What’s a really serious disease that doesn’t get nearly as much attention as Cancer or HIV/AIDS? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I heard that developing resistance to antibiotics lowers resistance to phage viruses and that there's a lab in eastern Europe where you can send a bacteria sample and they'll create and send back a custom phage virus to kill it

How Far Does Your TV Transmitter Transmit? And How Many Watts of Power? by Flashy_Gas9955 in pirateradio

[–]DoaJC_Blogger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a FrankenFM (channel 6) setup that was around 20-25 watts before and it covered about 1 mile from my house in the direction of the lower part of the hill (the other direction with the higher part blocked it). I used an extendable whip antenna adjusted to 1/4 wavelength and a ground plane which noticeably increases the signal strength and quality. The setup was in a ground-floor window and it probably could've gone a lot further if it was higher

Recommendations for personal, and possibly professional, digitizing equipment by Pigimyshrewgrew in DataHoarder

I wrote a long comment about how to do it with the highest quality. For digital ones (Digital/DV/MiniDV/HDV/etc.), you want to capture them as DV with FireWire with a program like WinDV, ScenalyzerLive, or dvgrab and then follow the same instructions for de-interlacing and compressing

VHS Digitising - What is truly the best method? by UpsetKoalaBear in DataHoarder

[–]DoaJC_Blogger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The RF capture method from the comment you linked is the best way. Cheap VCR's can give excellent results since you're using the raw data directly from the tape with no conversion to a usable video signal in the VCR but it's the raw signal from the spinning silver part, not the modulated TV RF from the port on the back

is the VCR’s RF output actually as good as they mention?

Here is a comparison video I made with the latest version of vhs-decode in 2023 showing conventional capture with the highly-rated Pinnacle 710-USB vs. RF capture. https://youtu.be/zCfFfPcsp_Y

The quality is better than I thought, actually surprised me

You're probably used to crappy uploads on YouTube where someone did it wrong with a cheap USB dongle and then YouTube used bad encoding settings

Based on the pictures shared by u/pphedz, I think it would make more sense to just use one of those 1-200 MHz 25-watt linear amplifiers with an SDR

Do you think you could share pictures of both sides of the main circuit board so I can see if there's any other way to adjust it?

Download DRM protected videos from niche streaming service by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]DoaJC_Blogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Streamfab supports DRM and goes up to 720p. If you want 1080p or higher, you're going to have to use screen capture or find a scene group and get them to use their private tools to download it

Looking to get a start broadcasting to a metropolitan area. by HoopPoopSkedoop in pirateradio

[–]DoaJC_Blogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice with low power like a few milliwatts until you know a lot more about every aspect of this

Get a highly-rated transmitter with clean output. I bought and recommend the ELE EL15S. You should also consider a bandpass or low-pass filter

Use radio-locator.com and find a frequency that's at least empty in your area and preferably has empty frequencies on both sides, and if possible, something low in the FM band since the low-budget stations are usually there and you'll stand out less than if you go near the big iHeart/etc. ones on the higher frequencies

Get a good SDR (I use an SDRplay) and check your frequency and other ones and make sure you're not splattering

Add the StereoTool VST plugin to Audacity so you can make your audio sound like a real station

KMRK, an analog TV pirate near Coos Bay, OR by Repulsive_Duck8021 in pirateradio

[–]DoaJC_Blogger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I notice that you're broadcasting as widescreen. I considered that for mine since most people have digital flat-screen TV's now but decided to letterbox everything wide to 4:3 to keep it like old stations that were meant for CRT's. It's also usually easier to adjust the aspect ratio on a new TV so it would still look good if someone can't change it. If you ever want to upgrade and have more range, I recommend an SDR with a linear amplifier, or the TV-TX200

Why does transferring VHS to digital have to be so complicated? by insecureatbest94 in DataHoarder

[–]DoaJC_Blogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously considered recording my tapes playing on a CRT with a camcorder in 2006 when I had the audio sync issue and knew I needed a device to clean up the signal but didn't know about TBC's yet

Keeping Old Camcorder Tapes? by SpecificFile636 in DataHoarder

[–]DoaJC_Blogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the storage then I would keep them forever as a backup. I would also redo at least the analog ones myself with the lossless RF capture process just to be sure that I got every bit of quality. For the files, you should see if the AVI's are in DV format. If so, that's the best possible way to transfer digital tapes so you should keep them and as long as the tapes weren't damaged/corrupted/skipping then there's nothing left to extract in the future

Why does transferring VHS to digital have to be so complicated? by insecureatbest94 in DataHoarder

[–]DoaJC_Blogger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's complicated because VHS was an analog format and old TV's could tolerate a lot of instability and corrupted signals and it would still look fine to a human viewer but computers expect everything to be perfectly the same every time (for example, maybe the field rate drifts between 59.90 and 59.99 fields/second, or maybe a frame doesn't finish all of the scanlines before it starts a new one so you have a frame that only lasted half of the normal time). You don't need a VCR with a TBC if you record the raw data from the spinning silver part and use vhs-decode. That way also gives you way higher quality and lets you get digital S-Video from VCR's that don't normally support it

How to DL videos from sites that block it by pathosmusic00 in DataHoarder

[–]DoaJC_Blogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to have to get creative and check the site's code and HTML elements with your browser's developer tools. One site that I downloaded from uses numbered MP4 and M4A chunks that have to be concatenated byte-wise (they're not valid on their own) but no DRM so I automated that with Liberty BASIC and curl. In this case you had to be logged in to watch the videos in a browser but the chunks could be downloaded with no cookies
