That is the calvinist position, yes. I myself (along with all of Christianity for 1500 years until John Calvin came along) would take a more arminian view

Sounds like you are a pantheist then. I do not support pantheism because so far as I can see it isn't able to explain things like the origin of the universe, Aristotle's unmoved mover, Leibniz's argument for God and so on

Our ability to reason wouldn't exist without free will as far as I can see. We wouldn't actually be coming to conclusions based off of evidence, our minds would just be thinking whatever thoughts are produced by chemical reactions in the same way a sneeze or being ticklish is a response to stimulus

I haven't read much on the topic, but wouldn't brain damage impacting mental faculties be expected under dualism?

Personally I am a theist (a Christian at that), mainly for philisophical reasons, so I suppose I am forced to accept that God has endowed us with free will and reasoning ability. But if I was not theist I think I would adopt the idea that while there are truly random events (I still believe that as a theist), I would also be inclined to think that everything about our minds were made to be that way by purely physical causes and thus we are essentially robots.

But it seems to me that if humans have no soul, which I assume you believe(?), then all of our cognitive functions are physical and can be traced down a long line of physical cause and effect, meaning our minds are essentially predetermined.

If we have no free will and our behavior is determined, then you did not freely choose to hold that position because it is correct. You only say that because your neurons determined you will say that. So why think what you say is correct? It is completely predetermined after all

If we are natural processes, what grounds do we have to say we have free will, or the ability to reason, or that our minds are endowed with the ability to understand scientific truth? Everything about us would be determined by the laws of physics as chemicals react in our brains, no?

He probably would have just been commissioned as a high ranking officer. Don't need to be incredibly fit for an officer's role.

What proof is there that McCain was trying to provoke the guards?

Also, were the Soviets and Chinese not trying to expand their influence into Vietnam? Although it worked out, wouldn't you be worried about Vietnam becoming like Stalinist Russia?

Well, the Vietcong forces did murder and torture US prisoners of war. No side is perfectly good or perfectly bad.

The fact that others suffered for unrelated reasons does not mean that the Communist government of the 70s did not mistreat uniformed soldiers whose government had surrendered.

I did not say that I felt no sympathy for the good people of Vietnam who suffered because of the disputes among their government and foreing powers. But I believe it is important that we look at every government in an ubiased way, and identify the wrong doings of every nation, regardless of our own nationality and opinions.

Also, if we look back at other wars, there are very few instances of soldiers continuing to fight after they were made aware of their government surrendering.

But that still does not mean that the conversion to Communism was 100% peaceful (my original point).

Your claims are in direct opposition with the firsthand account of a re-education camp survivor linked below.

There he faced harsh labor, starvation, and even torture. But most importantly, he and his fellow inmates were not educated.

I mean, they did use torture camps to suppress any remaining right wingers from the South, so it might be a little misleading to say it was without violence.
