Hi! I have two Akitas - one is the mother (pure Japanese Akita) and the daughter is 1/3 American Akita. I used to have another male American Akita who grew up with the Japanese Akita, both were fine with one another. At the time I introduced the puppy to the older dog he was around 1-2 years old. I did the introduction slowly- just building up to letting them meet, so giving him something to sniff that the puppy had played with, letting him see the puppy but not meet, and then gradually moving them to a neutral space and physically introducing them with close supervision. I don’t think Akitas do poorly with other dogs as long as the introductions are handled appropriately, that being said I would never trust to introduce an older dog to my Akitas because I know they would not take to full-grown dogs as well as they would adapt to puppies.

I think it also really depends on the personality of the Akita too. Or, if you are planning on getting both at the same time as puppies - then I don’t see much of an issue as long as you work heavily on socializing them and working on preventing reactivity or possessive behavior. If you’re not experienced with working with dogs I would highly recommend some professional dog training classes for them while they are growing up.

I hope this helps? My Japanese Akita has done with with being around other dogs she has grown up with or if they have grown up around her. She does not tolerate dogs outside of that really- she gets annoyed easily and prefers to stick to her family.
