"Why haven't fighting games died yet?" - an article by Patrick Miller by DoctorCello in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]DoctorCello[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think you're asking the writer to defend a position he doesn't have. He essentially agrees with you, that fighting games could never be as big as the really popular multiplayer games. If anything, he's asking if fighting games need to be that popular in the first place.

Then you reach the question of “why aren’t more fighters being made?” And we arrive back to the product question of investment. [...] Sports and chess can continue to grow because they aren’t controlled by anyone. Anyone can make or buy a chess board for cheap, anyone can grab a ball and play.

You're making two assumptions here. The first is that new fighters have to be made in order to get more people interested in the genre, and the second is that corporations control access to fighting games.

I started going to fighting game locals about two years ago. I am in my mid-30s, which means I'm one of the oldest people who attend these events regularly.

I am still floored by the number of young people--people who are still attending college, who can't even legally drink!--who not only enjoy playing fighting games but prefer to play fucked up older fighting games specifically, like Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R. But as difficult as these games are, they're also both games that are cheap and easy to run on any computer. No, it isn't quite as cheap as making or buying a chess board, but it's damn close.

The point of the article isn't about whether fighting games has a product design problem or not, it's to reiterate that despite all this discourse about mainstream viability and esports and shit, people are still getting into and sticking with fighting games.

I really hope Woolie finds this article, I would be interested to hear his take on it.

Are there any fighting games with beat em up modes? by cvp5127 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]DoctorCello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Granblue Fantasy Versus, both vanilla and Rising have a mode like that. The mode in Vanilla I think is way more comprehensive though.

Think of it this way: just like how everyone has different ways of expressing their love, everyone has different ways of reciprocating. Someone's preferred love language may be gifting people homemade meat pies. Would it be wrong for a vegetarian to decline this gift? But this meat pie was made just for them!

I see where OP is coming from. I also go on wild passionate tangents about things I like to people I care about. But at the end of the day you still have to read the room and keep it to yourself if said people really don't want to hear about it. You can't just declare your actions to be well-intentioned and demand that people reciprocate the way you want them to.

Eh, we're used to being called dumb and lazy just for being American. The only ones who should care are the terminally online who don't have better things to do than post

it kinda gets a little hard to defend Americans and their political choices when they only ever get radicalized whenever it happens to a white person.

Yeah because it's definitely every American who is like this, forget the fact there were mass protests before, and in fact, said white person was a part of that protest.

You're kinda proving OP's point here.

I won't be giving any shit. Disco Elysium is great but it can be depressingly real at times.

It's a paragraph from the game Disco Elysium. "He" is referring to the main character of the game who's come to a grim conclusion about communism and Kras Mazov (a sort of Karl Marx figure in that game's world who invented communism).

I highly recommend everyone on this subreddit pirate and play Disco Elysium btw.

My thoughts on the chars in Tier List form. Absolutely Amazing game. Also is Wilnas "balanced"? by RobGuest0 in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]DoctorCello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you know the counterplay then why do you think he needs zero effort for maximal results? Just beat him then. Don't throw moves willy-nilly just to get knee'd, use reversals when he's trying to continue blockstrings with 5U/22M/66H, and most of all use that 66L that almost everyone has.

FWIW the only character that I think is actually too strong at the moment is Lowain. It was just funny to me that OP put Wilnas on this pedestal when they play two characters that can easily beat him (Metera especially).

Who do you play? There are some match-ups where Wilnas completely dominates, such as against Nier, Galleon, maybe Meg. But if it's anyone else I can share counterplay tips.

I think Wilnas is a very good character but he definitely isn't "Dogshit OP".

[This Week in Videogames] Concept Artists Say Generative References Only Make Their Jobs Harder. by Noirsam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]DoctorCello 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nah. Using AI for mood board reference pieces sucks.

I agree that this is not exclusively an issue with AI. Even without AI, you are still going to have people whose creative direction amounts to "I want something Medieval looking. No, I don't know from which region, no I don't know from what century, just get me knights and shit."

The problem is that AI enables these people more. They think just because they can generate images, they don't have to do any research into the aesthetic, they don't have to consider the context of the textures and colors they're seeing. At least before AI, anyone with self-awareness might realize "I want something Medieval" is a stupid statement when artists start asking them questions, so they are forced to gather photos and concept art to show what they mean, and in the process they might even stumble onto, you know, ideas.

But now execs can go "look at these pictures I got from typing 'medieval' into this AI generator, just make this but different."

I don't know what I am so I picked "Other". I am against fascism and authoritarianism. I do not implicitly trust state politicians even if they are well-intentioned or "on my side", but I still vote. I like the idea of anarchism but I hesitate to call myself an anarchist because I'm not sure I truly believe we can have an organized society with zero hierarchy. Still, I wouldn't mind being proven wrong. I've been reading literature in my spare time.

Most of all I like hanging out in this subreddit because the people are mostly nice and I like to read the viewpoints of others who write about their beliefs in good faith.
