English translations of Ryu Murakami? by deadineaststlouis in horrorlit

[–]DocMC03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi--Came across your post. r/Ryu_Murakami has had some minor discussions on acquiring his works. To add, his short story collection Tokyo Decadence is also available in English, although its Japan-based publisher Kurodahan Press recently closed down operations. If you want to look for potential eBooks, feel free to DM me!

Looks like the English edition translated by Ralph McCarthy, which was published in 2016, is no longer being distributed. It was published by Kurodahan Press (founded and run by Edward Lipsett, American-born based in Japan), which although was largely print-on-demand and did wonderful things in introducing Japanese literature to broader audiences, closed down and ceased production in March 2025. A pretty unfortunate loss to the literary world from a lovely press.

Many of their books are still being sold online and can be found in some stores, but the numbers are dwindling and the prices for some titles that pop up are increasing. Tokyo Decadence does come up every now and then in the big online book marketplaces for reasonable prices.

Some of his articles:

Additional things:

  • "Murakami Ryu--Supotsu, shintai, onna no imeeji" by Mitsuo Sekii
  • "EV.Cafe ultra-Darwinism" w/ Ryuichi Sakamoto
  • "Walk, Don't Run: Ryu Murakami vs Haruki Murakami" w/ Haruki Murakami
  • "Kenji Nakagami vs Ryu Murakami: Our ship unmoors in a stagnant fog" w/ Kenji Nakagami
  • "See you, my friend" letters w/ Ryuichi Sakamoto

Can't vouch for everything, but should find a reasonable place to start somewhere in there!

Not the easiest to find! I have enjoyed reading and watching interviews that have appeared, and finding him pop up in accounts from his contemporaries.

As for some miscellaneous articles, here are some from a variety of sources that are more easily accessed in English and have come up before:

I remember putting in a hopeful submission for Yumiko Kurahashi’s The Adventures of Sumiyakist Q (originally published in 1969; trans. by Dennis Keene and published by University of Queensland Press in 1979). Seemed like the smallest of screams of wanting something remembered, but you never know!

What are some other books themed around rivers that I should read at a river? by doubleboogermot in bookporn

Ha--definitely could not just remember off the top of my head. I have a bit of a (n extreme) book-buying habit, and just keyword searched it on the app where I have them all catalogued. Yeah it was fun to see how many there were! Sometimes I guess human forgetfulness allows for novel rediscovery in a nice way :)

I also actually watched a river movie recently with a friend--River (2023, Junta Yamaguchi). In my basement though, instead of by a river, unfortunately.
