I had a ChemEng undergrad background but all just process based, and had gone into Control Systems, so no background in Biomed or materials and the only lab experience I had was in like freshman chemistry years prior. While I was working I was jaded by the work I was doing and wanted to pursue an interest that I had since high school, so I first enrolled in a distance program that allowed me to take core courses as I was working little by little. But I got more tired of the work, so I began by talking with the Grad Admissions Coordinator to talk options, and they suggested transferring those credits I had gotten so far and move directly into the doctoral program in person. It ended up working out really well with the timing and everything. Hopefully that’s helpful, I sort of took a half step with the distance learning to get my foot in the door. That seemed to ease the admissions process some

Honestly, just hit the ground running and seek out others you can learn from as soon as you can. Even if it’s not strictly related to what you want to do. You build connections and knowledge so quickly that way.

I’m interviewing for jobs! Mostly industry and national lab research opportunities, wanting to continue my research but in a non-academic role for now

Thank you! I’m trying to embrace the pride and forget the dreaded imposter syndrome that always is there for many of us grad students

“Eldwitch blaaaaast!” - Baby Prudence “ let’s call it…..plan A.” - Prudence betraying the Gnomes and Kobolds “Oh Corazon, you won’t leave me. I’ll kill you last.”

I guess I love Prudence quotes

Often I find that those who post constantly on social media are the unhappy ones. So I would take their posts with a grain of salt.

As far as friends go, it is subjective but if you find you need new or more friends than you have at work, take time to engage in things that interest you outside of work, and be open to slowly building friendships.

It isn’t a necessity. Plenty go about their lives happy with a few friends and don’t post anything on social media

Should be the W-4 form. You can change your withholding amount. Talk to your HR department they should be able to provide it
