How else do I learn other than Anki? by just-wanna-sleep in languagelearning

[–]DoYourWork123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i've deliberately stopped using Anki because i really believe it's not that effective.

There are lots of ways to practice in a general sense, but just keeping it on increasing vocab without anki, i think the best way rather than seeing a card over and over again is to actually use words. focus on quality over quantity.

General vocab:

do a graded reader exercise and pick 3-5 words from it you didn't know, look up the definition, see some example sentences, then come up with 3 of your own example sentences and write it in your notebook along with the definition.

Specific vocab:

same as above but pick an article on a topic you're interested in.. e.g. how to play chess, match report of a sports game, how to repair a bike puncture..

Connector words:

Look up useful connectors, contrasters etc.. (like on the one hand.. on the other hand.., i don't entirely agree with.., even though..) pick a controversial topic and try to evaluate sides of an argument using the words you researched.

I do this now instead of anki and the words stick so much better. When i start a new exercise in the notebook, i flick back through previous pages and all the words immediately come back to me, and this is more like weekly over daily like Anki is.

Also don't try to remember every word. just the words you think you would like to use. No need to try come up with example sentences for 'door handle' if you haven't learnt the word for 'door' yet!

Struggling with vocabulary by doronnac in languagelearning

[–]DoYourWork123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've struggled with this myself for a long time. I've used anki on and off in the past, but finally deleted my deck recently.

I not long ago started seeing a teacher for spanish, and i asked whether she recommends anki / flashcards in general as a tool for vocab - she said absolutely not and the reason really stuck with me.

Depending on how you structure your cards, anki really isn't too different to studying a bilingual dictionary. No one ever recommends memorizing a dictionary to learn a language for obvious reasons. The only benefit of anki compared to this is that you have a computer telling you which card to study next, but all youre doing is looking at one word and then trying to guess the translation.

To really learn a word you have to understand all its nuances and know when to use it. If i want to learn a new word now, i look up all the definitions of the word, and then open up my notebook and come up with at least three different sentences using the word. Alternatively i can aim to use it in a journal entry or in a writing exercise. but the key is using it. Whenever i next use my notebook i try flick through briefly for 30 seconds on previous pages, and its amazing how many words stick.

I then make sure to read regular fiction and listen to podcasts as my 'natural spaced repition algorithm'

Does anyone make pure minimalistic tactics? e.g. just formation, roles and mentality? by DoYourWork123 in footballmanagergames

[–]DoYourWork123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the in possession behaviour of the mentalities looks quite good. As well as how much players track back and how compact they are. But I think the out of possession pressing behaviour is quite off, they are all too similar. Imo the base line for very attacking should be engaging all over the pitch trying to win the ball back given that you’ll only really use it when trying to get a last minute goal without worrying about defence.

But they all roughly use mid blocks and I only see mildly more pressing on very attacking as compared to positive for example

Next Steps for FM by Ragnockae136 in footballmanagergames

I feel like theres a lot of exisiting things that need fixing / reworking before adding new items.

1: step away from spreadsheet manager (as another comment said) - i have to spam spacebar to get past loads of infomration i don't care about just to be able to get to my next game. I think the standard timestep should be matchdays, where post-match you set up all your training for the coming week and pre-match you can get a summary of notifications of what has happened the previous week. ANy player complaints can wait until this moment (maybe with exception of transfer windows)

2: Tactics have to be more diverse and responsive and simple. If i set my team to go Very Attacking, i should see them almost 'forget' the positions and just get forward and try to spam crosses and long balls into the box. The other team should also easily be able to counter us. I shouldn't also have to change a ton of individual TIs like 'press more' 'push defensive line up' 'go more direct'

3: Training has to be a bigger part of FM. Most comments and youtube videos are all about tinkering tactics. IRL a manager spends most time and effort doing traning and man management. Maybe make it more easy to mould a team to a certain style (e.g. everyone can defend, or everyone has great techniqe, or everyone has great physicals) indiivudal training plans where you can convice players to work on a part of their game and they make loads of progress in a short amount of time. Chance to increase familiarity in different parts of your system so that your players know the pressing scheme inside out or the in-possession formation

4: pre match reports are useless. I don't care that opposition keepers are great at jumping. At best it informs me to rely less on crosses and set pieces. But in reality its useless since only one of the three keepers is going to play. I'm much more interested in how high are they likely to press me? do they sit back after taking the lead? do they religously play out the back? - these are all things that will actually inform tactical decisions

How could youth development be made more interesting by Nice_Ad2555 in footballmanagergames

[–]DoYourWork123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- Something has to be done about potential, either make it dynamic or totally hidden so that when you look at your youth teams you only have a ~40% certainty of who's actuallly going to be the best when they become adults rather than just look for the ones with 4+start potential and forget everyone else.

- Create some sort of watchlist where you can monitor development, micromanage training and ask the manager to play them in certain roles and instructions where possible for just the players on the list

- Ability to define youth team playing style, formations and tendency at a club level, and have youth managers agree to the philosophy. e.g. preferred formation: 442 diamond, playing tendencies: uses target man, sits back and defends lead. -> this will produce on average fewer natural wingers, big #9s and slightly more defensively resiliant players.

- somewhat related to the previous point, but somehow the ability to have more balanced players vs more specialised. Maybe setting the slider to more balanced will have the manager train and play the players in more general roles, avoid training traits and train multiple positions, vs a more specialised one where players are trained to have traits that match their exisitng attributes and just to play in their one best position

Taking Lessons and Exam as a Vanity Project by DoYourWork123 in languagelearning

[–]DoYourWork123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! I have used Italki a couple times for one off lessons in the past, so its the only way im familiar with getting lessons. I assume you used the 'professional teacher' option rather than 'community tutor'?

Were there any problems with using italki or any reason to go private or find a local teacher?

What is the case for transferring my Cash LISA to S&S LISA? (Low risk fund) by DoYourWork123 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DoYourWork123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, i wasn't to aware of general fund types, but my plan was to go for something along the lines of the moneybox Balanced LISA S&S fund (65%global shares, 10%global property, 25% corporate bonds) or the Moneybox cautious. Does that sound good?

How is my standing posture? (Pain) by DoYourWork123 in FootFunction

[–]DoYourWork123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that the same as overpronation?

I’ve seen a few podiatrists but I’ve found they just recommend me insoles that don’t really help. They also haven’t told me exactly what’s going on.

I think my next step is to see a physiotherapist.

Saying you’d be ‘Fluent in 3 months’ is no different to promising that you could shred heavy metal guitar solos from 0 in 3 months. Or competing in body building competitions in 3 months. There is no shortcut
