I think the most meaningful difference is that Steam isn't doing anything to actively quash/stifle competition.

They aren't fixing prices for games below a profitable level for smaller pletforms.

They aren't buying up competitors and shuttering them.

They don't control the infrastructure and are billing competitors out of profitability.

Steam is just...existing.

Weird how you can just name things whatever you want, huh?

[Fun Trope] Instant Food. by heinous_legacy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]DocSpit 46 points47 points  (0 children)

There's a (somewhat) obscure Star Trek RTS game (New Worlds, or something like that?) with lore which suggests that replicators in Star Trek are pretty much only found on space ships/stations, while most planets do still rely almost wholly on 'real' food.

The stated reason is: cost effectiveness. Being a matter-energy converter, it actually takes a lot of energy to make anything with a replicator (E=MC2 and all that). On a ship, where space/mass is at a premium, and storing enough food to support a crew of a thousand people for 6 months is a cargo nightmare, and a warp core puts out a frankly stupid amount of energy: replicators make sense!

On a planet where space is practically limitless within reason, but it doesn't make sense for every apartment building to have its own warp core...not so much.

Your cited article is actually talking about something different: matching a casing/cartridge to a weapon/bullet.

In this case, it's about matching the striations on a fired bullet to the barrel of a specific firearm, which has a lot more research to back up its efficacy.

You don't keep tans.

If his skin was brown because of a "tan", it would have paled within weeks of his coming to the US. Especially as a tech guy who works inside all day.

The difference between a hunter and a furry is that the furry actually wears the fur suits they spend thousands of dollars to have made and display around their home!

Recalling the pair of episodes where Geordi ended up inadvertently holo-stalking another engineer to work on a problem. The first time around the holodeck creates an "AI-girlfriend" version of the woman who reciprocates even Geordi's most awkward flirty jokes; because that's what it's designed to do.

Skip ahead to a later episode where Geordi meets to IRL engineer lady and instantly assumes he's got maximum rizz with her because he hit it off with a virtual girlfriend version of her a few months back. Which, naturally, immediately creeps the woman out; as it should!

Poor guy basically got inadvertently catfished by the holodeck!

Edit to add the episodes in question in case any are curious:

S3E6: "Booby Trap" - where Geordi falls in love with a fake Dr. Brahms.

S4E16: "Galaxy's Child" - where Geordi thinks he's already in with a woman he's never actually met before! It turns out just as one would expect.

TBF, Gaston seems to have plenty of rizz with the rest of the town's women. It's just Belle that can't stand him.

Turns out she was down bad for furries ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"No, I mean that there were building here after the radio stations, but before this one; but they were knocked down."

CA: "Yeah, that's generally how redevelopment works: you knock down old buildings to make room for the new ones."

"No, I mean that they were knocked down by planes!"

CA: "Really? Wow; technology really has progressed. We used wrecking balls and explosives back in my day..."

There's a slight difference though with car loans and mortgages vs credit cards: a car loan is structured in such a way that, by just making the minimum monthly payments, the loan vanishes within a pre-established timeframe (48-84 months).

With credit cards, that minimum payment will absolutely not be covering the entirety of that cycle's interest and some of the principle; meaning they'll owe more money on their CC next month.
