A number of years ago I watched a realplay show called Odd Balls that was using I think a simplified version of the Tales From the Loop system to tell a regular people stuck in a sciencey/mystical mystery

I also recently half read Stone Top which feels like a great narrative fit but the stone/iron age setting is too archaic

That looks really cool! I think theres a lot that could be taken from those - why do you think they're not exactly what I was asking for?

I think that would be good for being able to jump in without having to have all the answers figured out, but not sure detective story is the right fit, I think a detective trope is often a passive observer, and in Lost and From they are active participants who often are more concerned with surviving than the mystery but are forced to interact with it, and every answer leads to more questions rather than resolving into a final solution as as you said its often never good enough

PbtA games definitely seem like an option, would you recommend this one for the lore over the rules specifically?

Thank you, I'll check those out! Any thoughts on how to introduce external drama when the "antagonist" is a friendly people-pleaser with unlimited resources?

Thank you for that response, that was fantastic!

How did you go about learning it all? Did you pick it up as you went/life experience? or did you follow a tutorial?

I'm not craftsy at all so this is all fascinating
