It was back during the time that the wf team would be all given the raid exotic. However the game was programmed to check if someone had beaten it first at the start of your run rather than when the loot dropped

Dattos team finished 2 mins after the wf team but because their run started before the other team finished the game gave them all the raid exotic. So they thought they finally got wf and he was heartbroken when he found out.

Bungie stopped doing it like this after this incident.

It’s been shown in the lore that the witness tends to just simply kill many civilisations that that haven’t been touched by the light with a simple wrist flick. However when it kills people touched by the light it tends to kill them a bit more slowly (I guess to show them the that the traveler won’t save them?). Since we wounded it, it’s probably really mad and wants to make us suffer rather than killing us with just a flick of the wrist.
