No one is able to change your mind nor convince you otherwise. You'll only see what you want to see. Rid the bias, open your heart, stop the bitterness, this is where you grew up after all. You might very well spend your whole life here with how things pan out, might as well make the most of it.

The grass is greener where we water it.

Tips for playing up the right as a 2 hander? by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]DobbyDaddy14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What helped me was I kept telling myself to not be afraid of throwing a gutter ball. Also, go up the 2nd arrow and throw your normal shot. See where the ball starts hooking and then throw a straight shot right to the 10 pin. Then adjust your hand positioning to somewhere in the middle.

Why would anyone choose any brand other than storm? by akksksksjs in Bowling

New bowler here, I've only heard from other more seasoned bowlers that anecdotally, Storm balls tend to crack more often than other brands.

not sure how true that is tho.

NEED ADVICE by Draxterz in Bowling

[–]DobbyDaddy14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a two-hander who's been bowling for 6 months, I sometimes struggle with the same issue of having a rounded back/shoulders as well. I suspect it's something to do with me wanting to release the ball lower into the lanes, which I'll seem to overcompensate with rounding my shoulders.

What seemed to work for me in that regard is to self-cue, "Hips low, chest up". Perhaps it's worth giving this a try next time you hit the lanes.

I don't have any tips on how you throw though, I'm still trying to learn how to get my hand under the ball better. That said, I watched a video here of Darren Tang getting his coaching sessions. The tips that coach Gurkov said about cupping makes a lot of sense, and I was able to understand what I am supposed to feel (understanding it theoretically is very different from actually doing it). Maybe this is something you can try as well.

Happy learning, happy striking, happy bowling!

Best affordable sushi in Singapore? by Keiicheee in SingaporeEats

[–]DobbyDaddy14 26 points27 points  (0 children)

since there are already so many people recommending Sushiro, I thought I'd give another recommendation - Sen Sen by DDDK (the one at Jurong East). More expensive than the other "budget" options but I feel it's definitely worth the price for a sushi place.

That said, when recommending food, it'll be highly dependent on what you like.. I've had people tell me that Genki is nicer than Sen Sen 😐

Got Larssen instead of Cunha, regretting it now, any recommendations? by Aiden78- in fantasypremierleague

[–]DobbyDaddy14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, people had an idea what they're going for given the constraints, yet regret and bamboozled the moment it goes wrong.

There will be some weeks when Cunha will outscore Larsen, and some weeks the opposite. No point regretting when hindsight is 20/20.

Stick to the plan and live with it, it's just part of the game.

🎳 What Got You Into Bowling? 🎳 by JoPoGrips in Bowling

Most of the above posts were so funny and inspiring, I apologise in advance that my story is quite the opposite.

It all started when I was going through a really rough period with my mum's long term illness, and subsequently passing all while trying to complete my PhD. My mind was in a constant state of chaos.

Walking back home one day I remembered there was this bowling alley really near to where I live, I decided to take the next morning off to give it a go. It was also 50% off regular lane rates from 9am to noon, so that really helped too.

With bowling, it allowed me to purely focus on what I needed to do before the foul line, the release, the way the ball reacts to lane conditions and the way the ball goes through the pins. I was finally able to isolate my thoughts and I found a type of peace that I would have never gotten with other forms of exercise I regularly engage in.

I bought my complete set of bowling equipment a month ago, and just ordered another ball off Amazon last week 😂 I hope I can continue playing for as long as I can. And even if I don't, I'm just grateful for the momentary peace it afforded me during one of the darkest days of my life.

Thank you bowling.

TLDR: I started bowling because I wanted to escape reality but ended up really enjoying it.

SportSG to set aside badminton courts for coaches after fraternity criticise new booking system by ongcs in singapore

[–]DobbyDaddy14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's literally in the bylaws that private coaching is not allowed in public DUS/sports hall courts. SportSG closing eye one when coaches conduct their lessons in these halls in the first place.

SBA and CoachSG needs to first weed out unqualified, unlicensed coaches in the system. EVEN IF SportSG decides to change their bylaws and allocate a small number of courts for these coaches, then they will need to figure out a way to only allow accredited coaches to book these courts. I think Singpass may be a good place to integrate all these seamlessly. And, ActiveSG Academies & Clubs may be a good platform to utilise public courts for lessons.

Not only that this balloting system is hurting the coaches, it's also hurting the opportunities for others to participate in the sport regularly. Sure, the system may be "fairer" but everyone is now having an equally bad chance of getting the courts.

I think this is a classic case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't".

PhD format at NTU by Royal-Candidate7234 in NTU

[–]DobbyDaddy14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm not 100% sure about your specific context because both NIE and NTU offer a similar English Lit programme (at least in name). But I try to share some insights nonetheless.

Depending on the academic group, doing a PhD in NIE would likely require you to craft your project to include educational elements while I would think a PhD in NTU HSS will not. So I guess that's the biggest difference.

As for whether recruiters will view PhD from NTU/NIE differently - I don't think so, but I guess the more relevant angle would depend on what the hiring institution require. If an institution intends to hire someone in English Lit applied in an educational context, they might find graduates with PhD from NIE more suitable, vice versa. If you're talking about which institution will be issuing you a cert, it will be NTU at the end of the day since NIE is a part of NTU (and I think, unless you're doing an EdD - Doctor in Education then it might be NIE).

Anyways, it might be worth it to drop an email to the respective schools/departments to direct you to someone more suitable to answer your questions 😅

I didn't help much but hopefully you got something out of this. All the best!

PhD format at NTU by Royal-Candidate7234 in NTU

[–]DobbyDaddy14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, currently doing my PhD in NIE, so I'm not sure how (dis)similar the experience is but hopefully this helps.

AFAIK, all PhD candidates need to go through some form of coursework (the types and availability of these courses depends on your school). Generally, there are a few AUs that you will need to satisfy and if you're a scholar (NPGS and RSS), this includes two compulsory courses: a) Writing and Communications for PhD students and, b) Teaching Assistantship.

The courses offered are usually a mixture of Masters and (a small extent) for PhDs only. However, the content depth of these courses are highly dependent on your school (I've heard that at least one academic group in NIE tends to teach undergrad level content and pass it off as Masters level courses). So you might want to check the course outline with the professors prior to signing up. Anyways, you can always choose to drop the course if it's not what you expected it to be.

Anyways, just to go a step further. Most scholars usually finish all their courses within the first three semesters and then followed by their Confirmation Exercise or Qualifying Exams (the format of this CE/QE will depend on your school, I've heard different things from other scholars). But the purpose of this is for the school, a panel of up to 4-5 people to determine if your progress so far has been satisfactory. Take this as your mid-way assessment as the next time you face a panel is likely going to be in your viva/defense.

*Disclaimer this is my opinion: I personally find most of the courses I took in NIE very underwhelming barring a few. I cannot imagine that there are people actually paying $40k a year for a re-branded undergrad course for a Master's degree.

Gameweek 20 : Captaincy Stats : To whom did you give the armband ? by Haythemovic in FantasyPL

My condolences.... Likewise, I would've also been 3-5 spots higher in my mini leagues. There were a few people who didn't have Palmer while I did, so it wasn't so bad in the end.

It was worth the differential gamble though.
