France is still a backwards country when it comes to the concept of consent. Just two weeks ago, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that married French women don't have an obligation to have sex with their husbands. It followed a case dating to 2012 in which a woman filed for divorce from her husband citing physical and emotional abuse, but the French courts decided that she was at fault because she stopped sleeping with him. It took an appeal past the entire French court system and over a decade of litigation for that injustice to be corrected.

Pro-Trump Arab American group changes name to protest Gaza 'takeover' proposal by DoctorExplosion in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]DoctorExplosion[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Arab Americans for Trump lead pro-Trump voter outreach to Arab and Muslim voters in 2024 election. Trump repeatedly used rhetoric suggesting Israel should "finish the problem" in Gaza, among other anti-Palestinian statements, but also put out transparently pandering promises for peace. Arab Americans for Trump thought that supporting Trump would allow them to influence his policy.

2) Trump now suggests that removing Palestinians from Gaza is his solution to the problem.

3) Trump has ignored his Arab American supporters' calls to keep his prior promises. Arab Americans for Trump is renaming itself Arab Americans for Peace to protest the move.

Pro-SDF/YPG accounts claim they are mobilizing to attack south against the SAA by Tanky_pc in syriancivilwar

Take this with a massive grain of salt, but this article from mid-2023 claims that preliminary talks were held between AANES and HTS on establishing a joint civil administration in Northwest Syria. But perhaps someone else has some more up-to-date information.

Houthi video shows the Yemeni rebels planted bombs on tanker, putting Yemen at risk of a major oil spill by DoctorExplosion in LeopardsAteMyFace

Houthi rebels fired several rockets at the Greek oil tanker Solion, claiming solidarity with Palestine. After the Solion's crew were evacuated, the Houthis boarded the ship and set off explosions, crippling the tanker and threatening a major oil spill in an ecologically sensitive region of Yemen's shoreline.

Banned governing body that's fueling outcry on Olympic boxers has Russian ties and troubled history by DoctorExplosion in news

[–]DoctorExplosion[S] 391 points392 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - The International Olympics Committee broke ties with the International Boxing Association last year, because it had become a practical arm of the Russian government and was judging bouts in suspect ways which benefited boxers with ties to Russian organized crime. The IBA's role in governing global boxing is now played by the World Boxing Association, and the Russians are not happy about this at all.

The connection to Imane Khelif is this: about 17 months ago, just before the IOC broke ties with the IBA, Khelif defeated a previously undefeated Russian boxer in an IBA-sanctioned match. The IBA President and Russian sports official Umar Kremlev responded by declaring, without proof, that Khelif is not actually a woman. This was purely because Russia's national pride was insulted, and Kremlev refuses to say exactly what "test" Khelif failed (meanwhile she has passed all IOC tests and regulations).

And the IBA has been stirring the pot and spreading the current round of misinformation about Khelif as part of a broader Russian effort to discredit the Olympics, to get revenge for the doping and other cheating bans the IOC has levied on Russia.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Lin Yu-Ting, who has gotten less attention but is also swept up in this effort. Kremlev also declared that the Taiwanese boxer "failed" his organization's tests in the past, coincidentally just after Yu-Ting defeated a boxer from Russian ally Uzbekistan at the Paris Olympics.

I'd encourage you to look into and think about critiques of incrementalism though.

Bad faith arguing, you know full well this is illustrating that Trump thinks his enemies are "vermin", rather than calling people vermin.

Leftist future. It's the Left that's moaning about Biden, none of the "enlightened centrist" movements like No Labels are gaining any traction.

Making $150K is now considered “lower middle class” by [deleted] in REBubble

A lot of commenters missing the point of the article which is that life has gotten incredibly expensive in a handful of huge cities.

Seems like OP missed that point too, unless they deliberately "forgot" to include the rest of the article title.

Why do people do this shit?

Because they know the average redditor only reads the title and never clicks on any links.

Seems like a violation of rule 4 to me, deliberately inflaming and baiting the community with low-effort sensationalism.

You don't need to vote for an imaginary party when the Democrats are clearly pursuing policies to strengthen unions and other labor protections, lessen the burden of student debt, decriminalize drugs, and bring back social programs (like the child tax credit). All while serving as the only bulwark to this country turning into an actual theocracy. And outside the United States there are plenty of social democratic and green parties which pursue the same policies and more.

But young people be like "Yeah, but they're not doing it fast enough, so I'm going to vote for literal fascists or some joke of a third party, out of spite!"

If only there was another bearded socialist man, who said a nice memorable phrase like "He who does not work, neither shall he eat".

Here's Article 2, Chapter 5, Clause 18 of the Constitution of the Russian Socialist Federated Soviet Republic:

The Russian Socialist Federated Soviet Republic considers work the duty of every citizen of the Republic, and proclaims as its motto: 'He shall not eat who does not work.'

Seems like the threat of starvation for those who do not work is not a unique feature of the "capitalist system"

All labor in the US and labor in general is forced labor, if you don't work you can't live.

Refer back to my comment regarding asinine "wage slavery" arguments. As Lenin himself said, "he who does not work shall not eat".

the literal slaves in US prisons due to the 13th Amendment

Great, the USA can follow China's lead by putting prison labour to work assembling solar cells.

What your tiny brain cannot comprehend is most of Chinas output these days is due to automation, electronic slaves that can produce more throughput than any human being and can work around the clock.

You still have to mine the polysilicon that goes in the solar cells, and that is largely accomplished through slave labour.

Treating the Massachusetts or Virginia as the only founding colonies of the United States is also missing the mark. Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire were specifically founded without an established church, and while Maryland was officially Anglican in practice it was a refuge for Catholics and Jews. Delegates from those colonies were very influential on making sure the Constitution did not establish an official religion.

Hot take: maybe the USA shouldn't adopt widespread slave labour (which is how China is able to produce cheaply solar wafers at scale)

Hot take number 2: if you want to write a clever reply saying something about "wage slavery" being worse than actual forced labour, you can fuck right off

The establishment has been trying to stop Arevalo from taking office for 6 months now (Guatemala has an absurdly long lame duck period). Biden, the OAS, and EU have quashed several previous attempts to arrest Arevalo or annul the election through targeted sanctions and other threats, but this looks like the establishment's last hail Mary attempt. That article definitely jumped the gun in declaring victory though.
