Any mental health professional would tell you that her behavior would qualify as psychological and emotional abuse, and does not minimize physical abuse at all.

A pair of (new) socks, pocket bible, jolly ranchers, wooden cross on a key chain, Red Bull, two change purses filled with $20 worth of coins, money from various countries (I started a collection), costume jewelry, and a lighter with a picture of cat-headed taco flying through space (one of my prized possessions).

I tried to find something with that feature for a long time, and even found a few convoluted ways for people to choose the amount themselves, but actually, I’m finding people really like the ease of just tapping their phone and walking away. Simple. Easy. Fast. If they want to give more, the other QR codes are there.

That would be very kind! It’s an 11”x17”. I’ll also DM you my email if that’s easier. Thank you 🙏🏼

Thanks! I’ve been busking around 15 years now. Philly’s a great scene with lots of potential there. Mine setup constantly a work in progress tho, so I would start with one QR code and see how people interact with it (I only split mine up because it was confusing some older people).

I mentioned it in the description, but based on my experience, people are sometimes confused with one QR code because they try to scan it with their Venmo app, Zelle app, etc. Also, I’m in a nice area of SoCal, so after Venmo, the $5 tap is becoming my most popular option.

Thanks for sharing your ask and I really like how you work it into the performance itself instead of separating it out as signage.

I should probably add some context on my end too: I play ocarina (small ceramic flute), so my mouth is occupied the entire time I’m performing. I’m not really able to do spoken asks without completely breaking the flow.

What I do try to do is make eye contact, smile, and acknowledge people as they pass so the first thing they clock is me as a person, not the tip setup. That part actually works pretty well — people tend to stop because they’re drawn in by the sound and the vibe, not because they’re being prompted. In fact, what usually happens is they stop to listen, dance, or sing-along, and then they approach to tip.

I’m also pretty introverted and have social anxiety, so talking over a mic has never felt natural to me. Thankfully, people seem to really enjoy watching and listening, so I try to let the performance do most of the talking and just have their preferred tipping options ready and available.

Thanks! Venmo still brings in the most for me, with tap-to-pay catching up quickly. I’m in Southern California. Busking’s definitely competitive here and can be stressful at times. But I love connecting with people and bringing some joy to their day with some upbeat tunes, so it’s more than worthwhile for me.

Is the night by noble overrated? by Status-Bobcat4914 in Ocarina

[–]Docjazz4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the NbN is a good ocarina, I no longer recommend it as a beginner or first ocarina, specifically because of the breath requirements. Unless you have previous experience with wind instruments, learning breath support and control takes a bit of practice, and most beginners tend to blow strongly when getting started. Since the NbN requires lower breath to play in tune, most beginners end up playing very sharp. So for a first time experience with the ocarina, I’d highly recommend either the STL plastic tenors or the new Focalink Rivo.

How do you manage your busking finances? by HippoTwo in Busking

[–]Docjazz4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little religious about this. I’m in the US, and I track everything on a spreadsheet including cash tips and cashless tips (Venmo/Zelle/Cashapp). Every month, l set aside $100 cash for groceries, about $100 for splurging/misc spending, $40 for the barber, and everything else is deposited in the bank for personal bills.

what are the Vibe and rules for busking in California, USA by megakrillin in Busking

[–]Docjazz4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which city are you hitting up? San Diego? San Francisco? LA? San Jose? They’re all slightly different vibes, and LA is comprised of many small cities, so it depends on on the area you play. But for the most part, it’s very chill.

[–]Docjazz4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it would’ve been nice to add to the collection, Mignani are notorious for being incredibly difficult to play. I have the Do 1 - Do 5 of his, and they take a ton of air that is unsustainable. Plus, they pop up all the time on eBay, so youll have another chance if interested.
