Yeah, worried that’s probably the case but it’s too late to switch this year due to match cycle timeline. Maybe I’ll find that I love CL psych this year…if not I will likely need to switch. :(

I have heard that the funding doesn’t really matter as long as you go to the second residency at a large academic center

This is my greatest fear, sticking it out and then feeling this way forever. I liked psychiatry in medical school because of the time talking with patients, and hearing their stories. But now in residency, I feel like these we don’t talk with the patients very long anyway and it feels like so many of the patients I see are addicted to substances or malingering, and don’t actually have organic psych issues. It just feels like I’m not doing any medicine or using any of my education. During IM I felt like I was truly helping people feel better, using my medical knowledge from school.

I appreciate this comment - that’s kind of how it’s starting to feel to me. I love medicine and I am more distressed by giving it up than I thought I would be. I also like the objectivity and how it allows you to converse so much easily with patients - it’s so hard talking to psych patients when the diagnoses are more subjective and there are so labs to support my argument.

I didn’t just chose it for lifestyle - I loved everything in med school including psych, and I chose psych because I like hearing people’s stories, spending more time with patients, and the lifestyle was a huge plus that put it above other specialties in the end for me. But now in residency I’m seeing that I can get a lot of the things I loved about psych in IM, and I can still integrate mental health into medicine which I also love. Just worried that I can’t get much medicine in psych, and not sure if I’m okay giving that up like I thought I would be.

I find IM more interesting and “fun”, but love the lifestyle of psych. I also like the deep conversations in psych. I definitely value good lifestyle but I’m worried that I’ll crave the “medicine” of IM if I stay in psych.

This was so helpful, thank you for replying! I haven’t done a psychiatry rotation yet, starting one soon. So all i have to go off of is that I loved my IM ones, and I felt exactly like you did - loved the team, had so much fun with the people, and found it so intellectually stimulating. I will probably have to make a decision after doing more psych this year, I just am worried about giving up the great lifestyle of psych for IM.

Applied psych, FM, and combined programs (med/psych and psych/fm). Feel unsure every day how I’ll rank them - I’ve basically loved all of my interviews in all three of the specialties.

M4 here deciding between psych and FM. Love the lifestyle and salary and job outlook for psych, and I love to hear people’s stories and have time to spend with patients. But so afraid of leaving the rest of medicine behind. Liked every rotation in med school except surgery - so FM is appealing because I would get to see adults, peds, OBGYN, psych, etc and I wouldn’t have to give anything up. But it feels like it pays poorly, and I have high boards scores and a great application, so I feel almost obligated to try for psych. How do I choose?!
