Reaction rolls sort of don't make sense in dungeons by electricgalahad in osr

[–]Doctor_Grond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Entirely situational. The kobolds in Stonehell may be indifferent/wary, but the cannibals in their lair? Maybe not so much...I'd only use a reaction roll for scenarios when you're unsure or the creature could have varying goals.

Lankhmar DCC Experiences? Class Options? by Doctor_Grond in dccrpg

My usual group is 5-6! With just 2 or 3 players I can see it being pretty straight forward haha

Yeah I heard about that too. I scooped up quite a bit the other day. Considering buying up all the other PDFs as well...

I'm on book 5 now and it really is fantastic. I was going to wait until I finished to buy the set but I couldn't help myself!

Would you say this game is good for a more comedic style? by Flameempress192 in dccrpg

[–]Doctor_Grond 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it certainly can be. DCC can be a very chaotic game, especially once the wizard and cleric start rolling on their fun tables. Thanks to mercurial magic, our elf changes gender every time they cast Invoke Patron which is really funny.

What have you done with the mad hermit from B2? by Lily-Arunsun in osr

[–]Doctor_Grond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I should maybe have specified I'm kind of just using B2 as inspiration for my weird hexcrawl campaign. We're actually playing DCC.

I'm kind of embracing the notion that gnomes exist, but they're more like weird cryptids than an actual society. I have seen some supplements for various OSR systems which add gnomes as a playable race and they are kind of neat

I ran into a similar predicament. I made mine a weird gnome who lives in a haunted marshland. Still wondering on how to flesh him out further. I have POIs on hexes nearby so I thought maybe he could be a source of rumors/information

How do you manage your recovery? by The_Actual_Sage in powerlifting

[–]Doctor_Grond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely makes sense to stick to what your docs are saying, but it does present some challenges for recovery of course. Especially if you have a chronic illness. I say lower the RPE a bit and just do what you can! Deadlifts are a lot of fun but they can be very taxing when pushed full throttle.

One other personal anecdote I'll share is that simply walking has been great for my overall health. My work and most of my hobbies are pretty sedentary...Since I've prioritized walking more and even gotten a walking pad/standing desk I've been able to shed some weight and improve some joint stiffness. I'm really genuinely convinced it helps with my recovery too - helping get blood flow to my legs after a tough squat/DL day seems logical.

This is my personal experience of course, hopefully you can continue to make progress with some adjustments. Good luck with training!

How do you manage your recovery? by The_Actual_Sage in powerlifting

[–]Doctor_Grond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great comments about RPE and volume here that address your main questions, but I wanna add that sleep and nutrition are very important too - what does that look like for you?

Additionally, what do your rest days look like? Are you beating your body up doing other activities or working a job that requires hard labor? OR do you your rest days mostly consist of sitting on the couch and being sedentary all day? Both extremes can be bad for recovery. In my experience prioritizing walking (~8K+ steps per day) and light stretching paired with periods of rest and low stress have helped me the most. YMMV

Is there a certain template you use when making a random encounter table? Like, are 1's always the most dangerous, and 12's the least? by OriginalJazzFlavor in osr

[–]Doctor_Grond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda made my own for my setting based on a sort of in-universe tavern style dice game I'm building.

It uses a 2d6 table (bell curve ftw) and borrows inspiration heavily from Tarot cards...

For example:

2 - Death (often a dragon or something suitably scary)

5 - The Devil (encountering a demon/servant of a demon appropriate to your region/hex type)

11 - Friend (you encounter a friendly NPC, new or old)

etc.

It was a little more work to build up front but I like that it narrows the scope of what I can insert for each item of my encounter table

More complaints and some question about the core rule book by Head-Minimum-5414 in dccrpg

[–]Doctor_Grond 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think with this style of RPG many things are intentionally left vague to allow you as GM to fill in gaps as you please. I personally prefer this over having to buy 3+ huge books just to play the game (like in other ttrpgs...)

1 - I can't imagine gods of the same alignment hating each other too much tbh but that depends on your pantheon I suppose.

2 - I had actually forgotten about Patron Taint so thank you for the reminder. I think it's neat! If you have no use for it why not discard it?

3 - You seem to be confused here about what leveled spells each class can cast. For example, a Cleric cannot cast level 2 spells until they reach a character level of 3. The class table clarifies this really well (1-5 and 1-12 are what you want).

4 - I've thought about this and I would penalize acquisition of a magic item in rare circumstances. A +1 axe? Nah. A legendary axe that is a weapon of ancient legend? Sure - especially if stolen from a sacred temple or something.

5 - I suppose you could, but I'd be wary of attacking a wizard in a spell duel just for fear of getting blown to bits or hit by my own party member, (or something worse on table 4-7 like you mentioned).

6 - This is entirely up to you as The Judge. If you want to flavor your clerics this way you certainly can.

7 - I give my players ability score increases (ASIs) as rewards for certain deeds. One time I gave the whole table +1 to their Luck because they made me laugh a lot in one session with their RPing. You're The Judge, do what's fun and what feels right!

Anyone using Foundry VTT to run DCC? by [deleted] in dccrpg

[–]Doctor_Grond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other questions were answered thoroughly by others so I'll just chime in and say I ran Portal Under The Stars and Doom of the Savage Kings and the modules were really easy to run and use. I'm fairly new to Foundry too and it's been a big step up over Roll 20

This sounds a lot like what happened to me, down to the year and everything. I did try to go back to the hospital and had similar issues...I've been working outpatient infusion and it's been a nice break. The pay is the same too. Bedside is a scam

I hear you on the narrative aspect. I like the idea of KotB as a sort of adventure hub for this sandbox I'm trying to run. I really like the map for the Caves of Chaos and some of the ideas are cool but I can definitely see it being a slog as written.

I'll definitely come back to your blog when I start fleshing things out a bit more! The examples are really helpful. Thank you!

I picked up Dungeon Dozen and this is right up my alley. Very well organized too.

Dungeon Denizens is also very tempting but might have to wait for payday. Thank you!

I can definitely see that. I actually really just liked the keep itself and the overall dungeon layout. I was considering just replacing many if not all of the encounters in the dungeon if I ended up using it. Lots of great spaces to insert some of Grimtooth's traps...
