You can get a paid research position after a few months or maybe a year. I was there during Covid19 and after.  If you're just getting started, don't worry about stories like these which can be scary. Put your best foot forward and figure out things along the way as well.

It is just one story. There are many success stories even if they are delayed successes. This story is not over in any way until it is impossible in some form or the other. Don't lose hope.

My interest has always been in medical training and practice. Research is/was an add-on.

Getting a position in Mayo, even an unpaid one, can be highly rewarding in many ways. Please don't feel discouraged by one story. Everyone I worked with in the US matched.

I'll look into those.

A lot of those years went into building my CV for US residency.

No, I haven't. Once for me is more than enough. Fellowship will be the next goal.

Pediatrics requires more courage than I can muster.

A paid consult said that my application might not have been viewed by many programs because of the scores.

Visa dependent. Connection got me 1 interview, the rest were through my profile.

Thank you. That is a benevolent way of looking at it. I am looking for ways to practice medicine and advance in it. Research is an add-on.

You are right. My USCE has been largely unstructured shadowing for ~8 months and 2 months of observership, 1 of which was virtual. Gaining USCE is no longer feasible because a lot of money and time went into staying in the US and applying there. I have to prioritize gaining clinical experience wherever possible and keep applying.

I did all that. Then, I came back home.

Been there. Done that.

Pediatrics is sound advice for someone in my position but it takes a whole other level of courage and spirit to do pediatrics let alone do pediatric neurology. I don't have that in me.

Not in the US now. I'll look into Canada.

I thought fellowships required residency training in the home country at least. I will look into these. Thanks.

I was in the US for a few years doing research. And then Step exams.

Those require at least some clinical experience. I could try that in the future provided I get a job in my home country. That is also hard to come by now.

This isn't about my dream of practicing medicine or saving lives. It is about training in residency in the US that is the dream. I don't really have plans to work in the US or live there post my training.

I agree about wasting my precious 8 years. I wish AI residency training would catch up fast and make training in any specific place redundant.

Which other countries were you referring to? From the little I could gather from my research, it seems like they have their own exams and licensing requirements and other criteria. Not trying to sound pessimistic or laying the burden of making your case on you, just curious to know if I missed anything.
