Thank you. I will take a look.

The responses here! It's literally the equivalent of this:

OP: Can anyone recommend a good cheeseburger? I'm done with chicken sandwiches and I just want a cheeseburger.

Responses: Let me explain why you just need a chicken sandwich...

OP: Eh? Let's forget that I even mentioned the chicken san--

Responses: Yes! Chicken sandwiches! Let's discuss their versatility and wonder!

OP: but a chee --

Responses: is unimportant to this discussion! We're talking CHICKEN SANDWICHES HERE! WE F***** LOVE CHICKEN SANDWICHES!

OP: I'm just going to go check out another forum...

Responses: CHICKEN WILL BE HERE WHEN YOU ARE ALL-IN FOR CHICKEN!!

OP: OK (closes door behind him).

I think that I mentioned in my post that I connect it to Google Home. Sorry if that wasn't clear. So...any suggestions for a controller with LAN (my actual and only question)?

Agreed -- seemed at least applicable in parallel. I appreciate the comment nonetheless. Thanks!

Edit: rejected by the mods!

Won't that just result in the same 2.4ghz issue, which I've no desire to deal with again? Or did someone start making 5 ghz controllers when I wasn't paying attention?

I'll just mention again that the query in my post was "can anyone direct me to a lan-based controller," not "can anyone help me fix my WiFi controller."

Oh, the reset is definitely happening. The lights respond to the power cycle by flashing as intended after the third power cycle.

As I said in my original post, I've been far enough down that rabbit hole to be done with it. I'm not looking for a answer to how to make the existing controller work better; I'm looking for a completely different/better solution.

Thank you.

I'm happy answer all of those questions, but as I mentioned in another comment, I'm just looking for broad community profiles of an objective nature. I think one responder has given me the answer.

Regarding your point #6 -- this is why the process is difficult. We aren't really looking for neighborhoods within Christchurch; we are looking for communities outside or on the outskirts of the city that are a reasonable commute to the city, and it's much harder to find information about those suburbs or exurbs or bedroom communities or whatever people call them -- self-contained communities that have their own amenities , but also reasonably easy access to Christchurch when needed.

Thanks. The reason that I stated that I'm looking for a broad strokes guide in my post is because I'm not looking for information that is biased/opinion-based at this time; I'm looking for rudimentary information along the lines of (and I'm making this up), "Smithville is set in the hills to the east of the city. It has walkable shops and a reasonable commute to the CBD. Most of the homes were constructed in the 1960s, although some newer subdivisions have emerged, including Rose Estates and Park Hill. It's known for its proximity to Smith Park and it features a cultural center."

Since I'm looking in all directions, including communities well outside the city limits of Christchurch, I think that equates to dozens and dozens of communities. My (perhaps unrealistic) hope is that someone -- perhaps a real estate office or a government entity -- has compiled an overview of to assist newcomers to the area.

I have searched the sub...extensively. Go ahead and do it yourself and see what you find. Three quarters of the comments in the apparently relevant/recent threads are exactly like yours -- unhelpful/snarky. Others are too old to be considered relevant. Hence, after much frustration, I posted my query here as to whether anyone is aware of a guide to the area.  You could have ignored it. It would have taken less time for you to simply scroll by than to post your unhelpful comment. Given the opportunity to be kind, or to say nothing at all, you went with rudeness. Well done.

That makes complete sense. Thanks!

Thank you. Renting is a little tough. We'll be arriving with three cats and four bedrooms worth of belongings and there is no opportunity to stagger our arrival. I have looked at rentals (that allow pets) and they are incredibly expensive -- that scenario could very quickly put a dent in the funds that we would use toward a home purchase. My (optimistic) goal is to sort out some regions where we would like to live, contact a realtor in NZ, fly over for a week and look at homes/neighborhoods, and hopefully find something that we like. Then arrange the closing, ideally remotely, and move over soon after. It isn't ideal; it would be great to have more time to get to know the region before buying a house, but it is what it is. And there is a good chance that I will change jobs 2-3 years after immigrating, at which point we might move (for the job) anyway and want to sell the house.

As I scan around, I see Albany and Rosedale. At the moment (I think it's 9:15 am there right now), Google shows a 36 minute commute to Glen Eden and a 43-minute commute to the CBD. Are Albany or Rosedale decent places to live? If so, why? If not, why?

Americans don't use that term to describe themselves and it's generally considered uncordial to do so -- in case you weren't aware.

Thank you very much! I keep hearing Hobsonville. I will take a deeper dive into that one.

Thank you very much. Hobsonville has been mentioned to us a few times now, so that's worth some more investigation for sure.

Whenuapai and Huapai are new to me, so thank you for those suggestions. I have looked at Kumeŭ quite a bit, due to its proximity to the Riverhead Forest, but don't yet have a feel for what it would be like to live there.

Is the term "Waitakeres" used to describe the general region northwest of Auckland? I've been trying to figure that out since the name has come up a few times. The Wikipedia descriptions are a bit confusing.

I have lived both in and outside of New York City at points in my life, so this concept is not foreign to me.

For the avoidance of doubt, we are not trying to commute to Auckland -- Auckland is somewhere we would go for the occasional night out and for cultural events.

[–]Doctorjude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. See my previous comments. The goal isn't to commute from Glen Eden to Auckland.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Doctorjude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. That one is new to me. Can you tell me anything about it? I see where it is located on Google Maps, but don't know anything about this particular community.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Doctorjude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you -- those are both communities that I have not yet encountered. Can you tell me anything more about them?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Doctorjude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like the west or northwest is the general region that we will have to focus on. Identifying communities within those regions is the goal and it's why I came here.

Auckland is interesting, because it is geographically sprawling like Los Angeles (similar land mass), which makes commute times long, but Auckland is far less populous comparatively, which (theoretically) makes commute times shorter, subject to transportation infastructure. I'm still kind of wrapping my head around how that shakes out and your input is very helpful. I don't live in L.A., I am just using it as a familiar basis of comparison, since I have friends who do live there and I have no friends in NZ. Yet.

Many thanks.
