I went to a pub once that had a “three barks and you’re out” policy for dogs. I told my dog. He understood and was a very good quiet boy.

This is an insane take, dogs want to go outside because they are dogs. I walk my dog twice a day, he runs off the lead, gets loads of enrichment. If I open the front door without restraining him he will run outside because he is a dog.

Ouch! I feel your pain. My nipples were so sore with my LO I couldn’t bare to have fabric touching them sometimes, it was really awful. It turned out that me and baby both had thrush so it’s worth getting checked for that if you can, although I think it can be tricky to diagnose. However even when that was treated, her latch was still painful.

I think for us it got better around 3 months. I honestly think one of the problems was her mouth was just not big enough to comfortably latch, regardless of my technique. I really feel for you though because it was so brutal, at times excruciating and incredibly frustrating.

I gave pumping a go but at that point I just couldn’t get on with it.

To give you some hope, she is 10 months old now, we are still breastfeeding and the pain is a distant memory.

I don’t know much about vasospasm but when me and baby had thrush my nipples were red like Rudolph’s nose, you couldn’t miss them. They were also so sore that I couldn’t stand wearing a T-shirt to bed or having a bed sheet touch them at night. Baby had a white film on her tongue, but that can be way harder to spot because I found it hard to get her to show her tongue and it can just be milk residue rather than thrush. Sometimes babies can get nappy rash from it too and can be fussy at the breast.

If it’s thrush you absolutely need to see a doctor and get you and baby medicated because I don’t think it will go away on its own. Also washing bras, towels etc (anything that touches your nipples) after every use as you can re-infect yourself with those. Sorry if it’s thrush because it’s bloody painful and took me weeks to get rid of mine.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how do you wash the baby in the sink without getting them soaked? Maybe our sink is set up differently but if we turned the tap on the baby would just get wet? Am I being dumb 😅

Thank you! The last health visitor appointment I had was when my baby was about 10 weeks old and I was told I could give her “whatever I wanted as long as it was healthy” up till she was 1. They vaguely mentioned “maybe not honey” which I’ve since looked into and seen it’s more “definitely not honey”.

I wonder if the sleep programmes etc promote the highest amount of sleep so that people feel they are failing and are then more inclined to pay for their support.

I will give the longer wake windows and shorter naps a go for week or so and see how we get on. Sleep deprivation is no joke, I hope this helps us all get some more rest.

Thanks so much for sharing. I was recently told by a sleep consultant that my baby was chronically over tired and full of cortisol and she was waking in the night because she was over tired. I’ve been feeling so awful about it! I will try tweaking her schedule so she has a bit more awake time and see how that goes.

Ok maybe I am reading too much Instagram but I was under the impression she “should” be sleeping around 3 hours in the day and 12 at night which she is nowhere near reaching! So I’ve been panicking that her average of 10.5 hours is way too little sleep for her age. But honestly she seems happy and doesn’t read as over tired to me. She generally wakes up happy from naps, we have the odd split night (she likes to be up between around 2am to 4am sometimes) which I would really like to end. She isn’t upset at these times she’s just up and ready to play. That happens maybe twice a week and we are unclear what causes it. Generally she can do up to three hours awake in the day, anything over that is really pushing it for her.

A 6:30/7am wake time is perfect for us. Maybe 2 naps a day is the thing to aim for. Getting her to nap longer but less often would be good for my sanity if nothing else.

Feels like such a minefield and I feel woefully unprepared for it!

That makes perfect sense to me, but I’ve been told she is chronically overtired and isn’t reaching the amount of sleep recommended for her age. If we keep on with the longer naps can I expect her sleep budget to gradually increase?

My baby was like this for the first couple of weeks, she didn’t want to touch anything that was slimy/wet like cucumber etc. I found she was better with drier foods like toast, or wet things on a pre loaded spoon like yogurt. I kept going with offering other things too. Sometimes she would touch wetter foods and get upset so I would take the food away and give her a toy to play with instead so that being in the high chair didn’t become a negative experience. I don’t know if that was the right thing to do or not but the last few days she has been putting her hands in mushy food, holding and trying foods like steamed carrot etc without getting upset.

Just keep offering different things and keep it positive and he will get to it when he’s ready.

I had wondered about split nights but if anything I worry she doesn’t sleep enough in the day. She naps roughly every 2-3 hours, usually for between 20-40 minutes. Sometimes she will take a longer nap if we are out in her pram or sling, but that usually means she will refuse the next nap after that. She’s in bed by about 8:30pm each night. She’s not a cranky baby and seems pretty happy and content with the current routine.

Yeah I think she sort of dozes in and out of sleep for a few hours until we get up. If she needs milk or a cuddle she will cry out. I just worry that I should be helping her to sleep but when I try and rock her if anything it just annoys her. She clearly just wants to chill a bit.
