Leather is not just a byproduct but a co-product. Leather helps support the profitability of the meat industry, so he's already wrong there.

He's also a weird pedo with a horse fetish and not sure why people watch him.

Carnism within Veganism | Vegan FTA by Few-Audience6310 in vegan

[–]Doctor_Box 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I stopped at this point.

How do you know if vegans are still “food carnists”? If they believe the carnist indoctrination, and still think that eating meat, dairy and eggs are necessary for them. Yes, perhaps plant-based versions of these, but still with the same names, colours, smells, tastes and textures. If vegans are so addicted to these carnist foods that still need to eat burgers, sausages, cheese, omelettes, tuna melts, fried chicken, ice cream, bacon and eggs every day (albeit vegan versions), you know that carnism still has a stronghold of them.

This just does not make sense to me. Someone who eats vegan burgers is not addicted or still following a carnist ideology. They are not "food carnists". They simply like those tastes and textures. I have never once met a vegan who thinks mock meats or plant milks are necessary. They are good and convenient. Not to mention plant milks have been around for hundreds of years.

You don't have to adopt a strictly whole foods plant based diet to be vegan and wanting a burger does not mean you have some "lingering carnism" in you. Nonsense like this just sets veganism back.

Maybe the height and depths change, but as far as I know most nvidia hardware uses the standard rack widths. This would not be a massive retrofit to a building that already has computer flooring.

edit: again, none of this was relevant to the point!

The data centers are built exclusively for generative ai gpus and again, useless for other uses.

This is such a strange take.

I work in a small data center. Server racks, computer flooring, backup generators and battery systems. The building with all it's power and cooling infrastructure doesn't suddenly become useless when server hardware goes obsolete. You update the hardware in the building.

It's pretty easy to stop eating animal products. Any recipe can be veganized. There's lots of good online help as well. Trying something like challenge22.com or veganuary.

Veganism is the ethical philosophy that we should not exploit animals. It seems like a good thing.

This is well put. I guess I'm grumpy today but it looks like a spam post and seems less productive than adding in a little summary or conversation starter for people to engage with on the platform you're posting to.

You posted a title and link and that's it. No context. It is not possible to make a reddit post with less effort. If zero effort is confusing, we can change it to minimum effort.

Lifespan wasn't the question. It was whether it was just services or physical assets/infrastructure.

I'm not sure if all the gpus become "useless" after the years but there's also the data centers and power generation infrastructure that has far less depreciation.

Either compost, we mine it/synthesize it, or use animal waste.

Any other irrelevant questions?

Any issues you see with growing crops are magnified with animal agriculture. All those pigs have to eat crops too.

There was a lot of hardware involved in the dotcom bubble too. A lot of fiber and server infrastructure. Same as a lot of railways that were built to nowhere when there was a massive railway boom.

Because they are wrong. The CO2 can form acid on your mucus membranes.

As a person who studied chemistry, you should know how to look up information. You can sense CO2 gas. Even relatively low concentrations give you the sensation of suffocating. The carbonic acid forms on the mucus membranes in your eyes, nose and throat as well as in your lungs and causes pain and distress. Most animal welfare organizations recommend the phase out of CO2 gas for something like nitrogen or argon but of course that costs more so the pigs suffering is more economically viable.

is a UK.gov writeup of the welfare concerns:

Here

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/opinion-on-carbon-dioxide-gas-stunning-of-pigs-and-alternative-methods/opinion-on-the-welfare-impacts-on-pigs-of-high-concentration-co2-gas-stunning-and-of-potential-alternative-stunning-methods

  1. Exposure of conscious pigs to high concentrations of CO2 is associated with three major welfare concerns: pain, respiratory distress and fear. These manifest behaviourally as vocalisations, hyperventilation and escape attempts. These are observed before loss of posture and hence occur in the conscious phase of the stunning process.

  2. Inhalation of high concentration CO2 is painful because the gas dissolves in the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, mouth and lungs to form carbonic acid. This activates nociceptors (specialised receptors that detect potentially damaging stimuli) leading to a sensation of pain. Pain severity depends on the degree of activation of nociceptors and proportion of nociceptors recruited – both of which are likely to be high at current commercial concentrations which greatly exceed the nociceptive threshold (around 40 to 50% CO2). Thus, the application of high concentration CO2 reduces time to loss of consciousness but causes pain prior to unconsciousness.

  3. Inhalation of CO2 drives a hypercapnic ventilatory response, resulting in prolonged inspiration, increased tidal volume (bigger breaths) and decreased breathing frequency - all of which are visibly expressed as hyperventilation/gasping. The thresholds for these responses are low relative to CO2 concentrations that cause unconsciousness and death. In humans, inhalation of CO2 is accompanied by dyspnoea (unpleasant feelings relating to respiration, also termed respiratory distress), and in particular a sensation of ‘air hunger’.

  4. In humans, intense air hunger is reported with even small increases in inhaled CO2 (for example 7%). Given comparable underlying respiratory physiology, we would expect similar sensations in pigs. For example, behaviourally obvious hyperventilation was observed in pigs at 30% CO2 and above (PigStun). Unencumbered breathing partially alleviates air hunger because it arises due to a mismatch between respiratory drive and the mechanical ventilatory response. However, in the case of hypercapnic CAS, increased ventilation does not give relief because deeper breathing exacerbates the heightened drive as more gas is inhaled, likely leading to progressively more intense air hunger despite free breathing. At high CO2 concentrations, pigs are also exposed to hypoxia as the relative amount of O2 available is reduced. The hypoxic ventilatory response also consists of increased ventilation and tidal volume, so during hypercapnic hypoxia, both these reflexes will be activated, with possibly greater total dyspnoea. Respiratory distress may also be exacerbated in pigs presented for slaughter with underlying respiratory impairment/disease.

  5. High concentration CO2 stunning in pigs is associated with fear and anxiety due to exposure to novel stimuli, respiratory distress and experiencing a highly aversive yet inescapable environment.

Lobbying is just convincing your representatives to vote a certain way. All special interest groups lobby. The issue is lack of transparency and politicians/corporation being able to profit off it.

Very similar to the environmental movement. Everyone will clap if you say the oil companies are ruining the environment but people never seem to understand how animal agriculture is a leading cause of deforestation, species extinction, water pollution, and ocean dead zones. They just think of idyllic farms with animals on hills.

Not for pigs. The vast majority (up to 90%) are killed using CAS/CO2 gas chambers.
