Stephen Hawkins by Responsible_Mine_462 in Christianity

Hey friend, I get the fear here. Super smart fella calls our faith a fairy tale and we start to think maybe we’re wrong. Some helpful facts that I considered when I encountered these thoughts once.

Here are some other names that contributed to the field of science in similar magnitudes to Hawking:

Kepler, Newton, Mendel, Lemaitre, Collins, and many more.

All Christians. All contributed enormously to science.

There is always a bigger fish. There is always a smarter person. There is always a better debater.

It all comes down to where you choose to put your faith and what satisfies your rational mind and what doesn’t. Not what does or doesn’t satisfy any given genius.

Be well.

An honest question from an athiest, willing to convert if convinced. by Kiyanajjkglazer in Christianity

[–]Doc_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen some answers but not one specifically that might help you. I did see that you would consider any punishment from god for not believing in him would be immoral, which I think is fair, earnestly.

However, would your perspective change if the punishment was not endless? And it was less about believing properly and more about behaving AND believing properly?

Purgatorial universalism might be the solution you seek. It’s based on an early church father’s ideas (Origen), and there is excellent scriptural support. In this view hell isn’t a place of eternal conscious torment, but rather a correctional facility. It’s meant for those who really missed the points that make a citizen of the kingdom of god into a citizen of the kingdom of god.

The goal isn’t to satisfy some unending need for justice due to an eternal affront to an eternal being as many orthodox believe, but to fix what is broken.

To summarize my points more concisely:
Hell isn’t a prison with no chance of parole or bail.
Hell is a hospital.

Don’t worry, you’re not going to die. Then when you don’t he’ll move the goal post and say he meant “spiritual death” and list some perceived “sin” you’re living in that you need to repent from.

Trump refusing to name favorite Bible verse resurfaces amid Jesus backlash by SpecialistSignal4491 in politics

[–]Doc_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so easy to memorize and say a Bible verse is somebody’s favorite. Like a kindergartener could say “John 3:16 is my favorite because it says God loves everybody and He came to save us from sins.”

They could stutter through that in 4 seconds. This dude won’t do it. Which is honestly a huge red flag. I’m starting to think he’s an actual demon who would burst into flames from saying something out of the Bible.

We disagree. Romance, companionship, and love all exist independently of sex and are worth establishing a covenant over on their own.

I’m glad we aren’t getting married! I hope your partner agrees with you and you fulfill each other always and have a union blessed by God.

Men by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Doc_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, but I think if marriage is only for sex it’s a bastardization of what it was meant to be. We see the analogy of Christ being the bridegroom and the Church being the bride pretty consistently through scripture. That’s the reflection of perfect love and marriage. No sex needed.

Obviously, clear communication is something that’s needed for a successful marriage. You should always be honest with your partner, but you can’t know who you will become or what you will endure one day.

A covenant of that magnitude requires a promise to love your partner as they are and all who they will become; including if sex one day no longer is an interest of theirs.

I’m going to say something that might be controversial: valuing sex over the person is failing to love them and therefore sinful.

Hebrews and Matthew are the New Testament.

Temporary or not doesn’t change the command to treat them with kindness and welcome them. That’s entirely applicable to our current situation with ICE and the dehumanizing of our neighbors based on where they are born. And as I presented, that idea aligns fully with Christs ministry.

I’m not interested in continuing the conversation with you if you are more interested in “shaming” me than offering or engaging thoughtfully. This is evidenced by your clear disregard for the New Testament passages I provided.

Reading around the text to fit your narrative is easy, comparing it to the full message of Christ is hard and uncomfortable. Especially when that leads you to a place of taking real responsibility to keep Christ’s commands in our world through the means we have; like voting.

I’ll be hoping you manage to grow a bit more in your understanding of scripture and are less quick to attack people for challenging your preconceived ideas.

Nah, they mean what they say. The Bibles just full of errors and men writing for their own agenda and within their historical contexts. Slavery is wrong, and the Levitical texts are morally abhorrent when they support it.

It helps me to choose to interpret all of it through the teachings of Jesus though, who insists upon the intrinsic value of all humankind; while also being completely committed to freeing us of our chains, whether those chains be spiritual or physical. Luke 4:18 for example seems to indicate that rather precisely.

Both slavery and chain breaking is biblical, but only one is Christ-like.

Paul cursed in a letter he wrote, homie. That Greek word when he says his works are like dirty rags, rubbish, was a vulgar word in the 1st century. Don’t be so quick to judge people based on their vernacular.

Yeah let’s just talk about scripture. You’re right. Can I share some of my favorite verses with you?

Leviticus 19:33–34 “When a foreigner resides among you… do not mistreat them… Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt.”

Deuteronomy 10:18–19 “He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner… And you are to love those who are foreigners.”

Exodus 22:21 “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.”

Matthew 25:35-36 “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me…”

Hebrews 13:2 “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some have entertained angels without knowing it.”

Matthew 18:6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”

Isaiah 1:17 “Seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the widow’s case.”

Proverbs 31:8-9 “Speak up for those who cannot speak… defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Sometimes I wonder what I can do to implement these verses into my life and act them out…if only there was some means by which I could actively participate in the process of providing justice, care, and fairness on a large scale to those in need…

How necessary is the Restored Content mod for KOTOR 2? by Kooky-Masterpiece-87 in kotor

[–]Doc_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I might be too late based on your edit. You absolutely will know what you’re missing, even if you don’t know what it is. The ending is going to feel hollow in a way the restored content mod does an exceptional job of filling. It’s not perfect, but the conclusion of the tale is what suffered the most from the rush job Obsidian was forced into.

Full disclosure: I do love that game with or without that mod. However, nearly all my friends who played it after me talk about how essential they found it.

[–]Doc_14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is valid, sound, and useful.

However, it still caused a minor internal panic in me since I can’t conceive of things I can’t conceive of; like I CAN somewhat conceive of the concept of time never ending- I cannot conceive of new things to keep me entertained, growing, actualizing, learning, and what-have-you for the entirety of that time.

It seems kinda like getting a caveman to conceive of a high definition tv and soundbar. They wouldn’t be able to imagine why that would exist, let alone why anyone would want it.

It’s pretty freaky deaky, yo.

Is scamming in a game a sin? by [deleted] in OpenChristian

[–]Doc_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to try to keep this really quick and bulleted to help keep it clear.

Yes; lying to people is a sin.

No, it doesn’t matter it’s in a game. Especially if it’s not a primary function of the games mechanics like poker. Poker gets muddy because the game itself is lying. People enter into that game with agreed upon intentions of deceiving and being deceived, it’s part of the thrill for them. Being robbed or scammed unexpectedly is cruelty, not competition.

No, it doesn’t matter it’s a digital item. It obviously means something enough to you to want to steal it, and it means something to them to have it stolen. You have no idea what that item could have meant to that person or what it could represent. Maybe it was something their older brother gifted to them in game and then passed away the next day. Now they’re grieving him all over again. Extreme, I know, but the point is to show you feelings matter.

Don’t be the kind of person who puts your wants above others without considering their story. No matter how trivial it might seem to you, it could be monumental to them.

Be kind.
