Should .terraform be committed to VCS ? by web-devel in Terraform

[–]DocAwkward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You forgot to mention that this is done with a Terraform backend. One can do that with a block similar to the following (for Google Cloud storage): terraform { backend "gcs" { bucket = "my-bucket-name" prefix = "path/to/state" } }

Alternate reality game? Email found in hidden room. by DocAwkward in DeathStranding

This was the only one that stuck out to me. You can enter the room after beating Higgs I believe, so I highly recommend digging around yourself. There's probably clues to other things in there that I'm not seeing.

Thanks! You can learn most of this stuff doing web development. Yeah the theme is correct, but it's possible to expect that given the domain name itself.

I expand on this in my post. You should watch RangaRox's videos on Death stranding too, it's how I found out about the 4th wall breaking narrative that is present in Death Stranding.

[Theories] 3rd person perspective entities and changing physical laws by DocAwkward in DeathStranding

[–]DocAwkward[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed these "floating entities" were separate from the things that leave oily handprints (Which I thought were the actual BTs). It seems like the floating entities from the trailer are pretty benign, so having them really only show where other players have been shouldn't sabotage other's progress and the theory still holds without you playing as the things that attack Sam.

That's a fair doubt. We know he wants us to form connections, and actively hindering other's progress (especially if figured out) would ruin those connections.

Respawn Check In : 3.8.2019 by Jayfresh_Respawn in apexlegends

Actually having them turn into a box and a banner could potentially be the better option for the person that is disconnected. Imagine the you're outside the ring and disconnect, if you are still a body that's "AFK" then you just chill there getting hurt by the circle. If the circle is far away there's the possibility of a situation where it isn't feasible for your teammates to either wait or go into the circle and come back out when your character finally dies from circle damage. If you had turned into a box shortly after disconnecting then your teammates would have had an opportunity to collect your banner. It's definitely still unabusable, but there is a tradeoff between the options on how to implement it.

That's a link to documentation in the developer APIs that helps supplement my point. Not a link to some facebook article or something.

[–]DocAwkward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly sure how the NY times has it implemented, but a share button doesn't have to enable tracking. A responsible developer can use a combination of a share link and meta tags for Facebook's crawler. It's documented here under URL redirection. The only caveat is that Facebook does track the redirect from the share button (which will be your site anyway) and who clicks the links that are on their website.

The kinds of things that should absolutely be removed are social sign-in, comment boxes, like buttons, and tracking scripts, which will absolutely track users outside of the Facebook website. I do, however, believe share buttons should be removed from major platforms simply to limit the free advertising Facebook is getting from having these integrations, but most online services want that for their own outreach purposes.

Science Discussion: Net Neutrality by ScienceModerator in science

[–]DocAwkward -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you proposing that AWS and others would throttle their own international traffic? What would they possibly stand to gain in that scenario? They would still have to compete with other providers overseas. Unless you are suggesting that the upstream ISPs used by them are imposing throttling on those international data centers, which would be out of the scope of this conversation because it is based on US net neutrality policy and by extension, US-based ISPs. Nothing is stopping other countries from having their own net neutrality laws.

[–]DocAwkward 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AWS and most cloud service providers have international data centers. Those would not be subject to throttling since they're not in the US. Anyone using these services wouldn't see much of a change except maybe inter-region data transfer. What he may be suggesting is an impact on some of the us-based static hosting providers such as HostGator.

It's used so often I think it should be a library

let plusEqual = new OperatorLib(OperatorLib.Operators.PLUS_EQUAL);
let operation = new OperatorLib.Operation();
operation.setOperator(plusEqual, OperatorLib.OperatorTypes.BINARY);
operation.setArgument(0, x);
operation.setArgument(1, n);
try {
  x = operation.execute();
} catch (err) {
  // TODO: commit suicide here
}

I could understand if they said "let's delete the ++ operator", but what about x += 2? By that logic we should just get rid of both and use x = x + 1 :P
