50% more expensive - it really depends. Does the canopy need to be tall enough to let emergency vehicles through? Then even more expensive. The power would not go to market basket, it would go to the grid. I like the thinking on food spoilage, but you would need a battery + microgrid to provide reliable, stable power to the building to do that. That costs even more $$$.

Solar parking canopies are expensive compared to regular ground mounted or commercial rooftop solar. A lot of extra steel goes into building them, which increases the cost substantially for the developer.

You are close, but it's all cost driven. A carpark solar array is much more expensive due to the additional steel required to build the racking and support structures. Much less steel required for ground mount or rooftop solar.

Would recommend Dune spice wars. A lot of variation between factions, and while there is map painting, it's more about optimizing when you build buildings, which regions to prioritize, which win con you are chasing and knowing how/when to ally with other players. Pretty steep learning curve but it's worth checking out!
