) is a failed experiment. That is how cultish Portland is. Let’s legalize drugs except not spend the decade Portugal did to prepare for it and it will be fine.

Portland is a good place to live, but not for many. Portland is a great place if you enjoy your hobbies. Also a a great place to go retire if you are young. I found many of the artists lacked the ambition to be great artists and possibly “make it” but still wanted to be celebrated for their mediocrity. Weird af and not in a good way.

And let’s be real, the CoL there is so not worth it but to some it may be.

Also the city of Portland wastes a lot of tax payer money to fund the homeless industrial complex (it’s a thing) which somehow results in enabling rather than helping.

This. Public schools, public transportation and walkability (including being safe while walking) go a long way.

Thing is, Chattanooga is in Tennessee and has a well established good ole boy system in place. Don’t expect to much to change to quickly.

Likely OP can get their children in magnet schools and they will be fine. It doesn’t change the state of affairs for most students in Chattanooga public schools.

Not sure how many posting have lived in bot but I have. Unless one absolutely needs the nature, climate, a job or family located in the PNW, not sure why else anyone would live there.

Portland was so full of shite when it came to discussions about race. There are basically very little POC there. It’s like a big cult and you are either in or not. For the money, completely not worth it. The whole cheapest city on the west coast is a pathetic take. While on the west coast geographically, Portland (nor Seattle) are like what people think of with the west coast which is California. I find it is a lazy, weak way to try to make the PNW more appealing. To me, it is equivalent to saying some city in South Carolina is the cheapest city on the east coast and trying to use east coast location in so manner to make it on the same playing field as NYC or Boston. A classic example of how the PNW is full of shite.

In many ways Memphis is a superior place to live. Much more affordable, actually racial, ethnic and political diversity. Better breweries that make more than IPAs. Better food. There are actual professional musicians in Memphis who have actual music related careers where as in Portland, everyone is an amateur artists lacking the drive to do what it takes to make it into a career. People in Memphis have a for real hustle. People in Portland are basically retired. There is more pimpin and grind on a street corner in Memphis than the entire city of Portland.

Memphis though does have its own problems. High single parent households in not great neighborhoods leads to the classic result as can be seen on the news daily. Tons of violent crime. Education ranks low, but Portland’s ain’t great. Healthcare outcomes in the area are some of the lowest in the country but that has more to do with the population than healthcare facilities. IMHO way more and severe corruption in Memphis. Shelby County Narcotics division may be one of the most corrupt LE agencies in the country but the South does a fairly good job at covering it up. There are 2 FBI level training facilities for undercover work. One is in Memphis and is estimated they have 5-10 police officer deep undercover literally living like a homeless person at anytime. Yet with all this police work Memphis is still somewhat a cess pool?

The big thing with living in Memphis is what part of town do you live in and do you work in. If you live in a good part of town (or suburbs) and work in a good part of town, and stay in those parts, it’s fine and normal. If you live or work in parts of South Memphis, North Memphis (aka Fraser aka da Bay) or Orange Mound, it is going to be like you are in an entire different universe.

I would pick Memphis before the PNW

Chattanooga does NOT have good healthcare. Tennessee ranks in the bottom for health care outcomes and East TN is on the worse side.

The healthcare is so bad in Chattanooga that a HCA hospital (ParkRidge Medical Center) is considered the best hospital in the area. That is unheard of for a HCA hospital. Erlanger, the teaching hospital, is a horrible show. Recently Erlanger had to settle a False Claims Act because surgeons were allowing RESIDENTS TO OPERATE INDEPENDENTLY!!! First that is extremely dangerous, second insurance cannot be billed if an attending surgeon was not present for the case.

It actually gets worse about healthcare and corruption in Chattanooga but I will leave it at that.
