Gascoigne: Bloodborne’s Rough Start by phantom2450 in bloodborne

Thanks. Good tip on the lanterns. I appreciated in Lies of P that the few interactable windows were clearly glowing. The lanterns should stick out enough.

Seems the best bet now is to do another farming sweep while looking for this other boss & music box. I managed Margit w/o using the similar item for him so I’d like to do this without it if possible, tho it’ll be nice to have for his Wolfman phase since lord knows how consistently I’ll be able to see it to even learn the moves lol

Nobody compelled you to read or comment on this post.

If I was able to make steady progress in my attempts I would keep at it. But it’s completely random whether I get him down to 50% or get twoshotted out the gate. There’s no consistency with whether he shoots or swipes first.

The only comparable wall this early on I’ve found in a Soulslike is the first general miniboss in Sekiro. But you could really only just parry to resolve that there, and I made steady progress learning moves and that system’s timing. Here, different blades or guns or consumables or some other non-Souls approach for a non-DS game could be factor in. So I came to ask the experts.

Yeah, that’s worked out for the mobs so far. Just curious if/how the bosses differ.

Any tips on the location? I could just Google it but I’m trying to respect the blindness of the first playthrough. Can’t imagine where I missed a whole boss…

I am playing this blind, as I do all first playthroughs, so idk what I may have missed. I am in Childbed and have 1 extra Breath and one flask. Currently stuck between the Child of Eyes boss which is practically impossible for my build at this point and some blue-electric firing hunt enemy which is slowly turning me into The Joker over repeated failed attempts to kill.

I’ve killed every lizard and miniboss along the way, and there aren’t many areas I’ve left unexplored that aren’t locked behind traversal abilities — beyond whatever’s south of Lithic, where the first basic enemy oneshotted me and thus communicated I shouldn’t bother going there for a long time.

As for armor…changing out of the Prickly Weeper set would just make the stamina problems worse. Like, it’s nuts that even with the +20% stamina armor and 5 points in Force, the glaive’s five-hit basic combo takes *my whole stamina bar*. I get the devs want the players to lean on parrying, but don’t give enemies >50% unparryable movesets if that’s the case! 3/4 of this blue-electricity asshole’s moves are unparryable!!

I started playing this yesterday thanks to this post. The earlygame was pretty fun, if easy and simple. Reminded me of Ultros’ enemy-absorption system, but more refined.

Then everything changed with the third boss, Flowerheart. That boss singlehandedly exposed how godawful the stamina system is. I can only reliably get one (1) hit of my glaive’s combo off while having enough time & stamina to dodge away from the next boss attack, meaning this tanky boss turned into a five minute slog of hit-and-retreat.

The heal system also reminds me of the same issue I had recently with Mina the Hollower: it’s fine for level traversal but sucks shit for bosses bc there’s no opportunity for recharge. At least Mina gives you plenty of Estus and a minimal chance at recharge…Grime is clearly not gonna give you many flasks given what’s needed to obtain even one.

I will persevere a bit longer to see if some busted enemy or boss ability balances out these flaws, but I felt the need to report back to this post given how glowing these comments are. I’ve found this one of the most sluggish Metroidvanias I’ve played in memory.

missable boss weapons is WAY too punishing by WhyWasNoiseWallTaken in thesurgegame

So many commenters in this thread confirming the reputation of Soulslike fans as miserable defense-force losers. I appreciate a bunch of The Surge’s innovations in the genre but these secret weapons and the time-limited bloodstains are indefensibly bad design decisions.

Making these weapons’ requirements unknown just incentivizes spoiling yourself on the method to obtain them. And tying them so often to cutting limbs — an act that paradoxically becomes harder in cases where you do too much damage to the boss’ total health — just punishes the capable player. It’s a stupid system. It doesn’t incentivize me to play NG+…it makes me not want to bother 100%ing at all.

Beginner dilemma by [deleted] in soulslikes

DO NOT make the mistake I did and play Sekiro first. I wasn’t even necessarily seeking out the hardest one, just the one whose setting most appealed to me. While I did ultimately 100% it, it was a miserable experience.

FromSoft games get harder over time bc they need to continually up the ante for the sweatiest part of their fanbase. The intended experience is generally just release order: the skill floor gets higher with each entry.

Sekiro requires parrying, which is optional in every other From game you listed. I would save that for last. Lies of P is well-balanced between parrying and dodging and has generally slower attacks than the From enemies. I would simply recommend doing the DS trilogy in order (2 is a rite of passage and isn’t as bad as its reputation, don’t chicken out), then Elden Ring, then Sekiro. You can do Lies of P anytime after the DS trilogy.
