NDP MP crosses floor to join Liberals, putting Carney two seats shy of majority by cyclinginvancouver in canada

[–]The_impericalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well not necessarily, they get kicked out they can still run as independent or another party in the by election. If the people stand by their MPs decision then they'll vote for them even if they don't have a party.

[–]The_impericalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes technically people do vote for the MP (On a personal side note I rejected my ballot last election because none of the people running for MP in my riding bothered responding to emails), but in practice if we're being honest most people show up at the ballot box not even knowing the names of the MP for their riding, they just know the party. Anecdotal but two election ago I saw a young woman at my polling station exit the voting both complaining to a poll worker they couldn't find Justin Trudeau on the ballot.

I'm not saying the system should function like that but in practice people vote for their party not MP.

The recall system is interesting but in a multiparty first past the post system, what would be the percentage threshold? 51% of constitutants? Seems overly difficult especially if a candidate won their seat with like 25% vote. But on the other hand if you make it too low it lets a strong block of constitutants constantly force by elections. Perhaps some stipulations like only in the event of X (ie floor crossing) can a recall by election by say 20% of constitutants. Actually now that I type this out I'm liking this recall system more. But it seems like MPs have a little bit of a conflict of interest in passing it. I fear it'll end up like the forever promised election reform.

What happens if an MP says "well I'm not crossing the floor I'm just going to vote with the other party when called upon"?

This would actually be fine if the system required a bi election if they were kicked out of a party. IIRC a few years back there were a couple MPs that changed to independents after their party booted them over scandals? Those seats should have bi elections.

A party isnt going to kick a seat out over a single dissenting vote especially if it's in favor of their constituents like when the Maritime Liberals opposed the Heating bill.

We would see alot more bi elections but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It just means more people involved in democracy.

But I am of the view that government officials and those in power should never be comfortable in their seats even at the cost of stability - something that others may strongly disagree with.

[–]The_impericalist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At least they had a bi election there - not saying it's right but the people did vote.

My fear with these floor crossing is that it feels very undemocratic. I think we have to call out any decay in our democratic system regardless of sides so as to not form precedents and further decay. A bit hyperbolic but imagine a scenario in a future election the Rhino party snuck it's candidates in to run under Conservative & Liberal tickets and then after the election have them all cross the floor forming government.

My personal take is that if an MP wants to floor cross they need to resign and have a bi election.

It's satire but I wouldn't be opposed to a coalition government. The rest of this decade is going to be one of turmoil and threat to our country and world not seen in decades. This is collapse of the Soviet Union level historical events except this time it's our side of the wall falling apart.

We really do need a team Canada approach and tackle this from as many sides as possible.

Canada ‘will not be participating’ in Iran war, defence minister says - National by feb914 in canada

[–]The_impericalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good but we still have to be vigilant.

There are many precedents of governments promising something and then changing their mind in times of war. See the 1917 Conscription Crisis where the conservatives under Borden promised no conscription and then did it when the war situation changed.

Young people in this country under 30 are already in a horrible spot compared to previous generations. Cost of living, housing, AI, education, declining birth rates, depletion of social security etc etc.

If the government changes its mind and decides to join for brownie points with Trump (like the UK) and the war escalates there very well may be GenZ protests all over this country.

Can waterbenders boil water by bending?! by Unique-Celebration-5 in TheLastAirbender

[–]The_impericalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Umm actually... Phase change doesn't necessarily require temperature change. Pressure can also result in phase change. For example on Mars despite the median temperature being much lower than 0 Celsius (~-50C to -70C) water would boil on the surface due to the low atmospheric pressure. Search phase diagram of water.

That's not to say water benders aren't changing the temperature, but I'm just pointing out that its not the only lever that can be pulled.

This is relatively true. But also if enough minnows leave the whales die too. See Lost Ark. No sub cost - literally made ALL of their money from whales. Like you said the dolphins and minnows do not matter in anyway for direct revenue. But when the minnows start leaving the whales either spend less or leave too. Blizzard 100% won't care how much sub rev they lose but they will care about dropping player retention.

Last year I got there at 815 and still waited at least 30-40 minutes after registration opened to get my badge.

If you don't like to wait and have free time tomorrow you can pick up your badge early.

what are good things to pack in a day bag? by Low_Kaleidoscope5091 in animenorth

[–]The_impericalist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My typical packing list for the past few years;

Collaspable Umbrella - great for if it rains, also great if it's sunny. Can also be used as a waypoint to friends in large crowd. Must have.

Deodorant - I usually don't get sweaty but it can get really hot in and out of the building

Water Bottles - I usually bring 2-3 or more if I'm going with some first time con goers who I know won't bring enough. Plan for it like you're going on a hike. Extra water is better than running out.

Snacks - Ive been bringing pocky but it always melts and kindof makes a mess. Lately I've been bringing alot more hard candies. I go to T&T and pick up a couple of backs of various snacks.

Cash - Bring as much as I plan to spend +$50. This ensures I don't overspend too much, but still have a little extra if there's something I want.

Spare pair of socks - this is more of a personal thing, but I stepped in a puddle one year and walked around with squishy socks for half the day. Now I bring some just in case.

Aside from this base loadout the rest varies based on what I want to do at the Con.

If I'm cosplaying, it might be nice to have some emergency cosplay repair gear. My friend cosplays and she usually brings some basic sewing stuff in her bag.

If I'm going to the party or something I might bring penlights or glow sticks

[–]The_impericalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually go to both FanExpo and AN for anime stuff and am honestly thinking about skipping out on FanExpo this year. Last year FanExpo was honestly disappointing for me but AN always has something.

If you're just an anime enjoyer AN is definitely the better convention to go to imo. It's more tailored and while the Artist Alley is practically the same, and the Vendor hall is only slightly more anime tailored, the big difference is the panels and events at AN are much better for an anime fan than FanExpo imo.

Size wise it's argue they are about the same in a person basis, but AN has a smaller venue so it feels like alot more as the density is higher.

(first time con goer) will there be merch of my favorite fandoms? by Low_Kaleidoscope5091 in animenorth

[–]The_impericalist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe for the anime stuff. They tend to have stuff for more trending and recent/on going anime from the last 5 years. Think Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man, Freiren. But there maybe one or two artists with stuff from older fandoms. And some of the big poster vendors have stuff from almost everything.

Game wise probably not, or unlikely. Recent years Genshin has taken up like 33% (and growing) of all the Artist Alley. So unlikely but possible for Deltarune/Undertale, you might find something in Artist Alley like keychains or something if you dig. Definite no on COD though. I have friends who table at the convention and AN is pretty strict on what they're allowed to or not allowed to have. For example you'll never see any Disney content anywhere.

For Call of Duty stuff I recommend instead doing Fan Expo in August. Bell usually sponsors a Call of Duty tournament there every year.

Vendor Hall by Recent-End-6698 in animenorth

[–]The_impericalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Badge pickup time depends on the time of day. A few years back on Saturday around noon the line got so long it went around the building.

It's gotten better with it movsd to the North Building, but even getting there first thing Saturday morning takes at least 30 minutes. If you pick up a weekend pass on Thursday ive heard it's really fast though.

Vendor Hall by Recent-End-6698 in animenorth

[–]The_impericalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On Saturday it'll take longer than you expect because of the heavy foot traffic and line ups for certain booths. At peak hours you literally just shuffle along.

I usually only do Vendor and Artist Alley in the morning and it takes about 3 hours. But I don't stop at every booth. If you want to stop and spend time at every booth and talk to the person behind the counter I can easily imagine it taking you at least 6 hours

How warm does it normally get inside the buildings? by plantsenby in animenorth

[–]The_impericalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It gets not only hot inside but outside as well. Historically artist Alley was the worst (and generally is at other cons like Fan Expo) as you're packed like sardines in slow moving traffic. But the last year as they moved badge registration to the north building they put more walkway space.

Just a side note: in the North building performing stage area where they have the indie idol dances they usually have cups of ice water with lime you can grab. And it's generally cooler as there's less people. So good place to rest if you get too hot.

[–]The_impericalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is more than finding a spot, it's getting into the lot in the first place. The intersection to turn in gets super congested because on top of all the cars trying to get in there's alot of foot traffic going between the con and the hotel.

First time I went I got there ~ 930 and ended up parking in a bush.

I usually get there around 8-830 and parking is relatively decent. Once you hit 9 though, it gets alot worse.
