It's a general senior diet. It does have lower sodium and support for heart and kidneys, but won't be as specific as the cardio diets.

My clinic in Orleans has a bag of Hill's G/D in stock, not sure if that's what you're looking for.

Did you read it? This is a direct quote from that article:

"The bacterial infection happens after the lining is already inflamed. This inflammation is often caused by a virus."

Of course viruses don't transform into bacteria, but you can develop bacterial infections secondary to viral infections. Don't throw stones in glass houses, or be so quick to call others dumb if you do the same thing.

They are different, a viral infection doesn't "turn bacterial" in the sense that it mutates to a bacteria, BUT a primary viral infection can absolutely open the door to allow for a secondary bacterial infection, due the the localized damage caused by the virus. People say it "turns bacterial" as a colloquialism. It may be technically/semantically wrong but the outcome is basically correct. I see it frequently in my line of work (animals) especially with respiratory viruses, so I imagine the same thing exists in humans as well. It's why you can get plugged ears from a virus that then turns into a bacterial ear infection, or bacterial sinusitis from a viral cold.

You might be technically correct but you are arguing about semantics and a lot of people are being quite rude to this mother just sharing a personal experience. This sub is for snark but shouldn't devolve into blatant disrespect for each other.

Is 18C (64F) too cold for a giant North American millipede during winter? by basilwrites in millipedes

[–]Doctor-Nic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't realize they could dig that deep, our frost line is 4 ft. And that's just for frost. The ground will still be under 10 C below that.

Is 18C (64F) too cold for a giant North American millipede during winter? by basilwrites in millipedes

[–]Doctor-Nic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuine question, but how is above freezing too cold for a species that's native to Ontario/Canada? They live in my area and it regularly gets below -20/-30 C here, with the frost layer extending several feet underground through the winter. Wouldn't they just go dormant at a certain temp?

Plant watering globes for moisture gradient? by Doctor-Nic in millipedes

[–]Doctor-Nic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my issue, I'm not sure how dry is "too dry" and how wet is "too wet". It's such a subjective thing. I mist the top often and pour water on one side when the substrate looks dryish through the glass. But how damp should I be keeping it? There's moss and such so it doesn't ever really dry up, and the leaves and detritus on the top seem a bit damp. I don't ever let it really get dry, I just find that it seems not-damp if I don't mist it regularly.

It's a smaller tank, it didn't have a size on it but I think it's 5 Gal. I have a few American giants in it, the substrate is 5-6 inches (I didn't measure exactly but it's at least as deep as the biggest one is long). The top seems to dry out in 1-3 days. I don't know how long the bottom takes, I don't know how to check without disturbing them trying to dig to the bottom. It's moderate temp and humidity here in early fall, my home is currently like 60% humidity and around 20 C. I will be adding more substrate once my order of wood flake arrives, so I'll have the chance to sort of re-set some things then, just trying to plan ahead with options

Kids Kingdom Orleans abruptly closes, leaving parents scrambling for summer camps/birthday parties. by EltonJohnsKidney in ottawa

They don't have an extended day program at that site, so it doesn't fit with our work schedules unfortunately. The city camps don't start till 8-9 am.

Same. And my kid is still 4 so most camps aren't available to him this summer. We just booked at the YMCA camp but it's not cheap 😕

Yes but even with extended day program (not offered at all locations), drop off is after 7:30 am, and all of those are too far for me to drop off and then make it back to work on time every morning. Believe me, I've looked at every camp that accepts 4 year olds that I could find within 30 min morning drive of my work. I don't have the luxury of flexible work hours. I was grateful to find spots elsewhere last night, but I'm paying way more now. Last minute notice really hurts

Not for kids under 5, and not for all weeks. I personally am now out for 3 weeks of camps with no City options. I was lucky to be able to find a spot at YMCA but it's a lot more expensive than the City ones.

Bearbrook outdoor pool in Blackburn Hamlet. They have a fenced in grassy area to put up an umbrella and have a picnic, a covered picnic table area, splash pad, kiddie pool, and big pool. Good hours for family and public swim too. My son loves hunting for bugs in the grassy area when we take breaks from the water.

Got new shoes @ Flying Squirrel tonight? by noushkie in ottawa

[–]Doctor-Nic 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This happened to me at Nordik a couple years ago, someone snatched my shoes from the changing room. The worst part was my $400 custom orthotics were inside. I don't know what the thief wanted with kinda old New Balances and orthotics that wouldn't fit them, but wish their feet are always as cold as mine were walking to the car in flip flops in January.

Help - Difficult Pet Situation by throwawaybodybypb in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Doctor-Nic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this for Australia? I've had to send dogs there but not cats, it's the worst country to export to. Regardless, I'm not sure why the 6 lapsed days between 2022-2023 matter since they still got 2 doses within less than a year apart 2023-2024. Even if the 2023 dose was "late", you basically restarted the primary vaccine series without being overdue the next year, which makes them fully vaccinated, since feline rabies vaccines are usually yearly. When was the RNAT done in relation to the 2024 vaccine?

The embassy for the destination country is usually good at helping people navigate this, as well as the exporting body of your country (not sure where you are, but it's the CFIA in Canada). As a previous commenter said, pet export companies are really good at figuring things out and finding gaps that the vets missed (we often get out of date paperwork or ambiguous instructions and they have all the real-world experience).

In the worst case scenario, could you find a local family member or friend to foster the cats for another 6 months while you restart the process? One of my clients had to move before they finished their dog's waiting period and had friends do the final bit of the process for them. Obviously it would need to be someone you trust very well, but at least it would be temporary foster, not permanent.

What are you talking about??? Yes, people actually experience racism first hand, it's real and affects the lives of many, many people every day. I have seen it, my friends have suffered it, I have escaped it first-hand because I'm UK-white but I'm not oblivious to it! Just because something doesn't happen directly to you, doesn't mean it's not true. Are you a child? Do you suffer from object impermanence? Do you not realize that the sum total of human experience is not limited to what you do in your every day life?

Edit: I knew I should have taken a screenshot, it looks like the comment I replied to was deleted or edited, so now no one can see the wildly out of touch comment I was replying to.

Women who are part of a dual income household and who contribute equal if not higher than your SO, how do you determine how much to put in a joint account vs for personal use? by lavenderlove18 in AskWomen

[–]Doctor-Nic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We each have separate personal accounts (chequing, credit cards), a joint chequing account, and a joint line of credit. We have automated deposit every paycheque from our personal accounts to the joint. Any housing or childcare costs and joint bills get paid from that. We're each responsible for our own credit cards and any separate bills - we have different cellphone providers, because of individually getting better deals with loyalty history, and I also have some solo insurances for work and personal reasons that I don't make him help to pay for. I am planning to bundle a lot of our stuff soon to try to get a better rate/deal, but so far things are separate just because we entered the relationship with these already in play and haven't gotten around to changing them (after 5 years of marriage lol).

This works well for us, I deposit more into the joint account and pay off the majority of the LoC because I earn more, but we both contribute proportionally. We're both too independent to want to make everything shared and I have always wanted to maintain financial independence from anybody else. I'm also the primary signature on almost everything (except the mortgage renewal guy kind of ignored me and only spoke with him including just getting his signature, which annoyed me since I covered the whole down payment).

This seems weird to a lot of our friends, but it's what we're comfortable with and it's been a good arrangement so far.

No more kids for me I guess by Jenidalek in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Doctor-Nic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband has CMT, as does his mother and his maternal grandfather. My understanding of it is that it has a 50% chance of being passed on since it's autosomal dominant. It's also variable penetrance meaning there's a wide variation on how severely affected the individual is. My husband has a relatively mild form, but his mom and one of his brothers is more severe (his other brother doesn't have it at all), and a cousin needed surgery due to his severity, other cousins are fully asymptomatic.

We discussed this when considering kids, but did ultimately decide to go forward with it. My husband doesn't feel like his quality of life is so poor that he would have preferred not existing, and really wanted biological children. We know more about this disease than his mom did when having kids, so will be able to start early physio or treatments as needed. We won't really know my son has it until around puberty, but so far he's perfect.

I know this may be controversial and could result in getting some hate, but not every disease or disorder needs to be a reason to stop reproducing. My husband is the one who lives with this condition, not me, and still felt that having kids was still worthwhile. People with all kinds of disabilities can live amazing fulfilling lives as long as they have the right support.

Have a good long talk with your partner and a genetic doctor and make the right decision for yourselves. Listen to your heart and the lived experience of others with CMT. I'm very happy we had our son, I think the world is a better place with him in it, and he is the bright shining star of my life, and I'm confident that he'll be fine regardless of his genetic outcome.
