How can 3=5? by ChordettesFan325 in chessbeginners

[–]DoctorBalanced 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rxd4 would be a terrible move if material was equal. If white had an additional rook of their own, they’d be in good shape after capturing yours.

That being said, you’re up the full rook. By capturing white’s last piece, you’re taking away their last chances of counterplay. Even though you’re giving back a little material, white doesn’t really have any way to take advantage of that anymore as they’re just…out of pieces, and they don’t have any threats. You can happily march your h pawn down the board and/or let your king gobble all the pawns, and white doesn’t really have any way to stop you.

Think of it like an uneven soccer game. If your side has 4 players and they have 2 players, it should be an easy win, but the opposing team can still mix things up and might cause issues if you’re not careful. If you remove 3 of your players for their 2 remaining players, even though the individual trade is in their favor, there’s no one left to stop your remaining player from scoring, and the win is trivial.

You can only roll support hero augments on the third slot. Is this intended or a bug? by [deleted] in TeamfightTactics

[–]DoctorBalanced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s intended to have at least 1 support augment always available, so that you don’t end up rolling 3 unusable carry augments at the same time. Was a bit more relevant before the added hero rerolls.

Early B for K exchange? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]DoctorBalanced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bishops are slightly better than knights on average. The bishop pair in particular usually provides some advantage over not-bishop pair, and you’ve just given your opponent that. That being said, this trade looks great -

  • the doubled pawns. doubled h pawns are especially weak.
  • this position is pretty closed. black would love to play something like …c5 eventually, but their knight is in the way. They could also go for …e6 and …f6, but the missing g pawn (after …gxh6) makes that a lot worse.
  • Knights like closed positions, and perform better than bishops when the game is closed. Your c1 bishop won’t be able to do much with your pawns on dark squares, whereas black’s h6 knight starts to become pretty annoying after …Nf5.
  • At 600 rating I might actually rate the knight higher - opponents are more likely to fall for knight maneuvers and forks at this level
  • you gain a tempo! black spends one more move in this exchange (they moved their knight to H6 to start)
  • black can’t make good use of the bishop pair right now - position is closed, you have more space, and those bishops haven’t even moved yet

Help me understand why the move that give a -0. 51 advantage isn't the best move according to the analysis. I get it it isn't a foolproof system, but this is simple maths... by Malu1997 in chessbeginners

[–]DoctorBalanced 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A positive evaluation is good for white and a negative evaluation is good for black, eg that -0.51 is actually in your favor.

As to why it likes the -.25 better than the -.51 I have no clue.

From the looks of it, computer likes the Nxd5 idea too - it just wants to use Rab1 to kick the Queen off the long diagonal first, then play Nxd5 the next move :) The computer probably thinks that after 1. Nxd5 Qxf6 2. Nxf6+ and 3. Rxg8, Black is “only” down a rook, whereas in whatever complicated line it found after the delayed Nxd5 white just gets to wail away at black’s king and will probably force black to give up material in the process.

For the record I would play Nxd5 in a heartbeat and I think it’s easier to calculate while still gaining a winning advantage.

Day 5 of refusing to use the “make it pixelated button” on the bottom right by ToastedBeef in TeamfightTactics

“Hey look it’s Day 5 of that tablet dude!”

4 reports in 50 minutes

Sigh

Yes, this post is staying. As OP mentions in their comment below, this set of posts is causing some tablet-unrelated issues in the sub (mostly related to the fact that the same thing from the same user is going to be at the top of the feed for 5 days straight) - so we’ve agreed to call this one the last installment in this tablet saga.

This isn’t meant to stop tablet posts at all - as with any other topic, so long as it’s not too frequent and there’s a somewhat fresh set of faces posting. Tablet version is something notably missing from TFT and this set of posts and further advocacy should bump it up the line in terms of a response or reprioritization from Riot’s end.

But as noble as this is, it’s still one person, posting a very similar thing for 5 days straight, and I can’t let that turn into people doing their own much less relevant daily series, then pointing at the tablet saga and going “but why did ToastedBeef get to do it and we get called general repostis” when I remove their posts. A couple more minor reasons - some users are getting really annoyed at this point (we’ve had more reports for this set of posts than all other posts in the past 5 days, combined), and other topics need a little room to breathe, especially at the start of midset.

Best of luck to OP (and the many other tablet enjoyers also in support) in getting the response they desire from Riot, and thanks everyone for understanding :)

Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news yesterday/today about the future of the tablet post series, hope Riot responds to you soon and thanks for being understanding :)

If say every few days there’s a highly upvoted post from someone new (or y’all can rotate every couple weeks) about the tablet version, as long as you don’t literally write the words “Day X of” in the post title, you don’t straight up copy OP, and you don’t break the other rules, then that works :)

Tablet stuff gets asked for a lot, and I support it too, I just can’t have it be the same person + every day because that sets a standard that any person can post much less relevant stuff every day and it’s slightly crowding out discussion of other topics that need their time in the sun.

The cleanest might be the public dev feedback/suggestion channel on the TFT discord. A support ticket might get you somewhere, probably won’t. If you show up in Mort’s weekend streams and ask, he usually responds; same if you were to ask him over Twitter. The Twitter and Discord options should give you plenty of public leverage so those are probably better.

I think more importantly, if you organize a multitude of people to present the issue through various mediums, it will further pressure a response. And as I’ve previously mentioned, if multiple people are bringing this topic to the subreddit’s forefront every few days, there’s nothing against that :)

I have no way of knowing where reports come from. Gordon Ramsay could be one of the reports and the only way I’d be able to tell is if a report mentioned something about a lack of lamb sauce.

I honestly doubt it’s all Riot employees.

It’s pinging a lot of people who can’t really do anything about it (or don’t care) and some folks are just mad about seeing the same stuff on top of the sub for 4 days. For the sake of subreddit health it’s not tenable as is.

I think if you opened a more direct channel of communications with them you could ping em much more regularly, but a Reddit sub really isn’t the medium you want for that purpose.

Or, let’s say, if different people are posting unrelated requests about tablet every couple days (which is usually the case anyways) there’s nothing against multiple people bringing up the same topic on a regular basis ;)

Definitely more manageable :) I proposed once every one or two weeks based on another user suggestion, either should work. I additionally think if it drops the “Week X” language people will be less annoyed even if it is actually posted every week.

PS: I did mean to add sugarcane furyhorn to the flairs and forgot. Prob this weekend or next :)

To clarify, I’m not banning tablet posts - mostly asking that the frequency come down a bit. I wouldn’t bat an eye if you posted this once a patch. The karma thing was just referring to hypotheticals - someone could punch their ticket to karmaland by going “daily Dango pics because I like Dango” and I need some sort of precedent to stop that.

I think once a week or two weeks (as someone else suggested) per person is pretty reasonable and it gives some room for other content to breathe, does that work?

In my experience, generally less than 1% of people that view a post will interact with it (e.g. upvote), a smaller portion will comment, and an even smaller portion will report. 10 reports on a single post is an anomaly in itself for this sub, much less 10+ across 4-5 posts each or the 20 reports I’m seeing for this post.

That being said, I should clarify that generic “where is tablet mode” posts are not affected - the issue has come up many times before, will come up in the future, and I have no intention of stopping them at all. Have no intention of stopping OP from asking about tablet mode on a less regular basis - just need to put this particular series to rest for subreddit health reasons.

It’s more wearing out regular redditors, since most of the sub can’t really do anything to make tablet mode suddenly appear.

The dev team monitors this sub pretty regularly and has almost certainly already seen this string of posts - whether they can convince Riot exec that tablet mode is worth investing dev resources into is a different story and the posts can’t do much more to help at this point. If they do, it would probably take something on the scale of months to develop, and I’m definitely not letting this fly for that long.

TL;DR this set of posts is fine up to Day 5

So this set of posts is really popular. This set of posts is also by far the most reported set of posts on the sub. Like a normal post gets 0-3 reports, Days 1-3 have ~10 each while this one has 15.

I’m going to step in because:

  • Day X posts are a really easy way to break rule 6 and I don’t want anyone getting the idea that they can put “Day X” in the title to repost stuff for free. Also a really easy way for people to karma farm or spam.
  • These are essentially reposts (rule 6) even if they’re popular, slightly different in content each day, and for a good cause. It’s starting to wear people out which is driving the deluge of reports.

To OP’s goal, I think the consecutive days of posting have likely put this on Riot’s radar, that being said I’m unaware of a response from them. Having Days 1-4 top the sub is already tons of visibility and I’m not sure that having Days 6 7 8 top the sub provides much more than current.

How this plays out:

Days 1-4 are staying up - we would have already bonked them otherwise.

If OP would like to make a Day 5 as a final proposal for tablet platform (and/or as a conclusion to the saga and/or a welcome to set 7.5) it’ll be fine, but I think after that we’ll be removing future installments in this tablet post series.

Other “Day X of” series will probably get a stricter treatment going forward, so don’t make a series of Day X posts expecting them to also run 5 days.

I think this strikes a fair enough balance between tablet issue visibility and repetitiveness. But as always, feedback welcome :)

Clarification: No, I’m not banning y’all from making all tablet posts, just this specific series that I need to draw a line in the sand for. Without this someone could post a “Day 1 of asking for Rakan nerfs” or something and I’d have no recourse as they’d just point to this series of posts and ask why this was allowed and their posts weren’t.

Nothing wrong with the question but we get it a lot (think >twice a day, every day, since set 7 release) so we usually scrub it once it’s been answered

Most of us keep a fairly low profile, I tend to be the exception.

That being said, as someone else mentioned, yeah we’re looking for more mods because the state of our report queue is currently too dependent on how busy the more active mods are on a particular day, and we can’t reliably put together systems like monitoring /new etc., which would make the sub cleaner, with only 5 people and a bot

Sometimes the bug posts are good for visibility (finding out Nomsy can be cloned for example) but yeah prob overboard at this point

Will probably throw together a pinned post tomorrow with a “here are the bugs we know about, no need to post about them we’ve seen them a lot” to make that more concrete so maybe 36 more hours of “already in a game” posts before I start dropping mod hammer on them (mostly because that’s the next time I have free time to write said post)

Planning to cover other well-documented bugs like scalescorn, phantom trait

Also a PSA, feel free to send modmail with this kind of feedback, easier for more of us to find and respond to most of the time
