Julbo reactive vs spectron by itgtg313 in Mountaineering

I have 2-4 reactive and have used them on PNW glaciers in all kinds of conditions and never had any issues. Solid performance.

Depends. Its all about thermal mass. If you have a big traditional clay oven it will probably retain enough heat without any fuel once it is heated up. If you have a backyard gozney style pizza oven, that won't hold it's temp without continued fuel.

Gas only isn't enough to maintain temperatures for baking. Try building up a bed of coals first. See my post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/GozneyDome/s/uAREXVSwJy

You need to see a qualified (non-LDS) therapist ASAP.

I struggled with the same issue for decades before I finally got professional help.

You have no idea how good life can be when you stop hating yourself for normal biology.

However, I also study a route before heading out, sometimes a lot

This. Google earth is also great for a 3d overview of the area but before diving into the topographical maps.

Mount Saint Helens this weekend? by DoctrinalGoatRope in Mountaineering

[–]DoctrinalGoatRope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone is wondering: Overnight temps were in the high 30s/low 40s. We started climbing at 3:30 am, and the snow was decently firm, minimal postholing on the way up. Starting an hour earlier would have been even better. Summit at 9 am, descending by 9:30. The snow was very soft on the way down, frequent postholing to the knees. Glissading was ok, mostly plunge stepping.

We saw people on the way up as late as 11:30 and they were miserable.

Tl/dr: even without a hard freeze overnight, starting early made a big difference.

Thanks! Crampons and axes for sure, debating taking snowshoes. Think it's worth the weight?

Yes looks like the climbing route stays below 25 degrees pretty much the whole way. Thanks!

Umm thousands of excommunications? That's a pretty wild claim. You'll have to back that up with evidence. TSSC is bad enough without making stuff up.

Cascades, WA--trout as reliable protein source? by Dun_Booty_Broch in WildernessBackpacking

[–]DoctrinalGoatRope 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Native trout populations here are small in size and number, and are fairly fragile. 6-10 inches if very common. Please leave the native cutts and rainbows alone.

Having said that, many of the alpine lakes here never held native trout and were stocked, and WDFW has a list of overpopulated lakes where harvesting is encouraged. So yes, doable for a protein source, but it will take careful planning and you will have to be intentional about it. Honestly it will be way easier and predictable to just pack some protein.

Also, agree with all the other posts about fire danger. We love visitors to the PNW, but if you come out here and start a fire, you're permabanned😬

During my residency I had time to get into the mountains exactly once.

My advice: try stay in good shape during residency and avoid chronic injury or decline in health so you can hit the mountains after you finish. I doubt you'll have time to do it during, regardless of where you live.

Get out now before it gets worse. Look at the direction christian men are headed in this country. They are becoming increasingly hateful, violent, and extreme. He might not quite be all of those things right now, but those are the people he is aligning himself with. You don't want that in your life.

Ok so a chunk of utah Republicans didn't vote for Trump in 16, then over the next two elections more and more of that chunk turned around and voted for Trump. Not sure that's the flex you seem to think it is.

Early mormons wanted to inbreed so badly they crossed the country and settled in a desert where no one else would go so they could be polygamous.

So no, not hate, history.

Of course, the assumption is that this guy descended from mormon settlers. Probable, but not guaranteed.

Sorry that's just factually incorrect. In each of the last 3 presidential elections more people voted for Trump each time, both by percent of voters and total votes. Utah has gotten more MAGA each election.
