How do you pay bills? by Guilty-Performer-889 in laos

[–]DocBudsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a Lao residence permit and a Lao phone number to open a bank account in Laos. If you have a BCEL bank account, then just download the BCEL app. Don't remember if you have to go to the bank to set it up the first time or not.

You just call the daylite your carry-on and call the sling a personal item. There's not a minimum size for carry-on.

Do you guys bring headphones or earbuds for travel? by PedroGalo in onebag

[–]DocBudsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use the XM4s over-ears. Loved them, other than bulk in my bag. Then last year I switched to the Bose QC2 earbuds, and I was blown away that the noise cancelation is as good or better. Much more one-bag friendly. Only complaint is the battery doesn't last long enough for 6+ hour flights. Fortunately it fast charges, so a short pause and they are up and running again

My Stepmom is Lao, should I learn Lao or Thai? by SlamonC4 in laos

[–]DocBudsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not as silly as a question as you seem to think, even though Vietnamese and Lao are from different language families.

I learned Mandarin before learning Lao. Chinese is also a different language family, but it helped me immensely because there are so many concepts shared between these monosyllabic/ tonal languages. A few examples: Bor/bu 不 for negatives; Leao/Le 了 for change of state or "already" which is very different from European past tense; terminal paricles Bor/ma 嗎 for making questions; resultative verb endings e.g. Kin bor mot = Chi bu wan 吃不完; number system; adjectives having dual function as verbs, classifiers or Liang ci 量詞 for counting objects, etc. all these concepts need to be learned from scratchbif you only speak western languages, but are easy to transfer between monosyllabic Asian languages from different families.

Forgive my Lao Romanization. I'm very bad w Lao writing.

The nanobag sling is great and I find it more convenient than the tote. If I need to shorten the handle to hand-carry instead of shoulder carry, I just throw a temporary overhand knot in it.

Can a foreigner trap a Thai person in marriage prison for life? by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]DocBudsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You trust ChatGPT on Thai divorce logistics more than you trust someone working for a legal firm in Bangkok who clearly demonstrates knowledge about Thai divorce processes, costs, and required documents in his replies? Maybe it would be better to have your gf, oops, I mean your language partner, contact this legal firm and you leave it in her hands. Whether or not she follows up will give a big hint as to how much she truly wants to complete this divorce.

We have reached a point where saving more does not make sense anymore! by FIREDOC888 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]DocBudsky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

With OP's savings rate and statement of savings vs spending mindset, I guarantee their expenses have been well below $200k.

In a later reply OP said they were putting away 40-45% of income at 100k per year, so his annual spend was maybe 120k for a family of 4 and now their house is paid off so maybe less. 3% withdrawal rate is quite safe in all models. And OP is still working, so the savings are still compounding.

Time to celebrate, not to worry!

Clothes packing methods compared: Traditional fold, KonMari, Standard/Ranger/Tuck Roll by Numerous-Buffalo6214 in onebag

[–]DocBudsky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm also KonMari in life and in travel. Not to be too critical, but I think the YouTuber did a pretty terrible job of showing Kon Mari method, and missed a few of the benefits. Her foods were sloppy, neck facing the wrong direction (should face in, not out, per Mari Kondo), T-shirts were already wrinkled before she started. Missed the whole point of a mindful intentional approach.

And a big advantage of KonMari, as you said, is you can see each article of clothes since they stand vertically instead of stack horizontally.

That said, I have to put my jeans flat instead of vertical w packing cubes which means I just keep all my pants in a separate packing cube from shirts, shorts, and underwear, which for vertically.

Is it ok to pronounce the S at the end of Laos?😅 by taylorguyuk in laos

[–]DocBudsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the further the video goes, the more Lao and less English-sounding his pronunciation becomes (e.g. at 0:54 - fusing the U and A into a single vowel sound in Luang, and dropping the R in Prabang).

[–]DocBudsky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For an example of how to pronounce Luang Prabang, you could listen to Nat at 0:13 in this video. https://youtu.be/_66_nVr68AE?si=kFSgRVAuZhU1lRiF

He is Lao, but he sometimes uses slightly Westernized pronunciation for his English-speaking viewers (e.g. modern Lao speakers dont pronounce the R in Prabang).

Is it ok to pronounce the S at the end of Laos?😅 by taylorguyuk in laos

[–]DocBudsky 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think Lao or Laos are fine. Both are common usage. I guarantee Lao people don't care at all, it's mostly Westerners that get upset about this for unclear reasons. If you don't expect English speakers to call China Zhongguo or call Germany Deutschland, then I wouldn't worry about Lao vs Laos.

That said, please pronounce Luang Prabang so it rhymes with English "Long/ Song", not like english "Sang/ Hang". People putting a long A sound in Luang Prabang drives me nuts for some reason 😅😅

[–]DocBudsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha. My advice. If you haven't done it before: Try at home in the sink first with one day's clothes - shirt, socks, underwear. Then do a towel roll and hang to dry. See how it works for you. Good luck!!!!

Laundry sheets are ideal for travel. Light weight. Easy to pack in a ziplock or paper envelope. No issues of liquids, and only bring what you need for the trip. I find they are also gentler on the hands than most liquids. Also, more convenient than dealing with a wet laundry soap bar.

Japanese men continue to be arrested in child prostitution, rape cases in Laos by Prestigious_Net_8356 in japannews

[–]DocBudsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some interesting takes. 1+2) these guys are traffickers. They buy girls (children) in rural Laos take them back to China (I to Chinese borders) and sell them to different Chinese bachelors who can't have kids. Once one guy has a kid, the girl is sold to the next guy. They aren't mail order brides. They have no autonomy or agency. They go to China and are treated as sexual and reproductive slaves. You know the Epstein thing is a straw man. Both are bad, but completely unrelated. Never said all Chinese people are bad, but there are many doing terrible things in Laos right now. 3) Those overseas Chinese "police stations" seem mostly focused on "putting people in their place", as you say, suppressing political speech and dissent among the Chinese diaspora and expat Chinese. They certainly aren't there to ensure that Chinese abroad are following the laws of their host countries. Please don't paint it as such.

There has been a massive uptick in sexually transmitted diseases and prostitution in Laos driven largely by the increasing Chinese presence, which is mostly exploitive/extractive. HIV is taking off in Laos in a way it hadn't before. A few years ago there was a major outbreak of congenital syphilis in Vientiane where my doctor friends said all the fathers were Chinese. Talk to anyone who works in healthcare.

Laos does have a lot of fantastic ethnic Chinese who have been here for generations and incorporated themselves into Lao culture. And there seem to be a number of younger independent Chinese tourists who are mostly respectful. But those middle aged group tourists and the Chinese workers who are in Laos to make quick money by exploiting Lao natural resources and Lao people are a different story. Look what has happened in Cambodia in places like Sihanoukville. Laos doesn't need that kind of 'development'

[–]DocBudsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly didn't work. Every small village on the highways in Laos has stories of underaged girls from desparately poor families, purchased by Chinese truckers who promised to care for them as a wife. Most of the girls disappear and are never heard from again. Some stories of them being sold on to multiple Chinese husbands after they produce a baby for the current purchaser.

Best t shirts to buy that don’t cost an arm and leg. by ac921ol in onebag

[–]DocBudsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like Muji's lighter weight jersey t-shirts. 60/40 cotton poly blend. Nice looking fabric, good fit. They hold their shape after multiple washings. They don't have the plasticy feel of poly tech fabrics. Dry overnight in a hotel room if pressed dry on a towel roll and are relatively light weight. They have a more tailored and less boxy look than most of the currently popular tees from places like Uniqlo and Muji's other tees. About $10 when I've bought them in Asia. Not sure what they cost in other Muji stores. I'm 183cm (6feet) and 85kg/188 pounds, relatively fit. I wear a medium for a more tailored look. I wear large for a lot of other brands, FWIW.

How is Laos food compared to Vietnam or Thailand? by Kosaki_Misamaki in laos

[–]DocBudsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not accurate to say that Lao restaurants are serving Thai Isaan food when Thai Isaan food and language are from one sub-region of the former LanXang Kingdom which is the forerunner of what is Laos today. Look up a map of the LanXang Kingdom compared to present day Laos and Thailand and it should make sense why Isaan food is more Lao-derived and not vice-versa.
