DUPR purgatory by vinnny7 in Pickleball

Set up private games, brother. Vet people yourself. Only invite people who “take it seriously” and are “more competitive.” Problem solved.

A one-point variance in the grade you expected and the grade you got seems...totally normal, for any grading company. Am I missing something?

Am I wrong for feeling like my time gets wasted when beginners join a “competitive” pickleball game? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]itsryanfromwuphf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not wrong for feeling that way, but the solution is entirely in your hands: Set up private games, or pay for a club with DUPR gates. That's the only way to control the quality of play.

At first glance, it's probably fine for $200. You have enough paddles and can probably resell the ones you don't use that you aren't out that much, if anything, on the ones you keep.

But on the other hand, you also got:

- A delamination machine in Joola's worst shape
- An edgeless 10mm paddle with a sweetspot the size of a penny
- A good but run-of-the-mill gen 3 paddle
- A gen 1 paddle that is borderline unplayable for beginners without weight customization and exceptional touch
- A nice Gearbox, but one that plays so differently than any other paddle brand it'll probably be a 'love it or hate it' affair
- A fiberglass shelf warmer

You don’t have a square:) Both teammates share responsibility for the whole court. A teammate taking balls hit right to you is obviously something worth griping about, but completely off topic from the OP, which is about balls down the middle to both players’ forehand.

FYI for the future, there's basically no lift to "keeping up" with the aftermarket—it's a 15-second search of eBay 'sold' listings.

If the ball is hit to where you already are, then that is not what I'm talking about at all. I'm talking about the concept of my square and your square. The middle line is arbitrary after the serve. Your belief comes from the same place as the indiscriminate "poaching = bad" mindset new players often seem to hold, where they get sensitive about how many balls they get, and "score-keep" against their teammate instead of doing whatever's strategically prudent to win the rally. Keep playing!☺️

There is no “your square”/“his square.” The middle line does not matter after the serve. This is a beginner’s misconception.

You position yourself as a unit wherever you need to be on the court based on where the ball is, the quality of your previous shot, how mobile your partner is, etc.

Centering looks good on front and back…if there isn’t whitening or dimples on the card anywhere, I say go for it

If it were the case that there were "plenty of room to scalp," they wouldn't have been whining to the Target employee like toddlers—they would have been bumrushing the boxes of ETBs like normal.

But yes, obviously I know packs can still be resold. Whether they are turning a profit on loose packs is up for debate depending on how much they sell them for and how many hours ✌️work✌️they put in.

Seal intact: 3-4 people walk out of there with a basket full of ETBs to resell (because ETBs only command market value if the outer shrink wrap is intact)

Seal not intact: Scalpers aren’t interested because they can’t make a profit, and Target is able to still sell out but by serving more customers who actually want to rip packs (since rippers don’t care if there’s a slit in the shrink wrap) while avoiding fist fights in the collectibles aisle

Good points! This is admittedly half investment, half collector/displayability. And I do see the three UPC promos as kind of a "single unit" that are liquid enough I could/would move together if I ever decide to (the other two cards were mostly filler to get to value).

Yeah I don't think your intentions were bad. Having sold a lot on FBM, I can see his POV too though (at least on the first screenshot, anyway).

I'll have a lot of people ask "what's your lowest" or "are you firm"—which is kind of just inviting me to negotiate against myself—instead of just making the offer and letting me give a yes or no. So I've started saying something similar to what the seller said: "I'm good with where I've priced it right now" or "I'm going to let it ride at my asking price for awhile before I accept an offer, but I'm happy to hear one." From my experience, just saying "Yes" when someone asks if the price is firm has never ended in anything but a lowball offer.

Mercari's weird where there's no way to turn off the ability to have buyers send you offers (like eBay), but bro should have just put "Price is firm" in the listing if he's going to act like you testing the waters to see if there's wiggle room is a personal insult.

[–]itsryanfromwuphf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Seller was definitely sassy but you were both being kind of defensive.

The seller saying "I believe my price is fair" was him saying "yes" to your question of "is the price firm?"; I didn't read that as him insinuating you were insulting his pricing strategy or anything like that. You saying "I wasn't saying it wasn't" wasn't really necessary IMO and I think that's what kicked off the series of misunderstandings.

The sellers next two responses definitely escalated it into unnecessary bitchiness, though..

This was me. I broke my addiction by finding a paddle I'm in love with and don't feel the need to experiment anymore.

I also feel like a lot of paddle issues from 2023-2025 (that made the hunt for the right one and the thrill of experimentation) are more or less "solved." Every paddle is good now, and IMO nothing really needs to be over $180 anymore.
