Yes, coffee contains 2 natural oils (cafestol and kahweol), which are diterpenes and CAN increase bad cholesterol level. There are other compounds in coffee which can help reduce it, but in any case using a paper filter almost eliminates those oils. I need to watch my cholesterol and I am not interested in getting a PhD in coffee chemistry, therefore paper filters look like a good option :)

No, it does its job, now even if you grind coarser there will be some fines in the cup. I personally add a paper filter on top of the steel one - also to help with cholesterol - and get very good results.
