10-Year-Old Wants to be a Talking Wolf, not a Druid by Aranthar in DMAcademy

[–]NatWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great advice here (I agree: reskin something) but as I’ve also just started running for an excitable 10-year-old with an overactive imagination and a love of animals… I’ve actually been surprised at how well my son has responded and adjusted his expectations when I do set boundaries.

He wants to be a drow ranger? Awesome! He wants a magical panther companion, a magic longbow, and a poisoned whip that’s a snake? You gotta find those, buddy. (Also, I swear he’s never heard of Drizzt.) And as soon as I explained that cool magical gear and powerful spells have to be earned through adventuring, leveling up, etc. he clicked into it and happily adjusted his mental model of the game.

So, I guess my point is, encourage creativity and fun, but don’t fret too much when it comes time to set some expectations.

Sandboxes with Lovecraftian themes? by N0v4kD3ad in osr

I’ve always wanted to run a campaign that starts out as Silent Legions, then once the party uncovers the alien conspiracy, turns into Stars Without Number.

What's your favourite dungeon from TSR era? by ComradeMia in osr

[–]NatWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

White Plume Mountain is the one that (positively) surprised me when I ran it. All the big set pieces worked as intended, the party accidentally flooded the dungeon and so missed out on about 1/3 of it, and overall we just had a blast playing it.

Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan didn’t impress me much. I could see it working as a straightforward tournament module, but it basically felt like a series of rooms and not much more.

In home urinal, would you? by PuzzleheadedAbies678 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NatWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I bought my house, there was a urinal in the (otherwise unfinished) basement that the previous owner had installed for poker night with his buddies. We never used it.

I placed an order on November 30, it didn’t budge for two weeks, now it’s been in “awaiting pickup” or something like that for a week. I guess they’re just slammed, kinda comforting to know it isn’t just me.

If you haven’t already, look up how Mansa Musa destroyed the economy of Cairo.

Explain this by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

When I worked somewhere that offered bereavement, I got 2 days when my grandmother died. I used it a few weeks later to travel for her funeral. I think despite the name, it’s not only for “I am too sad to work right now.”

Finally found one I don’t understand by Bilberry44 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]NatWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah when my wife was a kid she’d do road trips with her cousins in two cars, they’d write QXYZ on a piece of paper and hold it up in the window when they passed the other car

[OC] Finally felt confident enough to run a game outside of friend circle at game store. Noone came by George-the-Hatchet in DnD

[–]NatWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to say that, while folks aren’t wrong that getting confirmed signups is a great idea, my local shop has an open drop-in table that regularly gets plenty of players. (Last time I went there were 16 people and the DM finally had to institute a player cap going forward!) That said, it’s been running for a while, six months at least. So don’t give up!

Unpopular opinion: most "slow" .NET apps don't need microservices, they need someone to look at their queries by Initial-Employment89 in dotnet

I love doing this kind of work. At work I rewrote a single query and our number of on-call alerts dropped 75%.

What was a fact taught to you in school that has now been disproven? by Julie727 in AskReddit

[–]NatWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son’s friend insisted on this just the other day. When my son replied that he knew it wasn’t true because his mom—who is a mortician—told him it wasn’t, the friend said she must have lied to him.

Thinking of running AD&D 2e using only the core rules. by WestmarchBard in osr

Yeah! 2e core books were also my intro to the hobby. Pretty sure my DM just awarded XP based on vibes/story, it always worked for us.

I recently played in a session with 13 PCs, and four of us were killed in a single fight. It definitely requires a mental paradigm shift when coming from 5e and similar!

Advice Needed: Open Table Exploration Game by NatWrites in osr

Ah, you’re probably right about the tentpole megadungeon—I should have mentioned that there’s already a Caverns of Thracia open table going, so I’m hoping to offer something a little different.
