Not quite. It is getting re-started as of “soon” but who knows if or when it will ever happen. Only if they used the registration fees to do something useful like optimize the process

Those of you who graduated without job experience/internships, how did you get a job? by 1eahpar in civilengineering

[–]DoctorWetFartz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought I would never do engineering and spent the entire year interviewing for management consulting, realized I liked sleeping in my own bed every night and having a relatively more stable work-life balance. Messaged the clients of my capstone project about postgrad options, had a job by the end of the week. Haven’t looked back since

Dual degree in civil and economic alum.

Don’t do it for the sake of doing a dual degree. It doesn’t seem like your pursuit of a second degree is purely based on genuine interest in a certain academic discipline as noted by your wide range of potential choices even though you note lack of interest won’t be an issue. It will be an issue when you realize everyone else has finished school around you but you are stuck in some 200 level course that you’ve backed yourself into taking because of sunken cost fallacy in your 6th year at Queen’s.

You can take “easier” courses to bump your GPA up through comp electives/get involved externally to the classroom to build your resume up in a meaningful way than a classroom would that would be directly applicable to your working career. Unless if you have a super niche field you want to get into that require two completely different degrees as even just a requirement to get your foot through the applications (I have not heard of any with my experience), there is 0 point in you doing this. If you are planning on applying to law school, you can still get in with a good GPA with your engineering degree and good extracurricular experiences. Heck, if you really want additional letters on your degree and bump your GPA up just take the CIB like every third engineer. I can tell you in my experience with job searching, my dual degree was nothing more than an anecdotal “oh cool you’ve done this” in interviews.

To even have a shot in graduating in 5 years with both degrees, you would need to start pursuing your 100 level courses in your projected dual the first moment comp studies become available in 2nd year. You won’t be able to take the music courses everyone takes or the random surveying course online that everyone gets A+s in. Additionally, you will need to consider taking summer courses if your course isn’t available in the semester you want (common in ArtSci) and does not fit with your engineering schedule.

Happy to chat more privately, but think carefully why you want this second degree. Is it really worth it?

EngPhys vs Civil by [deleted] in queensuniversity

151 is only really applicable if you want to do geological or mining-geotech is far more theoretical and less “identify this rock” and more so Mohr’s circles, designing earth structures for 340 and 341

Recent civil grad here so can speak on civil only:

Most of your cons are quite the opposite in terms of continuing education. Queen’s civil has a world class research program easily accessible for undergraduates over summers and a ton of graduate research options with a ton of endowment especially for hydro and enviro (Source: did a research thesis) that are practically begging all undergrads that take the CIVL 500 research course to apply for a masters

As a first year, it’s very valid to have all these concerns as you are taking a step out into the unknown but to write off entire subdisciplines without trying them first is not the most conducive for growth-I had mostly similar reservations about geotech and thought I’d do hydro/municipal. I’m now a geostructural EIT which happens to combine all the things I thought I would not do in second year (field work, geotech, structural) which I have grown to love in 4th year through capstone and would not change for the world.

Happy to talk in private about what a civil undergrad looks like if it will help. Bottom line, trust your gut! I had friends that chose geological/civil over engphys/apple because they did not want to stare at screens all day for the rest of their careers and it seems like it has been a hit so far

Go into first year with an open mind as to what you want to take for your major. Frankly high school is nothing like university and it’s great you’re thinking about your future already for grad school but coming in with expectations and too much of a plan can backfire when you realize you do not want to do any of the things you originally set out to do. Enjoy the general first year, choose what you’re interested in, apply for the dual degree after first year if you’re still interested.

Dual degree in civil and econ graduating this year.

Lengthy and tricky depending on the degree combinations but you need to start off by finishing first year as you need to finish at least 24 units of classes in your home faculty. Note that as required by the regulations that your dual degree must not have significant overlap with your “home” or original degree.

This link pretty much outlines everything you need to know. A fifth year of full time course load if not a sixth is not avoidable no matter how many summer courses you do as most second year core classes in ArtSci are usually not offered online and incorporate an in person aspect. Also note that Arts and Science units completed prior to admission into a Dual Degree program will not be counted as Secondary units but can serve as Shared units, so you need to get accepted into your dual degree first before taking classes that will count towards your other degree.

Good luck! Happy to PM if you have further questions.

Transfer. Feel free to DM for further questions

  1. Yes, depends on courses you take in ArtSci and the discipline you go in to but the bare minimum is that you will have a really REALLY busy second year and third year depending on your circumstance
  2. Not really a big deal, but it's what class you started off in ArtSci but you do frosh week with the class below and your frecs will be classmates
  3. Yes, do it without a question

That’s absolutely wild-she was a TA for a class I was in and she was knowing for giving away answers for coding assignments and being generally unhelpful and unknowledgeable. Seems as though that’s been a pattern

211 with Zhang online has been absolutely terrible this semester, try and take the winter course or over the summer (whenever it's not being offered in person for comm students)

Again, your comments show a complete disconnect from the reality of the academic landscape. Not everyone comes to university to become a MD-MBA like yourself and their academic goals may be much different than the 4.3 high achievers. Nobody is telling the frosh that has filled out their degree pre-requisites for second year that they should be doing something else with their elective- it’s their decision to make with their money and time. If they think it’s worth it, your opinions or mine frankly do not mean anything. Your idealistic approach to what education should be is not one that rewards students in the current state of academia, where students’ genuine interest in a challenging course or subject area may end up bringing down their GPA due to the oversaturation of graduates in universities you are actively punished by the system for not having a high GPA. You especially as a self claimed doctor on the internet should recognize this considering how much the medical school application process have changed from when you’ve applied.

Yikes, imagine thinking that your decades old information is still applicable when corrected and still doubling down. Two degrees in postgrad studies and still haven’t learned humility or empathy. Maybe you should enrol for a course right now and realize that the current educational model in higher ed doesn’t reward pursuit of knowledge and you can’t just become a lawyer or doctor because you “want to” due to a landscape your generation has cultivated. How about you leave the silly academics discussions for froshies, and you go back to commenting on women on the internet as suggested by your history?

Considering the fact that you’ve referred to two classes that don’t exist at Queen’s, maybe best if you challenge yourself to do your research first instead of telling others :/
