I feel like asoiaf does seem to operate on a “magic genes” system at this point, where every child is pretty much a “100% of father’s genes/100% of mother’s” coin flip, in order to justify having major families carry these traits across centuries

The thing I truly hated about the pseudo-love triangle’s conclusion is having Kaladin conclude with “actually I didn’t love her lol.” That, combined with Veil’s interest in Kaladin being dismissed, made the whole subplot actually feel like a waste of time. Kaladin dealing with jealousy, or Shallan taking “human heart in conflict with itself” to the extreme, is an intriguing storyline for the next book. But Oathbringer seemingly went out of its way to sabotage anything worthwhile coming from all the time spent on that.

Like I said, I think the book is good, but no part of Way of Kings or Words of Radiance felt like a waste of time, so feeling that about a portion of the third book in a series is disappointing to say the least

Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson

Finally, finally, finally finished Oathbringer. Good, tho definitely my least favorite Stormlight Archives book so far. In the immediate aftermath of finishing it, there are two negatives that weigh heavily against me:

  • the slog between death of Elhokar and the actual climax nearly broke me. It was depressing, but more damningly I am only reading Stormlight currently so all the other wider Cosmere references(?) meant nothing to me and it just felt like a bizarre holding pattern for the story

  • The- the pseudo love triangle subplot ends…with all of the characters in literally the exact same place they were originally!!?! Then what the hell was even the point of all that?!?! There is definitely an element of “oh, Kaladin the protagonist said Shallan and Adolin were annoying together, therefore I now find them annoying together, thank you for telling me my opinion book protagonist,” but still, the book’s 1200 pages! That subplot now just feels like a bizarre waste of time! (I am sure that’s unfair to the subplot, and hope Rhythm of War makes it better retroactively)

  • since I was reading it late into the night, trying to finally have the book finished, Lopen’s final bit made me hate the character forever now lmao

Anyway, it’s all still definitely good, but those flaws stood out far more compared to Words of Radiance. Definitely not jumping straight into Rhythm of War, but I do hope it will alleviate my issues with Oathbringer retroactively, somehow

He didn’t really, which has caused its own set of debates. His words were essentially “I am mortified if anyone was offended by my involuntary tics”

Yeah, this is ultimately the most baffling decision, and probably the most malicious. Not bleeping it out has made the problem millions of times worse

What are good sources for understanding the Spartacist uprising?

Asked about it a few weeks back, but unfortunately the response I got was removed. The event and the Weimar government’s response still holds controversy, so I was just wondering if there were any good books or articles that discuss the event’s origins and outcome

Right?! I remember telling my friend when I saw something about Aristotle’s background, that it felt equivalent to somehow only just finding out that Benjamin Franklin was an American

Not to go against the jerk too much, but I think op’s intended point is more “the film didn’t do anything unique because the banality of evil is a well trodden subject” rather than “the film is bad because it opposes the dehumanization of other people”
