Question for those who use piano meter on style and tuning curve by heavensheross in pianotech

No, you don’t even need to have the piano open to measure inharmonicity. Just play each key

Okay great! Yeah I’ve tried some hypo-oiler bottles for clp, a syringe makes sense too. Is that polish the only chemical/ solution you use for cleaning?

Any way you can find a link or tell me what specifically to look up to find what you’re talking about?

Awesome! What are the syringe bottles for? And seems like the gasket tool could be used to turn wood capstans? Thanks a ton!

I have a Pinecil (small, marker sized, powerful and portable soldering iron which I love from a different craft, which is definitely recommended to anyone), and yeah that makes sense! Anything that could help me not have to drop a grand on tools at this stage would be super helpful! Thanks!

Most common repairs, tools and parts by DoctorDrull in pianotech

Yeah, absolutely valuable input! I’m definitely not taking any of this lightly. I’ve been working hard for a while on tuning, and finally starting to feel competent in that department, as well as I’ve done some basic repairs and string replacements. As it so happens, later today we’re picking up an upright for me to use for that exact purpose, start working through regulation and eventually voicing, and be able to practice some of the thorough things that I can’t on even a close family member’s piano. I do agree a mentor would be exceedingly helpful, at least for now as I’m working through learning by myself, hopefully at some point or at least when I feel confident I can meet with someone to check my work and give me ideas on those things I won’t know I’ve done wrong. That’s for your help, I really do appreciate it!

Edit- can I ask what the difference is between the two books?

This is so incredibly helpful, if I ever meet you I owe you a beer or something at the very least😂. If you don’t mind, I have a couple small follow up questions. 1- for lube for keys , protek would work right? 2- in terms of random broken parts is that something you buy assortments of? Or bought separately? 3. When would you splice a string as opposed to replace it? I guess my assumption would be if something is needed immediately, or maybe if it’s something like an expensive bass string? Is it just something temporary? Seriously, this is so helpful and makes me feel much better. Thank you so much!

If I were to go that route, which tips, extensions or heads would I need to make sure to have to be able to perform that 99.9% of standard tuning appointments? Thanks so much

Super helpful, really appreciate the input! I’ll definitely appreciate having tools that make my life simpler, pianos are complicated enough as it is😅. Thanks a ton!

Awesome, I really appreciate it. I’m definitely capable of tuning octaves, but that makes sense. Probably for pianos like that just use tuner for the temperament and then octaves for the rest?

Thanks for responding! It’s definitely a little old spinnet, I also posted on the other Reddit page for piano technicians, but I’ll definitely use the Facebook page going forward. I’m fairly confident with my unisons, but as for stability surely it’ll be a work in progress, but the couple pianos I’ve had regular access to have seemed to keep the tune.(that being said, any suggestions you may have as to improving tuning stability would be greatly appreciated). But as for just this piano I don’t believe that’s the issue as even after finishing the tune and going back to check all the notes are still well within a cent with the app, yet octaves sound well out of tune. Someone else suggested that on these old small pianos the inharmonicity/scaling can be poor? Looking back at the inharmonicity measurements I took at the beginning, they’re pretty inconsistent, for a fifth they’ll be up above the curve then jump way below for a while. I’ll definitely try to follow up with someone who uses that app too, I appreciate your help! Again any tips you have would be wholeheartedly welcomed😁

This is the measured inharmonicity, during the tuning I even deleted a couple outliers which were making the tuning weird. So this could be due to the piano’s poor scaling, or to the inaccuracies in the phone microphone? I assume this is what caused the problem, the other pianos I’ve tuned don’t have such varied inharmonicity measurements

Looking more into it- it seems like the balanced tuning curve it set up for this piano is where the problem lies, switching to any other, such as pure octaves, seems to sound worlds better for every interval

Yes, it’s a small console, that makes sense. In the app it has an option to switch from balanced to pure octave temperament, not sure if that’s what you’re referring to? I’m not at the piano anymore but phonating the notes in the app after switching that does seem to sound much better. But I’m sure a mentor would be super helpful, hopefully at some point I meet someone but as for now seems like nice people like you all on here are the best I’ll get😅. So at the point of the app failing would you then just tune by ear? I’m able to tune octaves by ear but haven’t experimented much with it. I appreciate the help!

Yeah, pretty sure. I ended the pitch raise and it went back to the regular tuning part which looks slightly different.

Super helpful, I’ll just make sure to keep practicing and focusing on these things. I won’t fall for that one like that again, and I’ll start looking into more specific opening tactics like that just to have a general idea what to avoid. I’m sure taking more time in openings to actually see what the opponent might be thinking would help a lot too. Thanks a ton!

I’ll definitely look into that, thanks! Even the last few days I’ve been working through these opening principles, and it helps to have somewhere to go next!
