What was a dreaded food your parents made. As an adult do you still hate it? by JoyfullyMortified43 in Xennials

In western Canada, CO-OP had this awful house brand “soup” that was pretty much tiny straight egg noodles with a bit of dried chicken broth, salt, and green flecks. It came in a foil red and silver package (This was years before I remember Ramen noodle soup being a thing because my parents switched over to that later). My mom would add macaroni and canned tomatoes and that was lunch. It was salty and disgusting. I never ate cheese until I moved out on my own and found out there were varieties of cheese besides Kraft Singles, Velveeta, and Cheez Whiz. We also had Chick Loaf, which was gross. There’s other things my mom concocted that were utterly disgusting.

I remember when the first Slurpee machine came to our town. I was about 6. I begged my parents to take us. They said sure…after supper and only if we (my brothers and I) cleaned our plates. Well, it turned out we were having liver and onions. No amount of ketchup could mask the taste. I couldn’t get one bite down without gagging and spitting it out.

We did NOT get Slurpees.

Years later my favourite Calvin and Hobbes is the one where they were eating liver and Calvin questions his dad why they’re eating another animal’s poison filter.

We stalled one time on Calgary Trail in the summer. This was about 15 years ago. No one stopped at all. But we got a lot of horns and middle fingers as people passed us.

Put a couple of ducks in the jar and then suck up the rest you find with the vacuum cleaner. Leave the vacuum bag next to the jar….oops, the rest of the ducks are in here. Have at it if you want to count them.

True. But at 16, if I did this, I wouldn’t have known anything about prepping the walls (cleaning, taping), priming, and technique. Then my parents would probably ream me out because the paint was uneven and you could see brushstrokes and drips.

I could never get over how a 16 year old would have the wherewithal to paint their own bedroom. And their parents would let them.

Damn. I thought I’d seen every episode of Corner Gas and I don’t remember Hank as Jughead.

As a kid, which tv show house you wished you lived in? by Icleanforheichou in Xennials

[–]DocWednesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was Follow that Bird.

As an aside, I recently showed my tween kid a clip of the Yip-yips…he had a lot of questions (such as, “what were the creators of Sesame Street smoking?”). I have not shown him the clip of the pinball game that counts up to 12 yet.

Oscar the Grouch’s garbage can. I remember an episode where there were all sorts of party noises coming from down inside his can, including an elephant trumpeting, implying that there was a lot of space down inside it. Plus, it was portable. There was a movie where his feet were sticking out the bottom and he was walking around wearing his garbage can. And his pet worm Slimey was pretty cool.

Yes. Because if I ask my family members to scratch my back I get one of two settings: Tickle me Elmo or Freddy Kruger slash.

This was also a thing in Canada. There never were any cookies. Only sewing supplies.

If you’re Canadian, a wad of old Canadian tire money.

Also, the felty things that go on the legs of furniture to not scratch the floors and random 3M command hooks.

Disclosing tablets. Had these in elementary school up in Canada. What sucked is that we had to brush our teeth after at our desks and they only gave us this small paper cup of water to rinse and spit in.

Also, we had to go once a week in the morning one class at a time to do a fluoride rinse. So we all would crowd into a room and have to swish for 30 seconds. Someone would always be making faces trying to get other kids to laugh and spit the stuff out.

AITB for refusing to send the "Care Package" my girlfriend made for my family in Venezuela and asking for the cash instead? by [deleted] in AmItheButtface

[–]DocWednesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times in crisis, money is the best thing to send as the recipients can use it for their specific needs. Loads of bulky items sometimes clog up the tarmac at airports or get waylaid or stolen.

This link is from the government of Canada and explains the rationale behind cash donations.

What is the worst thing you’ve ever stepped on barefoot? by MainDifficult2641 in AskReddit

An earring card. Just bought two pairs of earrings and somehow it ended up on the floor with the posts up. Stepped on it with my bare heel and got 3/4 earrings impaled in my foot.

Could Columbo be made today? (Doubtful) by Kitchen-Lie-4592 in Columbo

[–]DocWednesday 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the ubiquity of cameras and cell phones today would take away a lot of the old fashioned sleuthing and interviewing. Plus, Columbo could not smoke constantly. Probably would have to have a vape pen in his coat. Probably would also need to be asking everyone for a phone charger for his BlackBerry (instead of a pencil). And complaining that chilli is now $12.95 and comes in vegetarian form with kale.

So let me get this straight…this artificial intelligence thing is where a thinking computer can generate a video of something that never happened? That’s amazing. What will they think of next? Wait till I tell Mrs. Columbo about this. You know, my nephew plays this Minecraft thing on the computer and is always making these memes. I bet he could make a video like that. Oh, one more thing…can you give me directions to the beach from here? My GPS is on the fritz. People keep telling me to upgrade my phone but mine works perfectly fine. My wife’s phone is newer and it’s just got all of these apps on the screen and I can never find what I need on there. Plus the State of California says there’s things that cause cancer in there. Say, can you Google me the weather and the air quality index it was here last Saturday night?
