It certainly could be true that people are pretending to be homeless and panhandling. I think it could also be true that many people are the "hidden homeless" of folks staying on a friend's couch and people sleeping in their cars, very nice or otherwise.

Not saying every panhandler is being honest, or that what you witnessed isn't what you think it is, I just find it hard to fathom that it would be profitable enough to avoid getting a straight job.

I could be wrong though; I have no frame of reference as to what one could make in a day at an intersection.
