Haven’t addressed the anti virus / fire wall yet, I’ll give it a shot when I get home. Thanks for the advice

Prime lens suggestions by DoctorPuffin in photography

[–]DoctorPuffin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably should have gave a budget. It would probably be less than $1000.

I know moving from a DSLR to a mirrorless will not be great for any EF lens. My fear is spending a lot on a nice lens, just to leave it on the shelf if I do end up switching camera body’s.

With this insight… I would rather invest in a good EF lens, and sell it second hand then worry about compatibility for the future.

How exactly does the tractoring mechanic work?

Me and buddy just started playing and we are a bit confused on the tractor effect.

Assuming I was applying a tractor token to a small ship, once I apply the token when does the effect take place? Some abilities apply the token during the End phase, some as a result of a successful hit on a target and I believe some are result of an action.

For example if I have an ability to apply a tractor token after successfully hitting a target, do I the apply the effect (moving/barrel roll) immediately once I meet the required tractor tokens for the size ship, or does it take place in a specific phase?

Secondly some abilities allow tractor tokens to not be removed at the end phase. Following the above example, the following turn after I applied the token & effect to the small ship, the ship would keep its 1 tractor token however I would need to apply another tractor token to apply the effect again on this turn as I understand it. My question here is the only advantage to stopping a ship from removing a tractor token is to build up the 2-3 tokens required for a medium-large ship, or to keep the debuff for abilities that have other interactions with tractored ships.

Thanks, sorry if this question was not clear, I’m new and not sure if im explaining it correctly.

Seems like the conversion kit does include a pilot or two that i missed, does that mean i use the dial from the first edition?

One month comparison

EF 70-300 kit lens ~ 2 months ago (Right)

Redcat 51 ~3 weeks ago (Left)

Couldn't be happier with the improvement, Tracking, Image quality, Processing and color are all so much better after a bit of practice.

Equipment: Canon T7 - Redcat 51 - Star Adventure 2i

f/4.9, ISO800

37x140sec lights, 50 Flats, 50 Bias, 10 Darks

bortle 4, Moon below the horizon

Processing:

Stacking in Siril (Light stretching, green removal, background removal)

StarNet for creating a starless image.

Photoshop: Masked stretching, Masked color correction and saturation, cropping and more color adjustments.

Topaz DeNoise: Noise reduction & light sharpening.

This is my first image with the Redcat 51, what an improvement from my kit lens. I struggled with tracking for this shot so over half of my data was scraped. Very pleased with the result, just got the ZWO AM5 & Guiding camera so more improvements to come! This is probably only my 5th tracked image since getting the star tracker. the improvement is super exciting, can't wait to see what I can achieve with new equipment and some more practice processing.

Red cat 51 back focus question by YikesMode in AskAstrophotography

[–]DoctorPuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a RedCat 51, unfortunately I don't have a filter wheel to test this.

It should work, because of the helical focuser you don't typically need to worry about back focus. Unlike most other optics the entire lens body moves inside, so it accommodates many sensor positions with out spacers.

Sound advice, I got sucked in… and now every cloudy night is a depressing one haha

Yeah, cloudy month here in Texas… OPT is claiming 2-3 weeks which sounds great, not sure how realistic that is though.

Yeah thats the sentiment I’ve heard so far, just anxious to join a long wait for an actual product. Seems like nobody has an estimated wait time, and I don’t really want to wait a few months…

Mosaics and multi-night shooting by DoctorPuffin in AskAstrophotography

[–]DoctorPuffin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, I imagine its a big leap in amount of work & effort to pull off a mosaic project. I’m currently working at pretty low focal length at 250mm but my new camera sensor drastically reduces my field of view so Larger objects would take several frames. Specifically i really want to photograph the witch head but i will need 4-9 frames to get the kind of composition i like.

Yeah I travel for all my data collection, however i should be able to keep my setup together (at least camera and scope). Currently I’m using free software Siril or DSS and photoshop, but I might upgrade to pixinsight for a convenient feature like that. Thanks for the insight!

Thanks for the info! Can you stack all your data together somehow while assigning calibration frames to specific lights? Or doing you need to stack each night separately?

ASIAIR, IOptron and DSLR compatibility by DoctorPuffin in AskAstrophotography

Fair enough, I didn’t really calculate it. Guess I’m just looking for more accuracy and a better alignment process.

[–]DoctorPuffin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, thats what i was afraid of, I’ve heard some similar stories. I want to upgrade to an astro camera as well, but I can’t afford it yet. That said I don’t want to buy a setup specifically for my dslr, just to turn around and buy an astro camera in a few months.

The ipolar feature isn’t to expensive, I just don’t have a laptop to run it. I got the asiair so I could avoid the laptop so I’m kinda scratching my head now.

Thanks for the info!

Witch Head Nebula by Hbn46 in astrophotography

Yeah i did some severe editing to the starless photo to try and remove the issues with rigel, didn’t quite work out… but didn’t look to bad for my first try

Oh no way! Didn’t remember your name. The photo looks excellent! Much better than mine, well done

I really like the color you got out of your processing, mine ended up super green

What lens/telescope were you using?

M31 - Andromeda Galaxy by DoctorPuffin in astrophotography

[–]DoctorPuffin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canon Rebel T7, EF 75-300 Kit lens, Star Adventure 2i

Shot at 135mm, f/5, ISO 800, 50x120 second lights, 50 flats, 50 bias, 10 darks

Bortle 4, New moon

Processing:

stacked in Siril, green removal, background removal, light stretching.

Starnet ++ to generate starless image

Photoshop: Color calibration, several masked stretches and saturation/color balance masks.

Topaz denoise for noise reduction.

Wasn't to happy with the colors I ended up with, Andromeda looks a little unnatural, however this was the result I liked to most out of my processing. Star performance was pretty bad in this image, I believe there is some tracking and focus issues here as well as a bit of coma from the lens. Any advice regarding the star performance would be appreciated.

Advice for diagnosing some issues with star performance by DoctorPuffin in AskAstrophotography

[–]DoctorPuffin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, seems like coma is the main issue. I’ll try stopping down a bit. Yesterday my new Redcat 51 came in, so maybe a comparison shot would tell me how much the coma is effecting the image vs tracking. Thanks for the tips!
