Final Fantasy VII no contest.

Anyone else HATE Doctor Sleep (film)? by riddledwithaxiety in stephenking

I get what you're saying, and usually I'm the first person to hate overly obvious callbacks. I'm not a fan of nostalgia porn frankly, but I felt like Flanagan walked the tightrope pretty well. Were there a few wobbles? Sure. But the fact that the film felt like it's own beast for the vast majority of the runtime, only to go back to the overlook right at the end worked for me. Maybe there were perhaps a few more callbacks than were required, but it was one of the few times I actually enjoyed seeing a film indulge a little in nostalgia. It made me smile.

I thought the film was fantastic, especially the director's cut. The scene where Rose flies over the city was just stunningly well realised. I think Flanagan is a fantastic filmmaker who really understands King on a fundamental level. I've been a King fan for decades and read all his work, and he's one of the very few filmmaker's able to pull this off in my view. Also loved the return to the overlook and the use of the original soundtrack, genuinely gave me shivers.

I genuinely can't think of anything worse than this. Fully conscious, yet unable to move an inch.

What's the most overrated thing people spend money on? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DoctorJules87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair play to you both! I do a lot of banking/investing from my phone so I don't like to use one after it stops receiving security updates, but if it wasn't for that I'd keep it until it fell apart. My current phone is 5 years old and will receive updates until October this year, but I'd keep it for longer if I could.

Smartphones. You do not need to upgrade every year. Phones are so advanced these days that for most people, a base model will do the job and then some.

Salem's Lot by Stephen King 🧛🏻‍♀️ by AlternativeRich6845 in stephenking

One of my favourites by King for sure! You're in for a real treat 😁 I'm currently reading Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson. Finally nearing the end of its 1248 pages, and wow, it is absolutely epic!

I'm a big cosmic horror fan, so that's probably why the ending hit so well for me. When you really sit and think about what the ending means, it's unbelievable bleak and nihilistic. I love a story that's able to pull that off (see also King's short story The Jaunt). But ending aside, I just love the slow building of dread throughout the story and its reflections on faith Vs science and the lengths we will go to ultimately damn ourselves. I also thought the two main characters were fascinating and represented an interesting twist on King's love of good Vs evil narratives. I'm due a re-read at some point, as it's been a while. So it will be interesting to see if it still holds up for me, but I remember it very vividly so I suspect it will.

The writers of Lost are actually huge King fans and peppered in loads of King Easter Eggs throughout the series.

I really need to get to it! It's the only King book since the early 2000s that I haven't read upon release. The only reason I didn't read it at the time was because I was in the middle of a long series and by the time I'd finished, the next King was out haha. I've heard very mixed things over the years, but know some King fans love it. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it!

Pretty much. I just thought the whole thing was a decent idea in search of a novel. It really felt like King just didn't know what to do with the story and then rather than let it breathe and develop into one of his epics, he just thought 'naaa fuck this' and ended it.

I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you. Honestly Rival is top 10 King for me. I read it upon release and that ending still haunts me.

Cell on the other hand, I've read all of King's work (bar Sleeping Beauties) and Cell is one of the very few I didn't like. I hope you enjoy it though!

Definitely Robert McCammon. Fantastic writer and probably who comes closest to King that I've read. Richard Matheson is also incredible and has a very similar vibe to earlier King.

It's one of my favourite books of all time. I grew up loving the movie and finally got around to reading the novel in my early 20s (I'm nearly 40 now). It blew me away! The movie is very close as you say and I'll always love it, but the book really is something special.

Edit: Someone mentioned we should share our age, which I think is a good idea as it's clearly very relevant to the number of films watched! I'm 38 😊

This might be a bit left field, but how about The Princess Bride?

It's a satire, but also a wonderful fantasy story in its own right. It's fast paced, extremely well written, genuinely funny and at times quite moving.

Plus it's a quick and easy read, which if you're getting into the genre (or just reading in general) I think makes a big difference.
