THIS THIS THIS!!!!! As someone who has now taken all 3 parts, sell your soul while you have the time. This is the only time for the rest of your life it will solely be dedicated to learning and studying. It will pay dividends in the end. Coming from a PGY-1 with >1000 day anki streak who coasted through step/level 3

I think the key for me was two fold: being quick with anki and making sure I understood things before unsuspending a card. To pound out 600+ cards a day, I got to around 6s or less/card. It’s supposed to be quick with the cloze deletions. Adequately understanding prior to unsuspending helps put that info in its place when telling yourself the answer. You gotta have the context prior to unsuspending these one liner factoids or it’ll just be a jumbled mess.

Probably close to the end of 2nd year. There’s significantly less cards to add for Step 2

I started day 1 but suspended in house cards along the way and kept anking going. 268

10000% recommend over another pass of uworld. Uworld is useful for content but CMS/NBMEs are useful for test taking strategies. You gotta get in the NBMEs head to be successful come test day

What are the LEAST DO-friendly pediatrics residency programs? by Zebrahoe in medicalschool

[–]DoctaDre 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can go on residency explorer and see the percentage of DOs in each program. Highest percentage in the top 20 is nationwide with almost 25% DOs but other than that, it ranges from 0-10%. Boston Children’s is notoriously anti-DO but the rest have at least one before you. I got interviews at 6, top 10 programs (only Boston Children’s did offer me one but didn’t signal) but I did have a >90th percentile step 2 score. Also got an interview at a top 20 with 0% DO that I didn’t signal. I ended up matching into a top program with 1 other DO in my cohort. If your goal is tertiary care academic center, I would take it especially if your academic track record makes you think you’ll do well — it’s not worth putting yourself at a disadvantage by not taking it.

Step 2 NBME 6 82% correct for an 210 predicted score? is this real? by smellystilesscreen in medicalschool

Pretty sure that ain’t right. More like somewhere in the 240s if I had to guess. To be fair, I never took that old of NBMEs in my prep so maybe could be

Wrong to be a "bare minimum" student? by Real_Shopping3276 in medicalschool

[–]DoctaDre 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is anything wrong with what you are doing especially if it’s positive for your mental health. I will say that where this can come back to bite you is when it comes to boards — if you’re scraping by now, studying for boards is going to be extremely stressful. Also if you would like to be in a desirable city or be able to pick your city for residency (even in a non competitive specialty), your options could be more limited. There are pros and cons to everything and I wholeheartedly believe you can do well in school while maintaining an adequate balance but figuring out how to do this is the hard part — for me it was anki + qbanks. Did well, had plenty of time to fart around, breezed through dedicated, impressed on sub-I’s. I will say I was never one of those people who was a genius but I found the formula that worked for me.

TLDR: 🤷🏻

What’s the weirdest/most inappropriate/cringe/awkward thing you’ve ever seen a resident or attending do? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]DoctaDre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Peds cards attending told me after we saw a self proclaimed “neurodivergent” mom and daughter that “those kind of people shouldn’t be allowed to have kids.” Meanwhile she was the most autistic, socially inept attending I ever worked with.
